I expect to start seeing people get them Fri/Sat. Hopefully the Insignia boxes don't have too many incidences of freezing as I just saw reported on another thread, since that is the box I was wanting.

I send my request in on January 2, but nothing yet. The "status" of my request is less than helpful, yes they approved it, but it's waiting to be sent out.

I'll bet that when I go into the store, the salesperson will have NO idea what to do with the coupon.

Now that I am retired, I need a coupon for everything!!!

If the TR-40 converts and passes along the digital TVGOS data to my Sony DVR, I'll gladly pay the full $40.00 for it.

(As long as I can still record from the Sony's tuner in HD when using the TR-40 and TVGOS, and not just from the TR-40 in SD, that is.)

When I purchased the Zenith Converter Box from Circuit City (no coupon), the salesman said they had received training regarding these boxes and the coupons. I played dumb and asked questions to see if he really knew; he seemed to have all the right answers. The only thing he said wrong was that he said that the Zenith was the ONLY box that the coupons could be used for. :eek:

I have to get 4 boxes for all the TVs and VCRs in our house, so I figured why wait for a coupon before I get a converter.

From his point of view, that may be a true statement. In the universe of things you could buy from him (i.e. stuff in the store), that box is only one the coupon will work with.

Anyone found anything official on whether they really have started shipping coupons yet? I know we heard the 19th...and also "late Feb." If they had started shipping last Tues, I would have expected to have received mine by now...or at least heard of others that got them.

Maybe next week...and I was looking forward to playing around with the Zenith this weekend...oh well.

I submitted my online application on 1/1/08, numbered in the 134K range. A relative also submitted an online application on 1/1/08, numbered in the 249K range. We are both located in Portland Oregon, the mailing address for the TV Converter Box Coupon Program. That may not mean that the coupons are to be mailed from Portland. No coupons have been received as of the 2/23/08 mail delivery.

A group I am involved with a raffling off a 32" SD analog TV on March 14th and I was hopeing to toss a coupon in the deal.

Yikes.....what number do you have? Mine is 362XXX and I'm seeing people on here with far lower numbers (5 digits) who haven't gotten theirs yet. I have a feeling I'm not seeing these things until mid-late March.

Yeah, that's the standard "default" response you get when checking your status online. I wonder whether it has any relation to reality, or if they just put that canned response up for everyone, regardless.

Supposedly, they will be "staggering" mailings starting with the first requests, but what matters is how often they are mailing them and how many in a batch. I mean, do these things go out every day, or once a week? Do they mail 10,000 at a time, or 50,000, or 100,000? We just don't know. It's like waiting for an IRS refund.

I would think with the millions of requests, they would be shipping them out in at least batches of 50,000 or so....or it might take a few months to mail out the early requests. But then again, the transition isn't for another year, so I guess there really isnt much of a rush.....just me wanting to play with a new toy :D

Technically you can't transfer the coupon to anyone else according to the govt web site, although I doubt there will be much enforcement. I would advise not advertising publically in a forum that keeps records (i.e newspaper) that there's a free coupon included though, unless you want to be a test case for how far the govt will go to make your life miserable over a little $40 coupon. The fact you're doing a raffle, even if it might be charitable, leads also to the fact that the site states it's illegal to sell the coupon, so you'd want to be careful about not appearing to raffle the coupon.

But, there is nothing from preventing you from using your coupon, and then give away the ATSC receiver along with the TV....

Yes, but then the raffle recipient doesn't get to choose his receiver. What if he wants analog pass-through & s-video? :D I don't see much abuse potential here. Arbitraging on $40 ATSC receivers ($0 + tax after coupon) that you buy up from folks one or two at a time for $5-10 & trying to resell them on eBay for $20 is not a winning model given the shipping costs on the units and the hassle of guaranteeing the merchandise. Having an outfit buy coupons for cash & reselling several hundred cards per month on eBay at a $10 profit on each would have irritated me as an abuse of my taxpayer money, but that's explicitly forbidden, so I'm fine with things the way they are.

