View Full Version : So I just purchased a TH-50PH10UKA :)

I've had the good 'ole Vizio now since about December or so. Don't get me wrong, the display truly has a wonderful picture when it is fed a good HD signal. It even does justice to upconverted DVD. But the macro blocking, posterization, false contouring and that whole bag of "I wish I was just oblivious like 99% of the population" items keeps haunting me.

So the Vizio will be going back to where it came from and will soon be replaced with Panasonic's TH-50PH10UKA. I just ordered it about an hour ago. I then went straight to eBay and purchased the pedestal stand for it. The way my furniture is configured, the pedestal really is ideal. It was about fifty cheaper from what appeared to be a really good seller with a 99.9% feedback.

Like so many others on here, I use the display solely as a monitor. So the commercial line of Panasonic really was perfect for me.

But this is it. I am really glad I purchased it online. Now, it is mine to keep. No more option of returning it. I need that closure. But I am confident I took the right step in the best direction by getting a Panasonic ESPECIALLY over the Vizio.

I will continue to update this thread. When the delivery comes, I will be there with my camera to document the arrival. And that will be followed up with before and after pictures. And then I will get to post my personal opinion on the PQ.

The best part about the whole experience is just how much displays have come down. And the fact I bought the TH-50PH10UKA for what I did is just mind boggling. It made having to shell out a little over a $100 for the stand not so hard to swallow.

What's the best deal out there for one at this time? They seem overpriced compared to their consumer counterparts IMHO. I want one, but not willing to shell out the dough.

Congrats, I got mine on Monday and I'm loving it also!! It replaced a 42" and I'm sooo glad I went up in size, it's awesome, although SD can be a little ugly from my 7-9ft viewing distance on such a big screen. Be warned that this set does have a false contouring issue as well, pretty much all pannies do so don't flip out on your first shot of a sunset when you get a little banding in the sky. But I'll take it for such a beautiful, saturated picture.

My mom is very jealous, since my parents bought a 42" 5uy ED set about 5 years ago and dropped 5 grand on it, and now I got my 50" HD 10uk for like a quarter of that price. :D I also got a free stand because theirs is wall-mounted and they have the old duck foot ty-st05k which fits the 10uk perfectly. Not quite as elegant as the pedestal, but it looks much better than I thought and free is free!! You can find the duck foot stands and other compatible stands for $50 on eBay.

Too bad the consumer stands don't fit (they have a differently shaped post with different hole spacing), since there are tons of dirt cheap pedestal stands from consumer sets on Ebay from people who have wall-mounted.

To audioexcels: yes, the consumer/pro question is a little different now, since the very best price I could find on a 50px75u was a couple hundred cheaper than the 50ph10uka.

However, the addition of the dual-HDMI input as a standard on the UKA models really changes their value proposition, since instead only having one HD input built-in there are now three. And most people have an A/V receiver that can switch component video. For example, I already have a Denon 2105 with three component inputs so I have 5 inputs available for HD sources (3 component, 2 hdmi in the UKA).

Besides, I think the 75u's are pretty ugly, and that was the only 50" consumer model I could afford (couldn't really fit a 50" with side speakers, the 10uk fit in perfectly). I absolutely LOVE the look of the pro model, it's so sleek and the thin bezel makes it look barely bigger than the old wide-bezel 600u, despite being a 50" vs. a 42". And then when you turn it on, it's all screen! Looks awesome. Plus, it's a tweaker's delight with all of the adjustments you have available.

Had mine for a couple weeks now & can't get the pic adjusted to where I want it.
Have noticed the false contouring as well as some clay face maybe.
It really varies from channel to channel tho & HDDVD's look very close to pic I am after.
The CNET settings look like total crap on my panel.

:p I am Italian too. It is always funny when someone else knows what my screen name is! You're only about the 2nd person who's ever brought it up. And I use the same exact screen name on every forum I am on. I just googled Stroonzo and sure enough, many of the forums come up. Some of the hits are other user names of Stroonzo who are certainly not me (I am not a nurse or a big fatty guy with a geeky shirt on).

I just purchased this monitor today and can't wait to see the image. So who knows the best software or calibrating tools to give me the best picture possible?

First of all, what the ______ was I smoking? There is no comparison between the pure life-like images the TH-50PH10UK produces over that Shitzio, I mean Vizio I had. I am so satisfied now. Really. Wow. I have seen the light.

I started out with the CNET suggested settings. They were pretty good, but after running JKP's DVE, I found my best setting to be the following:

Picture menu: Cinema
Picture: 14
Brightness: 1
Sharpness: 1
Color 1
Color Temp: Warm
Color Management: Off
Advanced Settings: On
Black Extension: 0
Input Level: 0
Gamma: 2.5
W/B High R: 5
W/B High G: -11
W/B High B: -1
W/B Low R: 6
W/B Low G: 8
W/B Low B: 1

Setup menu
Signal sub-menu:
3:2 pulldown: On
Video NR: Off

Power save: Off
Standby save: On
Power management: Off
Auto power off: Off

Just as stated in the CNET review, green was IMPOSSIBLE. But the only place I notice it is looking through the green filter during calibration. Red and Blue are 100% perfection (according to the filters). I've never seen such beautiful SMPTE color bars :p . I am sure there are better monitors out there, but dang, for the steal one can pick up the 10UKA for....

