Cain - are you noticing improvement tonight? For the first time in 3 weeks I can watch HD channels without cut out... No idea what changed, except that a line that was on the ground in my neighbor's yard has now been buried. Second time they have buried a line for him...

I'm experiencing the same thing here tonight. It's been looking like total crap the last week or 2, but tonight it looks pretty good.

Maybe it's because the temperature is higher?

They do not want to pay for it. TWC is the only major cable company not to carry ESPN2HD, and they were also the last to add ESPNHD.

I'm getting really sick of this. There have been numerous games this season involving teams that I follow on ESPN2. It ticks me off every time knowing that they are available in HD but I can't see them. There is another one this weekend. I thought that TWC was getting better, but I guess that they still have some of that cable monopoly (we'll do what we want, what are you going to do about it) attitude. I am a subscriber that has digital cable, phone, and high speed internet. I pay over $150.00 a month, and I'm going to leave real soon if that channel isn't added. Also, I just read in a local newspaper that TWC is going to raise their rates this month.

Oh boy College BB is starting -- ESPNU is carrying a bunch of games. Oh wait I have TWC and they don't care about what their customers want so we don't get that channel. Gees they don't even carry Turner South in MB and they own it! What a great company!

Time Warner to raise cable TV rates again
Bills for basic service will go up 3 percent, or $1.50, in 2007
By NOELLE PHILLIPS
nophillips@thestate.com

Three guaranteed things happen in November — elections, Thanksgiving and a cable television price increase.

Time Warner Cable announced a rate increase Monday for cable television customers. The price of basic cable will go up $1.50 to $50.49 a month in 2007. That’s a 3 percent increase from last year. Basic cable costs have risen 12 percent since 2002.

Basic cable includes channels 2 through 77.

This year, customers who subscribe to additional Time Warner products will catch a little break. Those who get cable television plus one additional Time Warner service — Road Runner Internet or digital phone — will see their basic cable bill go up 1.6 percent to $49.77. Those who buy all three products will not face an increase.

Ben Breazeale, Time Warner director of community affairs, said customers who bundle services are taking advantage of a cost efficiency Time Warner is able to offer. The company spent millions installing fiber optic cables across the state, but once those lines are in place it doesn’t cost extra money to feed more services through those lines.

But cable television is different, said Bud Tibshrany, vice president of public affairs.

Time Warner must negotiate with networks for programming. Typically, contracts are renewed every three years with channels such as ESPN, Tibshrany said.

“You can just bet your bippy they’re going to raise their prices on us,” he said.

Time Warner serves 390,000 customers in South Carolina and 40 percent have two or more services, Breazeale said. The company is the dominant cable provider in South Carolina although it faces competition from satellite television and a few other cable companies in limited areas.

All along, customers have said they prefer to buy multiple services from one company and receive consolidated bills, he said.

While Time Warner officials announced the rate increase, they also trumpeted other services offered by the company such as the “start over” feature on digital cable and a growing broadband network.

“All of this takes a lot of money,” Tibshrany said.

Well, I'm willing to drop HBO and Showtime if the rates keep going up.

Someday, when Max-HD is just the way Cinemax is normally delivered, I'll think back on all the politics behind why I'll have to watch all the Star Wars movies in SD and NOT laugh...

I just purchased an HD LCD TV with an HD Tuner. I do not have the TV connected to any type of converter box. The cable is plugged directly into the CATV input on my TV. After I ran the channel setup which searched for analog and digital channels, my TV found about 22 digital channels in addition to all of the analog channels. Many of them "preview" type channels for HBO and such.

Anyway, I found three of the four major networks had HD channels available to me...without a converter box.

They were:

ABCHD - Channel 103-4
NBCHD - Channel 69-26
FOXHD - Channel 69-3

My question is...is there a CBS HD channel offered in this way?

I have another HD TV with an HD Converter box and can get all the HD Channels that way...but I do not plan to purchase yet another converter box for this TV. I just don't want to add to my "already too high" cable bill.

Does anyone know if there is a CBS channel in HD offered this way? If not, is it possible that I can ask for it can be added?

Thanks for your time.

CBS is listed as 19-1 on my plasma. Every digital qam tuner does something different. Fox on mine is listed as 820 and NBC is listed as 805 ,but ABC is listed as 25-1. In other words you should look to see if it is stuck in the middle of the analogs like my CBS and ABC stations are.