There is no enforcement because they aren't going to be recording your name and address when you redeem the coupons anyway. You could theoretically accumulate 10 or 20 or 50 of them from people who don't want or need them and use them if you want. (As long as you don't keep going back to the same store...) ;) I can't think of a rationale for doing so, save for the fact that current ATSC technology is as of yet unencumbered by "broadcast flag" DRM which may eventually be required in all units tuning DTV broadcasts. It's a stretch, but if someone is happy with basic Standard Definition converted-to-analog signals and wants a relatively cheap way to record stuff that is "blocked" by a broadcast flag chip, then these units might have some added value in the future. But as I say, it is a bit of a stretch. I'd think it a rather risky investment..... :)

Or they are simply haphazard and incomplete about updating the status messages. But you may be right about the randomness of the numbers -- glancing through messages on this forum and others, it looks like some folks who requested their coupons after me got lower numbers in some cases.

Actually, that makes the most sense of anything we're postulating here. It's probably like IRS checks, which are sent out from regional offices. Depending on where you live, you may wait longer for your refund if your particular regional center is running behind (or just more inept than the others). The converter coupons were probably assigned by zip code, and each mailing point is responsible for encoding the cards, prepping the mailings, etc.

Really, the bottom line is that we will all get the coupons when we get them, and there's nothing we can do to speed up the process. Maybe we should stop obsessing over this and just not even think about it, then be pleasantly surprised when the little red cards turn up in the mailbox. ;)

The DTV website lists 43 approved converter boxes yet we are hearing of perhaps five or six that may be found in the stores. This is not coordination.

Like anything from the government, don't expect it to be rational or logical. :D

There's a good and a bad side to the delay...


The Good: The longer we wait, the greater the chances that other boxes will appear in the stores. Someone posted that Target and Sears won't get their boxes until May. I don't know if that's true or not, but with a 90 day window, we are looking at the end of the window to wait until May. I also am not sure if the stores that have converters today, like Circuit City, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Walmart, will have additional models appear later in the year.

The Bad: None of us like to wait, we want it NOW!!!!

There certainly seems to be availability - at least in Milwaukee. I went into the local WalMart and they had a BUNCH of converters. Same thing with the Radio Shack next block over. The Radio Shack people seemed very familiar with the boxes and the $40 coupon program. They said NOBODY had brought in a coupon yet (as of 2/25/2008) to their store.

The longer we wait, the greater the chances that other boxes will appear in the stores. Someone posted that Target and Sears won't get their boxes until May. I don't know if that's true or not, but with a 90 day window, we are looking at the end of the window to wait until May.

It's too bad they (the gov't) didn't make it so that you had to "activate" the coupons once you got them, and then have the 90 day clock begin at that point. That way you would have the chance to hold out for a particular CECB. Oh well.

Mine has just been updated to that message as well, just within the last few hours. Considering how far apart our numbers are, either (a)they just put a sh*tload of coupons in the mail, or (b)the numbers are totally meaningless to begin with. Given that the government is in charge, I pick (b).....

I checked some random numbers up through the 477,xxx range finding these have been "mailed." Numbers higher than 477,xxx are in preparation. This is around 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time, 2/26/08. My number is in the 134,xxx range but the coupons did not arrive with today's mail.

I hadn't thought of trying random numbers. Whoever has 70,000 is going to be dissapointed. Their message was "Your coupons have been cancelled."

Take heart -- I think that is just a CYA, although a little extreme. One of the oldest tricks in the book is to deliberately overestimate delivery time to your "customer," then you smell like a rose when they get it much faster. Better than saying "2 or 3 days," and then it takes a week or 10 days or more cos some postal facility along the way is running behind.

If you look at joebedo above, the expiration date of 5/23 means that they must have been sent out around 2/23 (90 days previous), and he got them 2/26, so only 3 days (with one day a Sunday, so really two days).

They are all sent "Presorted First Class," so they are delivered to the locak Post Office in large boxes or even pallets.

The local carrier just gets the presorted bundle to deliver. So, if they maild them, you will get them soon.

They might have shipped the bundles last week but had not updated the date in the web site, until recently, either.

I'm not in any hurry for it - Got to see what's available local / on the web first. I may end up with not my first choice simply because it is not available yet. In that case, I'll get what I can.

Yesterday I saw the tuner at WalMart. On the box is info about the $40 government rebate.

At about 12:30 p.m. 2/27 Pacific Time the mailed coupons went up to include 477,657 and the approved/prepared coupons started at 477,658 and went up from there.

Any late comers want to trade for a coupon when mine comes in?? I guess I should have waited. With a 90 day expiration date it will be iffy for the TR-40 if I receive mine too soon.

