View Full Version : Media sharing not using UPnP (2wire gateways)

I have a 2Wire Home Portal from AT&T for my DSL services. I got the PS3 connected to the internet and Sony network no problem. I was trying to use WMP as my media server so I can use the PS3 media share services.

It seems that WMP and other media servers require UPnP services and the 2Wire does not support that service.

Are there any workarounds to this?

I am using wmp11. Did you have to go into your 2Wire network setup to get it to work?

I have two wire network DSL. (Not AT&T) How do you have your PS3 and PC hooked up to the DSL is the question? I had no problems going through a switch. DSL Cat 5 out to Switch, PS3 and PC plugged into the switch. Switch would assign IP addy's to the PS3 and PC. This was all before I finished up my home Giga Bit Lan network.

My PC is connected to the DSL via Ethernet cable, PS3 is connected via wireless connection. I can't connect PS3 via ethernet cable.

The DSL modem is also your wifi connection? If so you might want to log into it and see if UpNp is turned off.

Thanks. Yes, my DSL modem is my wifi connection. I logged in to see if I could enable UpNp and it the modem does not support UpNp. I find that strange but I am going to see if I can change out the modem.

Sorry to piggyback here, but I've been trying to get my PS3 to recognize my laptop (and vice versa) for a number of weeks now and am surprised not to see similar problems listed here. However, this post came closest to possibly answering my problem. I also have 2wire/at&t/dsl. My PS3 has no problem w/ internet access, nor does my laptop (both through the same 2wire wireless router), but they won't recognize each other. I have no idea what UpNp is, but is this the reason why?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. I have my PS3 connecting to the internet with no problems. I have tried to open up ports, etc but cannot get WMP to act as a media server. It does seem that the 2wire wireless router cannot do UpNp and without that protocol you can't get it to act like a media server.

I would like to know if anybody using 2wire products have been able to use WMP as their media server.

I had no problem with it. I have 2 wire ADSL from Cincinnati Bell 2.0 Meg down 800Kbps up. It's a two wire system with a Cisco modem. (cant remember the model off the top of my head) I had the PS3 plugged into a Netgear switch, and the switch into the cisco modem. The switch assigned private IP's to my PC and PS3 Upnp (Universal Plug and Play) worked just fine, and Windows Media player could/ would stream content to the PS3. Maybe the switch was the work around for the 2 wire modems fault. I dunno.

upnp on the 2wire is meaningless. When you get upnp on a router, it just means that other devices can see it and connect to it a little easier. First, you have to make sure that upnp is enabled within Windows. Second, you have to be sure that WMP11 is set to enable sharing. Third, you have to turn on your PS3 so that it is looking for media servers, then you have to add it as an "Allowed Device" through the sharing options within WMP11 (it doesn't show up as Playstation 3 as I recall, I think it just says Unknown Device).

Might I also suggest that Winamp Remote will allow the same functionality while also giving you access to your music and video files from anywhere you have an internet connection. Once installed, you shouldn't have to do anything to get the PS3 to see it, though the program has to be allowed through the Windows firewall (another thing to check with WMP11 sharing as well).

I posted a similar question on another thread and had some luck.

Go to #15418.

My problem was the firewall and not 2Wire after all. Problem now is that I can't enable my firewall and still have the network. (My newest woes are described in more detail in post #15434.)

At any rate, I've lost a bit of my fire on this now. I was hoping that my PS3 could simply double as another hard drive on a network. Now it seems it can't do that (not DLNA compliant??). All you can hope to do it get it to recognize Windows Media Player and listen to content via that. Like most people, I use iTunes and I guess Apple and Microsoft won't play nice so now I can't listen to my iTunes songs via WMP via PS3.

I must say I'm a bit disappointed in the PS3 now. I thought it was supposed to be this Trojan horse media server. Seems to me that anything that can only communicate w/ one program (WMP) is a bit limited in that capacity.

I listen to all of my IPOD library via the PS3 using Tversity. It works great! Get song titles and everything. Give it a try you might like it. I ditched WMP because I had to many problems.

I was having the same problem as you all. I have Bell Sympatico internet with the 2Wire modem. I was able to get the PS3 connected to the internet using the basic setup but it would not recognize WMP11 on my laptop (HP running Windows Vista). I tried everything possible, but finally stumbled onto the fact the the IP address assigned to the PS3 was not private... ie 192.168... i logged into the 2 Wire modem and checked the config and changed the IP given to the PS3 from Public to Private (fixed) and BINGO.. WMP11 finally saw the 'unknown device' when i go to media sharing. Here is a link to another site that has info on how to change this in the 2Wire...

My top level problem is that I cannot get WMP11 to become a media server. When I go into the Library tab and try to select Media sharing and the "Share my media" box. I check this box, click OK and then nothing happens and the box becomes unchecked.

You'll need to play around with the Ip settings, and see which one works best. I run my 360 on DMZplus mode, and my PC has all the ports in the Application support page I need. I also manually input my IP in the 360 settings, or else I couldn't see the pc. Even if you have windows firewall disabled, enable the ports and apps in there as well.

Vista makes it a million times harder as well, as soon as i switched back to XP eveything worked fine.

I went into my Computer services to make sure that the UPnp service was active. I have it set on Automatic. When I hit the "start this service" a popup come up that says "Universal Plug & Play Device Host service started and then stopped." Maybe something is turning this service off everytime I try to start it up and that is my problem.

The 2wire does not support PnP, also the latest firmware is required, however, it does not affect any devices on the actual lan.

You should be able to share your media using WMP11.

Have you tried TVersity?

Make sure you're not using the USB port if this is the USB version? -B or the actual USB model?

Don't use any third party forum its not useful. Use www.2wire.com support.

bell Sympatico you must be in Canada? You guys either have a 1800hg-b 2701hg-b.

Yes its great to assign static IP's so the PS3 will be assigned a static IP.

modem is 2701-HGG. Bell Canada ROCKS! Also, i got the tversity streaming also. I have been having problems with WMP11 streaming and PS3 giving errors that it cannot play. I get about 10 seconds into the video and get an error 8002880C. That made me switch to tversity, although i found that i have to set tversity to always decode. Seems to have done the trick.

I have a 2wire 2700hw-g (?) and it works just fine with TVersity. I just made sure to go into the firewall settings (on the 2wire's interface) and open all the ports listed on Sony's support page. Never tried WMP11 with the PS3.

I got a new computer and with the new computer I finally got it all to work. I think the problem with my old computer had to do with firewalls on the old computer and getting UpnP to be an active service on my old computer.

I did not make any changes to my 2Wire Gateway at all when I got the new computer. Hence, I surmize that the problem was with the old computer settings and not the 2Wire.