I went through all of the channels that my TV found one by one and cannot find a CBS HD channel. I have a Vizio VX37L.

Help? I have had this before but maybe someone has found a solution. My box decided to reboot on its own about 11:30 last night (Saturday). Today it decided to reboot about 10:30 PM and just for good measure it decided to reboot again about 11:30 PM.

I have had this problem off and on for about 2 years-- had techs out off and on -- swapped boxes off and on and still it goes off and on! I have done whatever TWC asked to correct this problem and nothing has worked. The box had not rebooted on its own for about 3 weeks until the last 24 hours.

It is very frustrating because the reboot takes about 5 or more minutes and usually that creates problems with what you are watching. All 3 reboots happened when we were watching HD channels.

Any help with this TWC 8300 HD DVR problem would be appreciated.

Yes, this is garbage! TWC says the reason they wont get NFL Network or ESPN2-HD is because they would have to raise the rates, now they raise the rates anyways?? And who gives a crap about start over or that other one instant clips or whatever its called? Give us channels and stop wasting all the new bandwidth that SDV delivers on movie trailers on demand and crap like that. I skip through the trailers on dvd's i rent what makes you think i want a whole channel of that stuff? Give us ESPN2-HD and NFL Network!!!!!

Are you using a box? I have an 8300 and ESPN/ESPN2 are *totally* unwatchable thru the box.

I ended up hooking up a splitter and running a cable straight into my tv. When a ballgame is on, I just switch to the other input and bypass the box. Its def a pain but its the only way I can even see where the ball's at... :)

Exactly - although I'm tempted to try it out anyway. I'd just have to come up with a new system for phone and internet as well. I'm more waiting on FiOS... hoping it will help either by being better or forcing TWC to get better.

As for Dook, I haven't noticed any problems - but then again, why would you want to watch them anyhow? ;)

As someone who just switched from DirectTV to TWC - YEs, DirectTV has ESPN2 HD. But no locals in HD. Sure, you can get an OTA signal. But in my neighborhood, I couldn't (Stupid trees - I could on some channels but not on others, and it just wasn't worth it).

ESPNHD and ESPN2HD are offered by both satellite providers. Yes I've had a site survey done and due to Homeowner Association restrictions, I just can't put a Dish anywhere on my property.

So again, not everyone has access to Satellite service.

This is not quite true -- you must have an exclusive use are to put up a dish. I live in a condo and own nothing outside. I have no porch etc. Everything outside is a common area (belongs to all) therefore I cannot put up a dish. If I had a porch for example I could have a dish. I have been an HOA president and wanted to put up a dish and was involved when one owner went ahead an put one up anyway. He lost and it cost him -- had to fix up the building etc.

That's exactly what mine does too. Thru the 8300, most SD sports look very bad (w/ espn and espn2 seeming to be the worst offenders) , but running the cable straight to the tv, they look great (for SD that is)...

Another benefit with a direct cable run to the tv: i can watch 3 games at once. PIP on the tv, then PIP on the 8300... hehehe

This is a little offtopic but I have always gotten good feedback on this forum as far as things to think of when having TWC issues.

I have Roadrunner internet and yesterday I completely lost the Cable signal coming in to the modem. I had the line to the modem coming off a splitter (other split goes to an HDTV that was working great) so I swapped splitter lines with no effect, then I hooked up the modem with a straight drop off the wall with no success.

The TWC tech tried to reset it a couple of times and said that he wasn't getting any signals to the modem so they will be out next Tuesday to look at it.

To me it would seem to be a modem issue. Can I just take that modem in to a TWC office and swap it out or should I wait until Tuesday?

The only thing that I can think of trying that I haven't already tried is to take the modem to another room and try it.

Any suggestions?

i've lost signal to the modem while the HDTV was getting it many times in the past, and in all cases it turned out to be a problem in the main line. the RR signal seems to be more sensitive than the TV band.

once a CSR told me to try changing the modem so i took it to an office and swapped it. it was no different, but you can try it. has it been off completely since you lost it?

I've had to replace 2 TWC modems. Why not stop by and exchange yours. The St. Andrews office is virtually no-mans-land, the best kept secret in Columbia. No waiting in line. Also, if you do swap out the modem, I think you may have to call customer service to have them "ping" the new modem - though I'm not absolutely sure about this.

letterboxed SD(4.3) with stereo audio. I personally do not think it is worth doing, but that's just me. Using a dvd dvr with its internal ntsc tuner does a much better job than what the 8300hd puts out of its s-video output.