I don't think any of the boxes I've seen stand out a lot over the others -- there is only so much you can do and maintain a $40-60 price point. If you wait, you will also have the advantage of a lot more "field experience" apart from the few early adopters who have played with some of the units.

Personally, I'm jonesin' to play with any of them -- I have no experience with DTV, and haven't even really played with OTA TV at all (save for during blackouts) in years. The Magnavox box at Wal-Mart is cheap, readily available, and a couple of people I know (and whose opinions I trust) have tried it out early and given it a decent thumbs up for the price. So, I plan to use one coupon right away on that unit, play with it for awhile, then decide whether to get the same one with the 2nd coupon, get something like the Zenith instead, or hold out for another unit that may prove out better in testing in the coming weeks.

I'm probably going to get a Zenith DTT900 shortly (after I get my coupons), but I'm going to wait on the second one until I can hopefully get an Echostar/ Sling Media TR40. If they are too late, I'll get a Digital Stream from Radio Shack and then pay full price for the TR40. If I can find Phillips instead, I'll take one of them instead of the Zenith.

To me the big thing is S-video out. I want to use them to feed my analog DVDR's and figure I should get much better PQ using S vs. Composite. I know I get a better PQ using S-out on my DVDR's to my TV, vs. composite. None of the boxes I've seen so far have S-out, and it sounds like the TR-40 does for sure, not to mention a programmable timer which again should mate quite nicely to my DVDR's.

The TR-40 at CES only had composite and RF out. No S-video.

Drla, according to a chart I just found it looks like you're correct, no S-video on the TR-40:o I could have sworn I read somewhere it did.
Rviele- I'm not sure what BB is doing. It looks like there coupon is enclosed in the box and has to be used at BB. I figured I couldn't downright return the box, but I would think? maybe they would exchange it for a different similar priced box.

I got my coupon card today.

I applied for one today and got a huge number: 3,850,xxx. The site said "your coupon application has been approved" so I guess it will show up eventually.

But I had read that only 3 million coupons max were in the program. Does anyone know the story on the total quantity? :confused:

try 22.5 million to anybody that wants one, and an additional 11.25 million for OTA only users.

Would not be surprise if both of those numbers get raised by Congress during this year.

Several of them were clearly people who don't understand the limitations imposed on the box (one complained that it "only" put out a 480i signal -- duh, that's what it's SUPPOSED to do -- another wanted a digital audio output, which is not available on the coupon boxes, etc.).

Most of the bad reception reviews appear to be people using indoor antennas that didn't pull enough signal in the first place. (Enough for snowy analog -- not enough for DTV). Like the old trouble announcement used to say: "the fault does not lie in your set [converter box]." :) Everyone's reception situation is different given their terrain, type and location of antenna, which channels and with what power and from how far the transmitters are, etc. Most people seem to get all or most of their analogs' digital counterparts, a few are in problematic locations where they get very few digital signals compared to analog, and a few even get MORE signals in digital now, sometimes because some of the DTV transmitters are in different (closer or more favorable) locations.

The one where the guy couldn't find the power switch was priceless. :rolleyes:

I have seen some reviews (early adopters) from TV-DXers (who tend to be pretty demanding of and picky about their equipment) of both the Magnavox and Insignia/Zenith boxes who generally give them excellent marks. Most of the complaints tend to be minor annoyances -- maybe the program guide is cumbersome to use, or changing the aspect ratio has to go through the menu and can't be done "on the fly," etc.

Got both of mine today (March 1, 2008). Each is a red card (like a debit card) with a fancy "Security" hologram and a Department of Commerce badge. And yes, only 90 days to redeem, and there is no way to replace them if you lose them.

The sad thing is that they appear to only apply to the actual converter boxes and NOT to any other useful logical outgrowth, such as a DVD player/recorder with a built-in tuner. :-( I got my hopes up that the government might have done something right.

I have applied for coupons but have no idea what the boxes costJust want to let you know that you don't need those coupons; your current DirecTV boxes will work fine for OTA content after analog shutoff. In addition, these coupon boxes' resolution isn't as sharp as D*'s boxes.

(As for the channel 47/38 issue on your current equipment, as long as you remember both analog and digital channel numbers and the issue doesn't otherwise affect viewing the channels, you should be fine beyond the minor annoyances the issue causes.)

