View Full Version : COD4 video vs Chernobyl Real LIFE
http://youtube.com/watch?v=SdAANvyapCc
WOW, all us COD4 fans will really enjoy this one!! Real treat, someone went to Chernobyl and took these real life pics that the COD4 maps are based on. I never realized it was actually a REAL place.
Also, its amazing how all that is deserted and just left as is. Let me know what you guys think.

mpalmieri1203 02-21-08, 07:19 PM Wow thanks for the upload that was very very cool..It's creepy and amazing.
It's interesting to see the city deteriorate without any human upkeep. There was a show on TLC that used the city as an example of what would happen around the globe if humans just DISAPPEARED.
i know right!! I Wonder if activision or inifity ward had to get permission for the maps.
Wow...that is really creepy and amazing at the same time.
Durbo20vT 02-21-08, 08:18 PM my bro showed me this a few days ago... thats wild!
suavecito_md 02-21-08, 08:51 PM I think this is a good example of the level realism that experienced (i.e. older) gamers expect. I had a feeling that the game map was based on the actual Chernobyl. Thanks Infinity Ward!
bkchurch 02-21-08, 09:03 PM Those are amazing and all but you didn't realize Chernobyl was a real place? No offense but that just strikes me as weird what with it being one of the only two major nuclear power plant disasters to ever occur. (There might be a third I can't just can't think of it right now)

What was the second?

(There might be a third I can't just can't think of it right now)I know about Chernobyl, but I had no idea the game was based there. Would I have been clued in by playing the single player? I recognize a few of the pictures and locations from some of the multiplayer maps, but that's about it. It is cool/interesting/creepy at any rate.
SSJVejita1 02-21-08, 11:20 PM What was the second?
I believe it was Three Mile Island.

Yea, there's a level that takes place in Chernobyl in the single player campaign. Some of the locations in the level are exactly like the pictures in that video.
I believe it was Three Mile Island.
Yup
assasyn 02-21-08, 11:39 PM I was thinking Three Mile Island, but that kinda, only sorta, happened, partly.

Still counts :p

Right, I wouldn't want to have been anywhere near that.
pdiss88 02-22-08, 01:29 AM Yeah, I had already seen some in-depth pictures of Chernobyl before the game came out and I was surprised at how detailed the game was and even had the landmark locations featured in the game.
PJ_Rage 02-22-08, 07:22 AM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_civilian_nuclear_accidents
Assuming all of the "level needed" incidents were low level ones, the top two are Chernobyl, level 7, and then Three Mile Island, level 5.
Dixie Flatline 02-22-08, 09:04 AM Actually, the game never visits Chernobyl. The abandoned city is Pripyat, which was built to house the workers for the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The city of Chernobyl itself is some miles away, and still has a few long-term residents, mostly those whose job it is to monitor the Zone of Alienation around the plant.
Some excellent pictures are also to be found here: http://kiddofspeed.com/ The author appears to have distorted her story a bit (about riding her motorcycle into the Zone of Alienation alone), but the pictures are real.

Realizing Chernobyl is a real place, and knowing that the game is pretty damn accurate in its portrayal of the area are two different things.
I have known about Chernobyl since it happened, but I certainly didn't realize the ferris wheel in the game was based on a real ferris wheel.

Granted I am 46, but it seems so weird some have never heard of it.
PJ_Rage 02-22-08, 10:08 AM As Dixie mentioned, Elena's story seems contested for accuracy. It seems that maybe she isn't who she says she is. But the pictures are real, although some are possibly staged. Source: http://maisonbisson.com/blog/post/10300.
Either way, I enjoyed it.
I believe it was Three Mile Island.
Yup.. I grew up just a mile or two from there.. Middletown, PA

I just knew this site was gonna pop up. Yeah she was debunked a couple of years ago about her exploits of riding to "Chernobyl" which as you said is miles away from Pripyat. Her exploits were all over the motorcycle forum world. Only a small number of people will ever (in our life time) be allowed in Chernobyl. And even fewer will get to go to the Plant. I hear they still have plans to "bury" the plant in concrete.

The first clue would be the opening statement once you get past the IW and Activision logos. "50,000 people used to live here"

As I understand it, her photographs are real, but she took them on a guided tour of Pripyat (which is right next to the plant), not going in by herself as she claimed. There's an interesting read here (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/culture/articles/010820/archive_038228.htm), though, about Alexander Borovoi, one of the original "stalkers" who actually went into the ruins of the reactor trying to map out the location of the melted reactor fuel to make sure it couldn't go critical again.
PJ_Rage 02-22-08, 11:22 AM The first clue would be the opening statement once you get past the IW and Activision logos. "50,000 people used to live here"Heh, yeah, that video that I press X right after I hear "50,000 p..." to skip ;)
I did watch it the first time I booted the game, I just had no idea it was Chernobyl. I guess I didn't put two and two together, because it wasn't evident to me how a nuclear accident site and a modern war game went together. I've always assumed that the story line was something about a nuclear bomb going off and war ensuing afterward. And that that was what the 50,000 people died from. Maybe I would have / could have known better if I actually played the SP :p

Right her photos are real. But the way she told the story made it seem as if she did it all on her own, and actually rode her bike to the locations. Misleading the say the least. Still very interesting though. I watched the Discovery channel special on Chernobyl. And I myself have been to the Ukraine. (Odessa) And have a Neighbor (husband and wife) who are from the Ukraine. I guess I'm a bit fasinated by the whole event....Weird I guess..