WOLO does not do this of course since they are on VHF. Can't wait until 2009 when WIS and WBTW in Florence go back to VHF.

In Fort Mill I get the following on my H20 receiver with a Channel Master antenna with rotor and pre-amp.

WOLO - All the time with 70-80% signal
WIS- From Approx 6 PM to 9 AM 68-70 % During the day 5%

No one adjusts their power levels. It's against FCC rules. Wht you're describing is due more to UHF signal propagation. :)

stevohdftmill

It is definately the UHF signal propagation. WOLO being on VHF mantains its signal at 70-80% during the day as well. I guess in 2009 the issue with WIS will be no more.

I should see WBTW in 2009 as well since I can pick up their analog signal.

I am a lot closer to Charlotte (as the crow flies but not traffic wise) but the Charlotte TV transmitters in Gaston Co. and NE Charlotte are only 20-30 miles closer than the Columbia transmitters in Kershaw Co. and NE Richland Co. The Charlotte news also has zip about the news in SC. That is why I watch the Columbia stations more than the Charlotte stations to keep up with what is happening in SC. :)

This is a HDTV question, and relates indirectly to the deliverability of 1080i over cable.

Sony apparently provided Playstation 3s that don't work as well as some people expected with HDTVs that don't support 720P per http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2006/11/24/6078 and since my F38310 can't handle 720P I'm glad I didn't struggle to get one.

I get the feeling that 720P is now considered 'better' than 1080i because it fits through cable with fewer quality complaints. Is that a valid feeling, or is there another reason why fewer lines has become more supported?...

All things being equal, which in the real world they seldom are, 720p takes approximately 25% less bandwidth than 1080i.

I've been noticing lately several shows that I've recorded disappear after a few days. The "auto-erase" function is turned off, and the hard drive is not at capacity (58%). What is really weird is that it seems to be more recent shows. For example, last week's episode of Jericho disappeared, but the one from the week before is still there. Also, Heroes from this past Monday night was in the Recorded Shows listing while tonight's Jericho was recording. After I finished watching Jericho, I wanted to watch Heroes and it was gone!

There are several shows that I know recorded during the last week that are gone while others are still there. This is really getting frustrating.

My cable box deleted my copy of "Prison Break" when I ended watching one recording on the drive and it started recording the news. Poof, Show Go Bye Bye!

John,

I'm having the same exact problem with Jericho. I have to go in after each episode I record and change it to "Save Until I Delete". If I don't, it disappears after a few days.

Here's my theory on what's going on. In preferences, there's an option for the "default" save time. I set my recording for Jericho for "All Episodes" well before I discovered this setting. I think the "Season Pass" is basing the save time on what it was set to before I changed the default. I notice if you have the pass set up to save "All Episodes" it's not the same as "Save Until I delete".

Hope this helps.

About a month ago I was having a bunch of strange issue popping up similar to yours. Also occurring, the box would report 100% full when it was not. In the end , after cold reboots didn't take care it, I reformatted the disk and have been pretty troublefree since.

From SA 8300 HD Tips & Tricks -- SARA (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=4682052&&#post4682052)

Last Resort. If for some reason you can't get the STB to do what you want and you've rebooted it by unplugging it, etc., this is a "last resort" item - say just before taking the unit back, you can try reformatting the HDD.

The SA8000HD (and presummably the SA8300HD) has a fairly simple procedure to erase the drive (start clean). Note that this process will erase all scheduled programming and will cause the unit to reload all programming data from your cable provider. On the plus side, it will repair any fragmenting problems.

* Press and hold PAUSE until Mail led is lit. Press PAGE down or (-),
and then press LIST three times. Turn box off. When turned back on,
formatting will begin.

On NFLGETREAL.COM there is this "fact":

"The NFL Network is not one of the top 25 cable networks, according to independent cable ratings systems."

That's some "fact" given the network is only about 3 years old and some of the largest cable companies don't carry it. But, even as such, it may be gaining ground.

Here is a quote from Seth Palansky, communications director for the NFL Network:

"NFL Network’s telecast on Thanksgiving (Broncos-Chiefs) was the most viewed program on cable that day and had the highest ratings of any cable show, despite our distribution. It really is amazing. We even had the second and fifth-highest rated shows of the day with our post and pregame shows."

