View Full Version : Study Shows: We fabricate our own reality when the context of observations is vague.

Basically what the article says that when faced with making a vague determination about something we've observed, we often produce our own reality that conflicts with what our eyes and ears are reporting. The less vague the circumstances are, the more likely that our senses and our "beliefs" will actually agree.
What is more vague than an observation about a multi thousand dollar power cable claimed to be "airy with a forward sound stage?"
The point is, when you hold strong beliefs about a subject that is hard to settle factually, your beliefs tend to override reality, and thus you WILL imagine yourself to have heard something that probably wasn't there in the first place. Those who are averse to finding facts independent of their flawed observations will just repeat the cycle of unconscious self-deception.
So next time you say "it was really hard to determine, but I strongly believe that [my expensive component] had an effect on the sound quality" consider that you may have, without even knowing it, allowed yourself to become victim to this phenomena.
Bob Lee (QSC) 02-21-08, 08:39 PM Interesting!
From your user name, I'd guess you're into tubes? ;)
hifiHigh 02-21-08, 08:56 PM shoot bro, I don't need to read or see a scientific study to know that...physic self actualization runs rampant in high society....;)
Pitot Static 02-21-08, 09:36 PM Haha, well come on, the pitot tube is only half the static system and only is relevant to one instrument. Screw tubes.
We call it the placebo effect. We've known about it for decades. I hope someone didn't pay too much for this study.
zoney99 02-22-08, 10:52 AM Pitot I don't think you screw tubes, I think you use pins to place them in sockets.
For some of us "older" guys into the hardware aspects, tubes satisfy the nostalgia craving - the old days, the pioneering into the field before it was all mass-marketed drivel. It's like the few of us who remember that AR and KLH were "made in the USA" and not just another name sold to be made in China shiite and sold off the shelf in WalMart. Don't even bother arguing about tube v. solid state: not interested in technical arguments; just interested in having fun.
screw tubes - please reconsider.

Well, you can't make a pun from "You're into airspeed indication, huh?" ;)
zoney99 02-22-08, 01:46 PM thanks krabby that was fun! I drink to krabapple tonight
Pitot Static 02-22-08, 02:15 PM In case the joke figuratively flew over your head, its because the joke LITERALLY flew over your head. The pitot static system is what determines altitude and airspeed in a plane... and thus it just flew right over your head!

Throw in the fact that almost everyone on these boards is anonymous and basically unaccountable for anything they post, and you get loads of nonsense.

 And who might be these unnacountable users who post nonsense?
krabapple 02-22-08, 06:29 PM where's that guy who wraps all his connectors and cables in magic paper?

Are you really sure he's talking about connectors? :p

These posts show that the static port does not get the respect and recognition that it should. I admit though that the tube (valve) fans are pretty much a static lot in terms of progress.;)