You can't legally return, sell, or gift the coupons you applied for, but you can buy a couple of boxes and gift or sell them in any way you want. I suppose you know someone or two who is, currently, OTA analog only. I suggest the "Zenith DTT900" at Circuit City and some Radio Shack locations. So far, it seems to be a pretty good and easy to use unit.

Anyway, the coupon boxes cost anywhere from $40 to $60 MSRP, before tax. The coupons take $40 off the cost of whatever box(es). The Zenith I mentioned has a $60 MSRP. Its cost is worth it.

Rviele- I'm not sure what BB is doing. It looks like there coupon is enclosed in the box and has to be used at BB. I figured I couldn't downright return the box, but I would think? maybe they would exchange it for a different similar priced box.

I did check with my address yesterday and it looks like they got that part correct....though I still haven't received my coupon.....slow mail I guess..
I know they talked about setting up a reissue if someone lets their coupons go
past the 90 days....but have they mentioned if someone never receives them, what to do? I guess I might have to get my parents to request cards and take theirs, if mine doesnt come in the "2-3 weeks".

As of yesterday's mail, still nuthin'. (My reference # is 362XXX). :mad: I mean, the things are being sent presorted -- it's not like the p.o. on the receiving end has to expend much time to get them out, and it's not like they are coming bulk rate or something.

As for replacing lost cards, I believe I read that they will not do that. That really sucks, as they are all encoded and have unique numbers -- it would only be a matter of deactivating those numbers in the system (so if found or stolen they cannot be used) and issuing new ones. But they seem to be very adamant about "hang on to your coupons" warnings and state that they will not be replaced. Not a good way to do business, IMHO.

I received my cards and got the Insignia converter (2) available at Best Buy the next day. I have a 32" Sony WEGA flat screen analog, with Samsung home theater and Panasonic DVD-R/RW/VCR.

I had the box set up in minutes. Piece of cake. The menus are very friendly, the guide works well once you have done a flip through all the stations.

Used RCA splitters to run to the Line In on the DVD-R/RW and the TV. Plus, it works with my Logictech 550 universal remote. Press a button, all the devices turn on, set themselves and ready to roll. The DVD-R/RW is already connected to the Home Theater for sound, so, I programmed the remote to set up for 5.1 sound (not sure if it's real or simulated, but it sounds sweet).

The TV has 4 line inputs, so, I even have one left!

I am still using my Terk TV5 set top antenna (low profile) and I am picking up a very good/strong signal for every OTA HD channel listed locally (26). The Best Buy guy talked me into another antenna, but I haven't even opened it. Just going to return it.

The only thing I'll have to remember is to tune the converter to ABC HD when I record LOST (which is the only show I record regularly).

Very Happy! Best 20$ (after coupon) I ever spent. The other box will go on the 27" in the guest room.

Something interesting I noticed when using my VCR and an early 4th generation tuner...

It seemed like the image was sharper with the tuner, then with an analog feed. My theory is that the box produces a DVD (720h) like sharpness while analog is around 300h to 320h sharpness.

OK so the VCR is limited to about 240 to 250 lines, but you can see a difference when the source is better...

Oh yes, I'm still waiting for my coupons, signed up January 2....

Which indicates that they have contracted out the actual mail preparation and submission to the private sector. Consider that such contracts usually go to the lowest bidder, and that may account for the inconsistency of who gets what when. ;)

When I applied on 1/1/08 a few minutes after midnight the date-time-stamp showed 12/31/07, so I had written to the program administrator asking about my qualification and she said I should be fine. Well unfortunately my computer crashed and I don't have that email anymore (arrg.. Murphy's Law, once again). It's looking like I am 'not fine'. I even cleaned off all the junk mail in the kitchen hoping I missed it. :(

No tech difficulties if you applied immediately after watching the ball drop in Times Square, but the date-stamp showed 12/31/2007 because the servers accepting the submissions are evidently not hosted on the east coast. I actually wrote to the program admin and she replied a few days later saying not to worry and my entry "should be fine". But now I see everyone that applied after me is receiving their coupons, so I don't think everything is fine. Too bad my machine crashed and I lost that email and can't find her address again (looks like it was removed off the dtv2009.gov site). :(

I did have my parents sign up for two last night (though they really only need one). SO eventually I may at least get their extra unit if my coupons never show. Initial reaction: WOW!