You mean it beat out the "car-advertisements-on-demand" channel? :D

Thanks TimeWarner for getting us the NFL Network.

Sorry about changing lanes here, but does anyone else have pixelation so bad you cannot even watch TV?? I have had 2 techs out over the last month and still have this happening! Tonight is the worst yet as I cannot watch standard, digital, or HD channels! Some channels won't even connect...I tried rebooting to no avail. Does anyone have a fix they have found out about? So far, the first rep removed a splitter since I do not have RoadRunner anymore, and the second guy replaced the connector at the drop which is about 100 feet away from my house as well as replaced the bedroom connectors which are just coupled/connected together since no TV is there. They both tested the signal and say it shows acceptable. Cold weather seems to really make the pixelation worse. I am to a point that I may have to go with Dish if TW cannot figure this out...Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can the 8300HD be asked to display the signal strength? While "Today" wasn't unwatchable this morning, it did pixilate a lot in spots...

Even more amazing is that they pulled in these ratings with Bryant Gumbel in the booth! The NFL Network has been first class in all of it's programming so far, but having to listen to that guy is just painful...

Hopefully TWC will break down and pick up the NFL Network in HD soon... my DTV receiver is not HD, and it's hard to justify a whole new set-up for just that... unless I buy NFL Sunday Ticket in HD too :D

I've had series episodes in the middle of a sequence vanish. In other words, I have the one from three weeks ago, and the one from this week, but all of the sudden the one from last week will vanish. I found that with this box you need to watch your recorded shows within a day or two of them airing or all bets are off.

Silly question I know...but is CBS going to show that Victoria's Secret show in HD when they air it at the god awful hour of 2AM? The TWC guide says the station goes 'off the air' around midnight or so and doesn't have the option of recording the program in HD....only on the standard channel...

It wasn't on anyways.

In the end, I really didn't care about it...but, I don't like not getting to see something in HD that many, many, many people around the nation did...just becaues our CBS affiliate didn't want to air it at it's reguraly scheduled timeslot of 10PM (Kids should be in bed regardless IMO at that time...).

Just frustrating PC stuff that we all have to deal with. No biggie...

kevinivey

MHD I assume is MTVHD since I can't find anything listed as MHD. TVone is NOT a HD channel, and A&EHD will most likely take the place of INHD2 which is being discontinued. For the year of 2006, they would have added three HD channels ,and dropped one HD channel.

I wonder what the powers that be there in Columbia are going to do?

NEW YORK -- The NFL has offered one free week of its network programming to two cable TV operators who do not carry the channel in hopes of breaking a deadlock.

Commissioner Roger Goodell told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the week of Dec. 24-30 would be offered as a "free view" for customers of Cablevision and Time Warner Cable, two of the nation's largest cable carriers.

Neither Cablevision nor Time Warner carry NFL Network. Three regular-season Thursday night games already have not been available to those customers -- except in the markets of the participating teams, where the games aired on broadcast stations.

It is not unusual for cable channels such as HBO and Showtime to offer such free weeks to increase their subscribers.

Although the free view will not include the Saturday night game between the New York Giants and Washington Redskins, it will include the Texas Bowl featuring Rutgers vs. Kansas State on Dec. 28 and the Insight Bowl with Minnesota vs. Texas Tech on Dec. 29.

"This morning we are communicating to Time Warner and Cablevision that we are going to give them an opportunity for what we call a free view," Goodell said. "Cable operators do it all the time. It's so that the consumer can experience our network for a week and get the two college bowl games."

The Texas Bowl not being available to many viewers in New York has become a contentious issue because Rutgers is coming off its best Big East season and has become a popular team in the area. The NFL Network owns the rights to the Rutgers-Kansas State bowl game at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

"We are trying to accommodate consumers, our fans and the fans of Rutgers, to let them know we are trying to resolve this issue," said Goodell, who said he also has spoken with Gov. Jon Corzine and Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

"We think this is a very good opportunity for people to see not only those two games, but the NFL Network. We certainly believe cable operators will see it the same way."

Spokesmen at Cablevision and Time Warner Cable did not immediately return calls for comment.

"From the NFL's perspective, they want to generate consumer support," said John Mansell, senior analyst at Kagan Research, a media analysis company. "It's not unusual for any new network to offer their service free, but typically for an extended period of time. Even then, most cable operators are reluctant to bite because of the problems they might face in taking it off the air. ... It's very difficult for the cable company to take anything away from the subscriber."