I took some pictures of it in action, but you know, they're pictures of a TV. So maybe they can tell you something, but it is NOTHING like sitting here looking at it. I went ahead and refrained from compressing the images more than the camera already did. So be warned they're about 2MB each. But the page has them in thumbnails. You can see them here:

Can you load in the same Planet Earth Blue Ray shots that were taken in the Kuro thread? Or shots from 300 or other new movies on Blue Ray or HD-DVD?

Stroonzo
02-28-08, 10:29 AM
I would, but all I have is an up-converting DVD player. The shots I took were from Comcast HD. Sorry.

But even this morning I noticed more good things about the Panasonic. My little girl watches, every morning, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Handy Manny, Backyardigans, Doodle Bops etc. Well Disney and Nickelodeon here is not in HD. It has always looked kind of like poo on the Vizio. Wow. Not now. All of the really bad macroblocking and posterization is gone. I've been told on here that posterization is sort of issue even with the Panasonics, but if so, it is nothing like the Vizio was. And I was giving it the true test of an SD feed.

What? I was told that all 10-series professional pannys have a 2-year in-home warranty?

Check out Visual Apex's description of the 50ph10uka:

http://www.visualapex.com/plasma/Plasma_details.asp?VA=Panasonic&chPartNumber=TH-50PH10UKA

quoting:

STANDARD 2 YEAR P&L WARRANTY
Panasonic is proud to demonstrate the performance and quality of its Professional Displays by offering a standard 2 year warranty for both Parts and Labor on all 10 Series “PF” Full HD and 10 Series “PH” HD Professional Displays. Warranty offers standard on-site service.

So I called them back and walked the guy through their website to get to that press release. He read it, put me on hold and came back to confirm INDEED the TV has a two year P&L warranty.

So I asked him, is this something that needs to be noted in my registration since I have now spoken with two customer service reps who were unaware of this information. He stated that my registration has been updated to reflect the press release information. So FYI for all of you 9 & 10 Series owners. You may want to just call for peace of mind and make sure it is noted on your file with Panasonic.

So I really feel like I need to give an update about this display now that I've had it for a few days.

It is amazing. It really made a huge difference in picture quality over the Vizio. With the CNET setting tweaked a little after DVE I have the most natural picture I think, but it takes some getting used to a warm picture when we're always blasted with super blue (hotter pictures (but usually referred to as cool color setting). The processing on the TV must be much more accurate than the Vizio. Issues of posterization, macro blocking, and false contouring are pretty much gone. The only time I might see any slight issues are with a very poor signal feed (such as a low band analog station like KNWS here in Houston). But even most Standard Definition looks amazingly clear without any of the issues mentioned. It is obvious now how bad Vizio processing was.

Ordering online was no problem at all. It arrived at our front door in only four business days after I ordered it (from CA to TX)!

Bottom line - Much better than the Vizio.

These Panasonics are my favorite styling of any flat-panel I've seen. It's not flashy at all, and I love that. It's too bad everything has to be that glossy piano black nowadays (which isn't bad, really, but some variety is nice).

Who did you order from, Stroonzo? I couldn't find it mentioned in the topic anywhere.

Wow. You are so right. And I hadn't even mentioned the difference in Image Retention!!!! But I was logging in just to make note of that difference.

Seriously, IR on the Vizio was just a common thing. It was to be expected. Sure it went away fast, but it was always there.

I have seen absolutely zero IR on the Panasonic yet. That was a big surprise to me. After owning the Vizio, I was made to think IR was just normal (at least to the degree the Vizio produced it). But no, apparently that was not the case.

I have really enjoyed the lesser need to be an IR Nazi in my house.

Too bad the consumer stands don't fit (they have a differently shaped post with different hole spacing), since there are tons of dirt cheap pedestal stands from consumer sets on Ebay from people who have wall-mounted.

So it's the shape of the stand post that makes the consumer stands not fit?

I'm going to have a spare stand from wall mounting my 42'' consumer model. According to the CAD drawing of the professional models the holes are 27'' inches apart which is exactly how far apart the holes in my 42'' consumer model are.

Hey Everyone:

I have a Panny 42" ED that we've had 3 years now. I'm thinking about upgrading to a 50" but don't have the cash to buy a good 1080p. So my dilemma is, do I wait until prices come down, or do I go with the 50PH10UKA? My previous purchase had been based on the a similar quality of the ED versus HD on a 42". We have been extremely happy with the ED and fear upgrading to 720 will be disappointing when compared to a 1080p.

Yes, the shape of the posts are different.

Some of the stands that are a flat bar atop a base can swap the posts with those from a TY-ST42PA20 which will fit the Pro models.

Purely a mechanical noise from the thermal expansion/contraction.
There is a note about this in the troubleshooting section of the Operations Manual.

The fix is the same as used on the consumer units suffering this complaint. Washers are added between the frame and panel to allow controlled slippage which eliminates the noise. Tell your "tech" to check with the consumer hotline for more info.

Well, had the tech guy here from Panasonics authorized repair shop and didn’t accomplish much. The tech was saying that the noise was from my plasma bracket that was attached to the plasma. Since it’s new I’m going to swap it out with the same model and see if I have the same noise. If I have the same problem I will contact Panasonic and request another authorized shop to look into the issue. This would be a perfect unit if it wasn’t for this annoying popping noise from the rear every few minutes.[/QUOTE]

Can anyone tell me if I don’t use washers or spring load washers when installing the wall mount brackets will it cause the bolts to just turn and turn when it’s screwed in all the way???? I have installed all four screws without washers and have noticed that the screws won’t tighten; you can just keep on turning them. The short ones that came with the plasma have two types of washers and were tight, can’t seem to duplicate the same with the bracket installed. Please advise, thank you.