No need to write a lengthy review as there are other excellent posts here about the Zenith box. I will say that I live on the 1st floor of an apt and analog reception has not been the best, especially using "rabbit ears". Hooked up the box, breezed through the setup menu/auto-channel detection, and every local channel was found except one but by placing the "ears" in a horizontal position, now that one is detected. I will purchase a better indoor UHF antenna today and give that a try. The miriad of options the DTT900 has are incredible but since all of the coupon-eligible boxes are required to have a minimum of specs I presume the other brands are just as nice. I nearly opted for the RCA box at Wally World but after reading posts here (thanks AVS forum!) and finding out that direct channel access was not available, that cinched my choice to the Zenith. The Insignia box at Worst Buy is claimed to be the same, but rather than chance that one I picked up the real thing at Circus City for the same price. There were only 3 boxes on the shelf; 2 having a mfg date of Nov 2007 and one with Jan 2008. Guess you know which one I chose. :D My other coupon expires on May 22 (as did the other one) so perhaps something better may be available by then although that really is not important to me. It does what it is supposed to and has enough bells and whistles for me until a real DTV can be purchased next year. Hope that helps anyone interested.

So, based on the 90-day expiration, that means yours would have been sent out on or around 2/23. That would be almost 2 weeks ago, so perhaps the "2 to 3 weeks" cited in the canned updates at dtv2009 was not an exaggeration.

Here's what I think happens: The NTIA prepares a sequence of coupons, establishing the 90-day period from that day. They then, however, ship them in bulk to one of their subcontracted mailing agencies (there's a few wasted days; I'm sure they don't overnight them), then the mailer (when they get around to it) prints out the accompanying literature and envelopes, stuffing and collating everything and presorting it according to USPS guidelines (another several days gone). Then they take the load to the post office, where they may or may not get them into the system for a day or two depending on how backed up they are.

So, a couple of weeks doesn't seem unbelievable. It is, however, annoying and unfair for them to waste as much as 23% (based on the maximum estimated delay of 3 weeks, divided into 90 days) of one's available time to use the cards. If you are waiting for a certain model to show up in stores (several models, I believe, aren't scheduled to even be released until late spring/early summer), and the card expires a week before the unit you want is available, that would suck. What they should have done is set it up like gift cards -- you get the cards, you call an automated 800 number to activate them, and THEN the 90 days begins.

But that would make too much sense.... :rolleyes:

Well, all my complaining must have worked -- I got the coupons this morning. :) My # was 362XXX, so I guess they are finally moving along on sending these things out.

I went to my nearby Radio Shack intending to get the Zenith box, which has received mostly favorable reviews. However, even though it has been publicized since mid-February that RS had the Zenith, the store said they had not received any, and confirmed that neither had any of the other area stores gotten any in yet.

What they did have were two -- exactly 2 -- of the Digital Stream units. And, believe it or not, those 2 on display were the ONLY such units this store has received! (Needless to say, I was the first person to use a coupon in the store and the clerk -- a very nice guy -- had to consult his paperwork for a few minutes to figure out how to do it.)

Well, I decided to throw caution to the wind and use one of the coupons on the DS box, even though I have not seen any detailed tests/reviews of the thing. I figured if there were any major problems, I could always exchange it for a Zenith when (if?) they come in.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the initial results. It seems pretty user friendly (to a moderately intelligent user anyway), and what was received (and how well) was almost exactly as I'd predicted, given my situation (which in many respects is far less than ideal). The channels that I thought would be major problems are indeed so, the ones that I thought would have occasional minor dropouts are also as predicted, and the best channels are the ones I figured would be.

I will try to post a more detailed review soon (not in this thread, where I think it would be pretty off-topic) when I've had more chance to play with the thing.

So I wouldn't really count on that with any of these boxes.

Don't forget, too, these units have a lot of unique features that aren't going to be accommodated on a universal remote. Things like one-button dedicated access to the EPG, CC, signal meter, etc., etc. Most of these functions can be accessed from the menu as well (and would be as well with a universal remote), but you would end up going through several more steps to get there. If your remote totally died, you would be able to still be able to use the converter, but with much more frustration accompanying. Hopefully, by the time a new remote would be needed, the various businesses online that stock and sell original or replacement/clone remotes for almost any model of electronics would have them for these units. (I recently got a new cloned remote for a quite old 13" Sylvania TV from one of these places.)

You can get a Philips, GE or RCA learning remote for $15.00 or even less, or a Sony for $25.00, if all you wanted was a remote with enough learning buttons for one of the boxes. But it might not be satisfactory for all your other devices.