The NFL Network is available in about 40 million of the 111 million homes with TVs. In comparison, ESPN, which airs Monday night games, is available in 92 million.

Here in SC TW will treat its customers in the following manner: When INHD2 goes off the the air there will be no replacement, however, the cost for that tier will remain at $6.95 a month. It is so nice that they care about us. I asked if any channels might take INHD2 place and was told "no" by a CSR who spent about ten minutes away from the phone getting this information. So we really pay $6.95 a month for ESPNHD since that is the only channel of any real value in that tier. But now 17% of the channels are leaving this tier and no rate change -- that on top of the $4 a month they are raising the rates in SC for no new services, just a general rate increase. And a $1 of that rate increase is for box rental!

I think you spend too much time talking to Customer Service expecting they will have any accurate information on channel additions. Weren't these the same folks who told you Direct TV had the NFL Network tied up for several more years a few weeks back? Could be they are not the best source for the answers you are looking for, but maybe someone will jump in soon to tell us what "Dressler said" so we have even more useless information to read. Good Morning Mr. Ivey,

Thank you for choosing Time Warner Cable for your entertainment and communication needs.

We appreciate the opportunity to address your questions and concerns.

I wish we were able to add the channel you requested immediately, but unfortunately we do not have a contract to carry ESPN 2 HD. As a cable operator, we must execute a contract to legally carry programming. Currently, the TWC Corporate Programming group is in negotiations to carry ESPN 2 HD on all TWC Systems throughout the country. Upon conclusion of the contract, we will happily place this channel on your lineup just as quickly as possible.

I am very happy to announce that we have launched HD MOD on Channel 998, A&E HD on channel 842 and MHD (MTV in High Definition) on channel 841. We are also currently working to add several additional HD channels and believe we will be able to do so in the very near future.

If you would like to be informed regarding future service and programming updates, you can sign up for Time Warner Cable of South Carolina's new Email Newsletter. You'll get information about great new programs and channels, information about new products and services, as well as special offers available only through our Newsletter. All you have to do is use SEARCH back through this thread. --

A side deal was cut that allowed acquired Adelphia properties to keep ESPN2HD - rather than losing it like they did NFL Network and ESPNU. It did not allow for the roll out of the product to any additional TWC properties.

Thursday night they had a tribute to Reba with just about every top female country artist and the production was great. This channel looks like a keeper. Still want ESPN2HD though.

A couple of times I've flipped over to MHD and there was no signal at all. Seems intermittent.

EDIT: Just after posting the above I went to check and there is no picture at all on MHD (841).

Thank you for choosing Time Warner Cable for your entertainment and communication needs.

We appreciate the opportunity to address your questions and concerns.

Unfortunately, InDemand, made the decision to cease the carriage of the INHD2 network and this channel is no longer available anywhere. At this time, our price for the HD Tier will remain unchanged. We do have plans to add additional HD programming in the near future.

Question about TWC's SA8300HD DVR. Anyone have their 8300HD connected to a Denon AV Receiver using HDMI out of the cable box? Right now I'm using component video and digital audio out. The reason I ask is that, if I remember correctly, HDMI out wasn't enabled when I did my set up months ago. So, if HDMI out is available and compatible with my receiver, I'd like to go that route. Also, does anyone have an opinion as to whether HDMI will make a significant difference compared to the component/digital that I'm now using? Thanks.

Silly question I know...but is CBS going to show that Victoria's Secret show in HD when they air it at the god awful hour of 2AM? The TWC guide says the station goes 'off the air' around midnight or so and doesn't have the option of recording the program in HD....only on the standard channel...

This is an old post that I could not pass up. Don't assume that the stations in Columbia are "OFF the AIR" just because the cable company's program guide say that. I know WLTX stays on the air all night long. Don't blame them if the cable company has a wrong listing. I would bet if you would actually tune into the station or record it, you would see the rest of the stations are on the air as well.

Greenville -Spartanburg is a very large market. The Columbia market is in the 80's .

Greenville-Spartanburg is not a larger market than Columbia.

Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville however is larger. Minor point I guess, but it's
great for upstate folks to have a major city close enough to be included when it
comes to stuff like rollout schedules.