I actually looked up the tour she went on, and looked at how much plane tickets would be, lol. Looks like I could get that same tour for ~$1500-2000 total trip cost :p

Haha, I always skip the video too...
But 50,000 people diddnt die, well some did, but they all had to evacuate. Thats why they say "used" to live here, not DIED here.
But the game did a spot on job of recreating the pyripat area well...
Im like laughing at everyone saying its creepy or weird... how is it creepy? what is to understand? chernobyl is a real place and they made the game after it... whats so hard to understand....?

I dont think anyone is saying that the game is weird. Just that the renewed interest in Chernobyl, and the thought of basing scenes of a video game in a town that was devistated by the disaster that happened there is wierd. The game isnt based on Chernobyl,(meltdown) or ANY of the events that happened there. just that the (real life ) town Pripyat was used as a backdrop of a video game story line, and done so very well, and in such detail. Is a bit..odd/creepy/ or weird to some. Espically to those who just thought..it was just CG stuff and doesnt really exsist on this planet.
It did happend over 20 years ago.. most of the kids playing COD 4 werent even born then. So they only know about it, via text books, and TV. Unlike those old enough to actually remember it.
PJ_Rage 02-22-08, 03:29 PM It is weird/creepy because I thought I had been playing this game in a made up place. And it turns out, it is a real place. It is creepy to see real photos of a place you thought was fake. (Not that I thought Chernobyl was fake, I just didn't know it was Chernobyl).
ferrisg 02-22-08, 04:25 PM I hear they still have plans to "bury" the plant in concrete.
It already is, but the sarcophagus is in bad shape. There are plans to build a second sarcophagus around the first that will hopefully last.
RoguishClyde 02-22-08, 04:47 PM We'll the messed up thing is people still work and live there. One of the reactors was still running in 2001. Not sure if it still is or not. It's very serious isuue and the fact that its still affecting the workd today 21 years later is assonishing. There are many different reports and more videos on Youtube. Since this was brought up all who are not aware should take some time to learn about one of the biggest dissaters in Human history. See some pics on this site below. There are some very interesting pictures and a lot of these pics resmbels scense in COD4. Even the downed helicopter.
Just remeber that this location is still extremely radio active and is only geting worse as the plants and animals grow. Don't forget the fact that the cooling pools are located just meeters from 2 large rivers.

Oh ok... well its creepy enough if you put it that way I guess. So what level exactly do you play at Chernobyl on?

Right. I was talkin about the second Sarcophagus. Daunting project..to say the least.

In the single player mode (if you played through it) The Pripyat setting is one where you are sniping from the building, and shoot the bad guy (forgot his name) with the Barrett 50 cal and blow off his arm. Then escape and your partner gets hurt and you gotta carry him out to the ferris wheel (and watch were you are going,to stay out of the radio active zones) Fight off the bad guys at the LZ until the Helo comes to get you.

Yes. I thought with half life some radiation takes hundreds of years to break down to safe levels.
In the History Channel Documentary Life After People (http://www.history.com/minisite.do?content_type=Minisite_Generic&content_type_id=57785&display_order=6&mini_id=57517) they do a walk-through of all those Chernobyl locations shot realtime with a HD camera. If you have HistoryHD I highly encourage you to watch this documentary. It really freaked me out how much it felt like I was exactly in COD4 again, especially when they got to the ferris wheel and showed the bumper cars. Freaky.

If that's true (re: radio activity "getting worse"), then how come there are group tours to Pripyat year-round?
By the way, here is the photo of the level where you have to survive the onslaught of soldiers at the ferris wheel and the bumper cars:
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/1237/39chernobylek9.jpg
I find the only way to survive that level is to hide around a corner by the bumper cars and wait for the enemies to just funnel into my firing sight.

Check the reading on this dudes meter. It is 2006 but that's not long ago. I know they have tours and stuff but I don't know, it seems to still involve some risk.

The readings from the video are using a different scale than is commonly used for radiation workers in the US. (similar to metric system vs. US) Because of the different system, I can't tell how it translates to compare what I get working in various nuclear plants.
The readings do show elevated rates, which means more than normal background radiation. Natural background radiation that everyone is exposed to, amounts to about 30 millirems per year. (for comparison)As a radiation worker, the US government allows you an exposure of 5000 millirems per year. The company I work for allows half of that, so if you reach that number, you're done for the year. While I'm sure it's not healthy, what they were picking up was no where near life-threatening.
Very interesting they would use this location in a video game, I may have to buy it now....:D
dropgems 02-23-08, 01:25 PM Best level in the game. The radiation along the outskirts isn't that bad, it'll be habitable in prob 300 years. Animal life has flourished too with no mutations of any sort. Interesting...