I have an Onkyo HTIB and programmed an LG (vcr or dvd?) code into the Onkyo remote control. It doesn't have all of the functions, but I can change the channels and access the menu and a couple of other features.

What they should have done is set it up like gift cards -- you get the cards, you call an automated 800 number to activate them, and THEN the 90 days begins.

Used one at HH Gregg to buy the Zenith DTT 990 converyer box for 9.99 over the coupon value plus tax. I am saving the other coupon for a while to see what else proves to be a good converter box.

You can get a Philips, GE or RCA learning remote for $15.00 or even less, or a Sony for $25.00, if all you wanted was a remote with enough learning buttons for one of the boxes. But it might not be satisfactory for all your other devices.


I've had the Sony RM-VL700S learning remote for a few years and it works great for this. I keep thinking of getting a Harmony, but I am not sure if they have an easy to use learning feature like this one does. My Sony had no problem learning everything I needed from the Zenith remote. So I still only use one remote for everything.

The Philips Universal Digital DVD Learning Remote PMDVD6 is very useful for up to six devices. Devices may be assigned to just about any device button, say two different TVs in the same room. The Philips may also search for control codes for devices not listed in the twelve pages of common product codes (like that of my new Dynex TV). I purchased the Philips for less than $10 at a local Fred Meyer store (a Kroger-owned chain). Another Philips Learning Remote controls eight devices, and is priced under $18.

There's always idiots out there. Don't they know that they are in violation of Federal Law. It is a criminal offense to offer them for sale and to sell them.

When I went to redeem them, they had to enter the numbers directly into the data base at the DTV2009 web site. They are easily tracable.

That makes me angry that people are scalping them, when I am #3000ish and STILL have not received mine and can't afford to buy the converters out of pocket (and I actually need them)! I don't understand how I was one of the first to apply and the things are not arriving. It's as if they were lost in the mail. My mail carrier(s) has(have) a history of delivering someone else's mail to me, so maybe someone down the street has my coupons. Needless to say I am annoyed and trying to find out from the program administrator on what can be done.

One of the seven listings currently up attempts to sleaze by this by claiming that the coupons are a free gift with the purchase of the service of operating the auction. Doesn't matter, per FAQ #9.

Reported them to ebay. Really should report them to whatever federal authority can prosecute them.

The first surprise was C$ charged sales tax on the full retail price before the discount. The second surprise is that C$ has you sign what looks like a charge slip for $40 for each receiver you get and then another perfectly identical charge slip for the difference plus the full retail sales tax mentioned above. C$ claimed that their $40 charge slip wasn't a charge slip but it sure looked like one. Do I trust C$? Based on past bad experience with them I'm not so sure.

The government has budgeted a limited amount of money for the converter boxes. I believe the time limit is so that if the coupon is not used they can reissue that $$ for someone else. If there was no time limit then they could only send out coupons equal to the budget allocated even thougth it might not be used.

The envelopes do have a sort of "junkmail-ish" look to them -- not "official" and "governmental" looking like, say, an IRS refund or a Social Security check. I hope she didn't trash the coupons along with the cheap credit card scams and carpet cleaning ads. :(

Mine arrived today, woohoo! I applied on 1/2 and was approximately #450,000. No surprises in the list of participating retailers. I'll probably wait until this weekend to use one, because my wife and I are going up to the nearest town with a Circuit City and Best Buy then, and it looks like the Zenith/Insignia box is the best of the lot so far. Maybe I'll check the Radio Shack in a closer town first, to see if they have the Zenith, but with my luck they'll probably have the Digital Stream instead.

I have received my coupons in the mail today here in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale, FL area. I had applied for them on Jan. 2, 2008. They expire at the end of May. I hope the Channel Master CM-7000 is available before the expiration date.

I STILL don't have my coupons. I was one of the very first to apply in the THREE THOUSAND block of appliers. I still am perplexed where mine are and have contacted the ombudsman for the program because I am suspicious their system did not properly record my application at submission. I got the webpage showing my reference #, but the date showed my submission as 12/31/07, even though I applied a few minutes after watching the ball drop on New Years. Secondly I didn't realize until talking to my friend today that I should have received an email confirming my submission success. I never got any such email confirmation. It is almost as though their server didn't process my entry on this technicality. I did speak with them and was asked to give another 10 days for the postal service to deliver since their system claims coupons were sent. It has been a couple days since our conversation and still no coupons. I need to wait out another 8 days I guess.