And the whole 'change your address with D* even though you did not move' isn't
really a good way to get network channels over satellite IMO. I'm sure it's
against your TOS and is probably considered signal theft.

Besides, in Columbia it's not that hard to pick up OTA and they'll look better
anyway than over the satellite.

Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville-Anderson. (Hey, if we're going to nitpick, let's pick 'em all! :D )

Getting back to Columbia, I see that WIS has dropped its SD simulcast on 10.3, leaving only Weather Plus on 10.2 to suck bits from the main subchannel. And is it just my imagination, or has the digital PQ on their news shows improved a bit lately? It seems sharper than it used to be. And David and Dawndy's faces don't have that green tinge any more, although they could still use a bit more color. Maybe they just need to get out in the sun more.

Good luck :(That's what I've been hearing - thus my question. Have you talked with tech support at TWC about this? See, I'd hate to get the HDMI cable, go through the hassle of configuring the system, only to confirm what you and others say. In other words, has someone (you) talked to TWC for an answer as to why this relatively simple state-of-the art connection can't be made on TWC Columbia? Thanks.

They are aware that there are hdmi issues, but they officically they only support analog component out. The thing was rock solid until they issued the firmware that included "the start program from the beginning". The box is even capable of outputting a white static screen when turned off. Though with all the issues I have never gotten a hdmi error from my monitors. The most problems occur when turning on the box ,and changing resolutions.
(The tech that came to my house confirmed the hdmi issues when I asked.)

BTW :the only audio via the hdmi has been DD 2.0(pcm). This is confrimed by my Sony hdmi receiver. My neighbor has a D* setup and has no hdmi issues, but his picture is not what I am looking for to say the least.

I think it is important to have balanced news coverage from viewpoints around the world, and currently, people like myself have to surf the net to find it. It is apparent that the service providers are staying away from it, and I would like to know why. I know it would be watched by many. It is not my intent to start a discussion about that stations content here, as that is forbidden by forum rules, but I did want to ask in as public a forum as possible so others know that it HAS been asked for. will say that I am getting less and less of what I want to see via network television as time passes. On fast moving sequences like football and and scene changes, I get vertical lines while that movement is going on. If a still shot or one with little movement on the screen, it looks normal. I dont' think its my TV or DVR box because I fed the cable directly into my TV and get the same thing and I also can pause my DVR and the anomaly is being recorded. This tells me that there is possible something wrong with the signal? Anyone ever experience this? Its almost like the signal can't keep up on fast action stuff and certain parts of the picture are lagging behind. ANy help? Is this a TWC problem?

If you are watching sports on CBS, and NBC there are times when there is horizontal banding . May have something to do with those two being 1080i. IIRC 720p (ABC, FOX, ESPN) is better for the fast action in sports although I think the artifact manifests itself more as blocking.

I need some advice. Over the last several weeks I have had instances where my HD picture (and sound) broke up significantly, to the point where the channel becomes unwatchable. I noticed that this happens primarily on CBS, and sometimes on NBC. This never seems to happen while watching the HD Discovery Channel or ESPN HD. The interesting thing is that this does not happen all the time while watching HD on these network channels; sometimes it starts in the middle of the program.

I have hadd a TIME Warner tech over and he said that the "ground" cable (the one coming into the house was not properly grounded--so he fixed it. This did not solve the problem. Please not that TW also installed a signal booster on the outside cable coming into the house. According to the TW tech, the signal coming to the HD TV is in the "acceptable range." Could there be a problem in that the signal (frequency) for some stations i.e CBS, NBC is less that acceptable? Any other possibilities? Any suggestions for rectifying this situation?.....I appreciate any and all suggestions on this since I don't seem to be getting anywhere with TW on this.

Latham, the website you need to visit is antennaweb.org. Put in your address, and it will tell you how far away from the broadcast antennas you are for each station. Then it will suggest an antenna for your distance.

I'm in lexington,sc as well. I didn't have much luck with OTA unless I put a huge antenna on the roof (didn't). My father has it and loves it. Of course he only lives 15 miles or less from the towers..as opposed to most people in lexington who live 30+. Try it and see. If it doesn't work you can always take it back to radioshack and get a full cash refund (within 30 days of course).

Now, now. I've tried maybe 4 antennas and the 'Terk' or whatever mine was labeled is the only one still attached. Its main problem is that it needs a remote-controlled turntable to get it pointed right for each channel or each change in how the weather is bending the signals...

Hi Latham, I live in Florence SC and I tried a Terk antenna too, and I got nothing, I just hooked old fashioned rabbit ears and I can get Channel 13 cbs and 15 abc, I am 28 miles from their antenna's. It pulls in between 85 and 95 strength. Also I can get 57 fox out of columbia with my CM 4228 outdoor antenna at about the same strength as I get 13 and 15 here with rabbit ears. You may be able to pull it in with rabbit ears. You will need a 75 ohm to 300 ohm transformer about 2.00 and try that. I also think you could probably get a CM 4221A antenna and try in your attic, it has a uhf range of about 45 miles cost about 25.00. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I've heard all the junk about the Terk antennas, but I've got this Terk Antenna (http://www.amazon.com/Terk-Amplified-High-Definition-Antenna-Reception/dp/B0007MXZB2/sr=8-1/qid=1169860189/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-3610365-0657550?ie=UTF8&s=electronics) and it works fine for me. Here in Irmo, I can get all the locals save for the UPN/WB channel or whatever it's called these days, but that's no big loss for me.

Also, I've got the Columbia and and a couple of the Greenville towers mapped in Google Earth. It helps to get your bearings to the towers and figure out how far you are, etc.

You can get the Google Earth KMZ from here. (http://www.atkinsfamily.org/avatar/ColumbiaTowers.kmz)

I live in a relatively low lying area in my neighborhood and I have the CM4221 in my attic and it works wonders. I am 23 miles away from the antenna farm in Columbia. Good luck!

I saw a commercial tonight on WLTX claiming the Super Bowl could be seen in "crystal clear high definition on Time Warner cable channel 810" (if that's not verbatim, it's pretty close).

If we see the Super Bowl in crystal clear high definition it'll be a great improvement over WLTX's "high definition" college and pro football games from earlier in this season.

Does anyone know of WLTX's plans for their subchannels, etc. during the game?

Cain

Dear WLTX, please, please, please turn off all the subchannels and devote your complete bandwidth to the Superbowl... Please..

I can assure you more folks will be watching the game than the sub weather channels...

Please...... (Anyone else wanna beg with me?).........

Who do we call or e-mail to make this happen ??? Anyone from LTX here ???

I doubt that will happen especially with Dan gone.. besides, it's not that simple,
to just "turn off" the subchannels. It requires encoder changes that if improperly done will kill the whole transport. I maybe wrong, but if they are there now I expect they'll be there during the game. I know I wouldn't be making encoder changes this late in the big day..

That's sooo awesome! I was about to call my wifes uncle, since he's pretty high up at WLTX to do it. But I don't have too!

The doppler radar channel is turned off and the weather now station is definitely NOT getting it's usual bandwidth :) Since it only takes up a 4:3 space when it normally is WS :).

THANKS WLTX!!!

I just watched Boston Legal -HD on my DVR. The first few moments were SD, and then the HD kicked in. What causes things like this? Does someone literally have to flip a switch or something?

Op wasn't paying attention, the HD should have been enabled ahead of time so that network switch would have been seamless. They have been beaten with a VHS tape and had their bathroom breaks suspended..

Of course, if ABC (or all networks) would provide a full-time HD feed like FOX does
this problem wouldn't occur.

Question about other area cable providers...

Mostly PBTComm - I noticed that they have ESPN2HD...anyone have or heard anything about this company? I can't seem to see any prices on their website (www.pbtcomm.net). There internet speeds aren't really 'good' compared to TWC...but...anyways..I'm always up for competition...was wondering if anyone had seen them and what they thought.

Currently I have Dish Network with dual-tuner DVR that shares content between rooms and I love it. Except that they don't offer Columbia locals in HD. Major bummer and a deal breaker since Santa brought me a 1080p display. I need an HD DVR but the price seems rather high.

It seems my options are OTA or TWC-SC.

OTA means getting a HTPC or TIVO for DVR functionality. ~$1000

TWC-SC just told me it would be $85/month + tax for HD DVR in one room, no sharing.

Currently we pay $43 and change for SD service via the Dish. Granted we only have basic programming, but that's all we need.

We want to see Heroes, Prison Break, 24, House, Lost, etc. in HD but it seems like the price drastically increases for this with any DVR functionality. Are there any ways to curb the cost at all?