Anyone that has a reference number below #3600, please let me know if you received your coupons. Maybe we're victims of a time-zone glitch for applying the very first moments of 2008?

My friend that applied in the afternoon on 1/1 received hers days ago and says the debit cards themselves say they cannot be replaced if lost or stolen, but what if you never received them to lose them or have them stolen?

There is no email to confirm the application. The application site was not up until the morning of January 1, 2008. I tried at 7 AM, and the system gave me an error message. It was not until about 10:30 AM until I got a registration number.

I received my coupons on March 6, 2008. Three other persons who I helped to apply have since received theirs.

We are both located in Portland Oregon.

The cards are mailed by Mail Services, Inc., a company with locations in Sterling VA and Des Plaines IL. The return address shown on the envelope is the official mailing address for the TV Converter Box Coupon Program, PO Box 3019, Portland OR 97208-3019.

That's funny.. my friend forwarded the confirmation email she received when she applied. I didn't get one either, nor have my coupons arrived. The ombudsman wrote back today and asked me to wait 2 more weeks for the coupons to arrive. You know I will keep checking. She didn't specify what recourse if they don't show up. I guess we'll deal with that down the road if they don't ever show.

I agree, but from what I gather no-one knows how the Echostar TR40 will be marketed or where you can buy them. I've heard May or maybe June availability, but the TR40 obviously isn't ready for market. That's why I went ahead and redeemed the coupons. Too many uncertainties with the Echostar unit. You can always redeem them with what is available on the retailer shelves now and buy out-of-pocket when the TR40 or the upgraded TR50 DVR version becomes available, then sell your non-wanted units on eBay.

I think the intent was. I'm guilty of obtaining two coupons myself. I am however planning to donate the two boxes I get, first to any family of limited means. And if i'm unable to find them, then to an organization. But usually our department at work adopts a couple of families for christmas. They will most likely get the boxes along with antennas, if they want them.

Bought 2 Zenith boxes yesterday on bob d's review and recommendation. they work great - thanks for the advice. Get 10 channels (including 5 simulcast channels) instead of 4/2 fuzzy ones.

With respect to the coupons, I don’t know if they are specifically for those of lesser means as much the gov’t trying to be “fair” to those of us, rich poor and in between who do not pay for cable/satellite but who are losing the access we originally had when we bought our analog tvs in good faith – think of it like eminent donmain in the form of a $40 coupon. I spend my premium service money on DSL, which is more important to us than Cable/satellite. Honestly, when I use my friends cable/satellite, other than rerun of COPS, I usually feel like "all these channels and there is nothing on!" I also don’t feel bad about this government expense, since it is dwarfed by what the gov’t will make selling off the analog spectrum.

I got my coupons on March 14 and requested them on 1/2/2008. Last Saturday I went Radio Shack to purchase the Zenith unit. They didn't have it in stock because it is in short supply, but he ordered it and I picked it up today (3/19/2008). It works very good, it picked all the channels and got rid of the multipath signal interference. The picture is very sharp. I'm impressed. My only problem is that I have a VCR attached to the antenna and I use it several times a week to record programs with the VCR programmed. It seems that I will to preselect the channel and then record channel 3. Anyone have a work around for a programmed VCR.

I got my coupons on March 14 and requested them on 1/2/2008. Last Saturday I went Radio Shack to purchase the Zenith unit. They didn't have it in stock because it is in short supply, but he ordered it and I picked it up today (3/19/2008). It works very good, it picked all the channels and got rid of the multipath signal interference. The picture is very sharp. I'm impressed. My only problem is that I have a VCR attached to the antenna and I use it several times a week to record programs with the VCR programmed. It seems that I will to preselect the channel and then record channel 3. Anyone have a work around for a programmed VCR.

My Coupon arrived in the mail. Just checked it. Expires on June 06. :) Woohoo, *jumping around like a 4 year old* Comes in a plain white envelope like everyone says so be careful you don't throw it away thinking it's junkmail. It does say TV voucher program on the top left corner.

I think the ref# is printed somewhere on the mailing where the cards are attached (according to a friend I asked).