Thanks,
Bryce

Which receiver do you have? We've got the Dish VIP-622 that is an HD-DVR. I receive all the OTA stations no problem and the 622 records them just fine.

Perhaps you could upgrade your DVR to a 622? It'll do the dual room setup (we're doing it here as well) just fine.

The last time I talked to Dish there was a $200 fee for that box, plus they would only give it out to HD customers because they had a short supply. Has that changed you think?

The other thing is there is only one Satellite tuner, so only 1 HD program at a time. My two favorite shows are on tonight, 24 and Heroes, so that's not that great either. I've become spoiled by not watching commercials.

I suppose there could be worse things in life...

I believe you can get a 622 for free after rebate now. http://www.pvrwire.com/2007/01/08/free-hd-dvr-vip622-from-dish-network-no-rebates/

I'm not sure about the simultaneous HD recording. A quick google was inconclusive. I don't know if I've ever run into that situation or not, but I think it might be able to do simultaneous HD recording. I know for a fact that both tuners will do HD.

Call TWC and tell them you want to get an HD DVR and "BUY THROUGH" to get the HD locals. You get the analog cable, but get the locals, discovery, and TNT in HD. With tax, it's $32 a month. No ESPN, you can't buy the additional HD tier w/o digital cable. Keep your satellite. You should come out a tad better that way.

TWC's digital picture is much better than the current overcompressed directtv. Don't know how it compares to dish.

There are two tuners in the vip622, which can be used to tune to two SAT programs (incl HD LIL) or one HD-OTA and one SAT.
You can record two (SAT/SAT or SAT/OTA) while watching a recording, but you can only VIEW HD-OTA via tuner #1.

There is a UHF ANALOG (low-rez) channel output (e.g. CH60, which you can change) that can be
wired to either SAT coax input system (backfeed) or onto your house's CABLE coax for distribution.
Any TV on this coax can watch whatever Tuner2 is set to, or you can watch recorded programs.
You also get a second UHF Remote Control to change channels while watching in the bedroom...

bbigger -

I'm currently in your setup (except I don't have DirecTV HD yet because of no local HD channels..)

Call up TWC and tell them you would like the BROADCAST TIER and a HD receiver.

Currently...I pay the following for HD Cable from TWC...

Broadcast Tier - 12.39
HD DVR PKG - 16.20 - (Does allow you to record two shows at once, whether it's HD or SD)

Total cost - 28.59 + taxes brings it about to 32ish dollars. Definitely NOT 85+ :)

Of course I also get internet service from TWC as well..so the total cost for me is around 76 dollars

The HD receiver is what allows you to recieve the HD channels, NOT the type of package you get from them. They may try to 'fight' you about it (they did with me since they didn't believe me...) but just be persistant in what you want...and you'll be able to get your local HD channels and a DVR function.

The channels that are unlocked to you with a HD unit are...

ABCHD
CBSHD
FOXHD
NBCHD
PBSHD
DiscoveryHD
TNTHD
A&EHD - not really HD...but...
MHD - collaboration between MTV, VH1, and CMT
Special events in HD - which is usually Braves games in HD...which look great, too bad I don't like the Braves...

Hope that helps!

Um, it's called "Buy Through", as I mentioned in my earlier post. Although ncxc described it better than I did. :)

Call them and tell them you want an HD-DVR, and you want to "Buy Through" and get the HD Broadcast tier, but you don't want digital cable. The rep more than likely will know what you are talking about.

Anyone else lose channels 800 through 845 from clear QAM reception? My brother and I both had them drop out a couple of days ago. TW customer service says they don't support it and have not made any channel lineup changes. I have only tried with my Westinghouse TV's as I have not had a chance to check the others.

Here in Georgetown on TWC we seem to have lost the Channel IDs (some kind of metadata or part of the PSIP data?) but not the actual clear QAM programs.

We use the SA8300HD for most viewing but last night both of its tuners were busy recording different shows so we switched to the direct cable QAM side on the set and something interesting happened. As soon as we tuned in WIS-DT, the on-screen ID (Pioneer) changed before our eyes from "805", the same as seen on the 8300, to "103.026", the actual QAM channel ID. Reviewing our HD favorites, they ALL had lost the 800 series nomenclature, but all the channels were still there, just with the raw QAM channel.

I suspect TWC has dropped or is changing how they feed the channel ID data; it's probably intended for the cable card users more than the direct clear QAM user. A rescan should restore the missing channels.

Mike