I really think mine are lost in the mail. I'll try the rain dance. Lord knows we got enough rain the last day and so. :)

The first wave will be exhausted by the time mine are sent and received. Still cannot believe I was nearly first to apply and no coupons yet! My ref # is mid THREE THOUSAND (as in #3500 thereabouts). Still have a week and a half more to wait before some kind of action can be taken. Best case is they re-issue (since they were never received) and the new ones come with a new expiration date (assuming they even sent any to me, without respect to what my website status says).

Best of luck, I hope they will reissue them if the originals aren't received. Back in November, a Priority Mail package (2-3 day delivery time, typically) that a friend sent me took almost 10 days to arrive.

We both became convinced that it was somehow lost, but it finally reached its destination when least expected. Hopefully the same thing will happen with your coupons.

After watching one night:

As I mentioned before the signal is great. There is no multipath interference and the picture is sharp. However as expected a DTV picture does not fill the screen. It does fill horizonally and then you have bars on the top and bottom. However when a regular 4:3 signal comes through there are verticle bars on the sides too. We have a 21" TV which you see 20", but with a 4:3 signal now we have a 16" set. One other thing, I usually watch the Nightly Business Report on my local PBS station. It comes on at 7:00PM right after The News Hour, well, on the DTV signal, I watched The News Hour as usual and at 7:00PM they repeated the News Hour, no Nightly Business Report. I checked the other DTV channels for the station but no NBR. I had to rush to the other TV to the program (no converter). I quickly sent an e-mail to the station to find out what is going on.

Has anyone gotten their $40. digital tuner coupon in the mail yet?

It comes on at 7:00PM right after The News Hour, well, on the DTV signal, I watched The News Hour as usual and at 7:00PM they repeated the News Hour, no Nightly Business Report. It took 12 hours of walking around but now have a solution for TV system with a VCR/DVD and the converter. I attached the antenna to a 2 port splitter. One of the splitter outputs goes to the converter and the other splitter output goes to the VCR/DVD. As usual the TV-RF output of the VCR goes to the TV. I use the video and audio outputs from the converter and input them to the TV Video 1. I'm all set to record analog TV as usual and can play back the VCR/DVD to the TV as needed. But I also can view the digital programming too. One complaint though that I mentioned before is that the TV stations sometimes are not transmitting the same signal in digital as analog. But typically the stations transmit more channels or programs at the same time. Our local PBS can tranmit up to 5 channels at the same time.

Does your converter's remote have a "zoom" button? With the Insignia/Zenith, it's possible to fill a standard screen by setting the zoom function to "cropped." This can be especially welcome with those 4:3 signals that you're speaking of, which are surrounded on each side by black bars...I can't tolerate that either.

Hey, your suggestion works great. I really like the Zenith unit. The other unit available around here is the Digital Stream. But when I read reviews it didn't do as well as the Zenith.

The NTIA website finally updated the mailing status numbers. As of right now application number 2,283,627 has been mailed. Number 2,283,628 and 2,283,629 were rejected. Number 2,283,630 has not been mailed yet.

True. I actually knew a guy fired/arrested for stealing Carolina basketball and football tickets while he worked at the Chapel Hill post office. I think this is a pretty much common occurence.

I've applied for these coupons, but I'm not sure they pertain to me. At home I have two HD Tv's hooked up through Comcast cable. So at home, NO.

But at work I have a spliced cable line into my TIVO and than to my TV. I wanted to get a small LCD TV for my desk, but probably won't because I won't be able to use it to its fullest level. Which is HD content.

Sometimes I think that Ebay is the worst thing that ever happened to this country--though I had a good time, Christmas before last, amusing myself by following auctions for the Playstation 3, with "Buy it Now" prices of $1,000,000 or higher.

I thought of thanking the government for giving me $80 worth of converter box coupons. Then I realized that I pay taxes so it's my own money in the first place. I asked a government official about this. He said that I was greatly mistaken, it was not my own money coming back to me. He said that $250 taken from a taxpayer in North Carolina was converted by the federal government, after deducting the government's expenses, into my coupons worth $80. Whew! I'm sure lucky to live in Oregon. (And let me add my thanks to the taxpayer in North Carolina.)

Just got coupons yesterday, applied first week of January. Getting the Zenith here is going to be more difficult, Radio Shack in my town only carries DigitalStream STX9900 and they aren't interested in ordering any from other stores--I'll never shop there again. Wal-mart only carries RCA, will have to drive an hour to get Zenith--if in stock. I guess waiting for coupon was easy part.
