LITEGUY2004 02-22-08, 08:40 AM I am considering a panasonic plasma tv
is the 1080p version worth the extra money over the 720 p
Is is my guess that in a year the 720p tv s will be phased out and the 1080p the only ones left

Tony Touch 02-22-08, 08:50 AM What size are you looking at? Will this be your main home theater tv, or just a bedroom TV? Do you plan on buying a Blu-ray player?
I am also considering 720, for a 42" model I want to put in my bedroom. I don't plan on using this tv for blu-ray, so I don't see the need to spend the extra money to get 1080p. What I am still trying to find out though, is if the new PX80 720 model uses lower quality parts than the other ones. The MSRP on this TV is very low, and it has a 15000:1 CR.
LITEGUY2004 02-22-08, 08:57 AM I have an optoma hd 70 with a 160" picture- wall only-no screen. I am considering replacing it with a 50" plasma so I can watch it from my kitchen as well as the livingroom. and then moving the projector to the basement.
Most viewing is with Ota antenna- many hd signals. Some dvd- only 1080p up conversion. A blue ray is a possibilty- but not for another year or two until the price is realistic.

Yes John you are correct, in a year or so all 720p plasma sets will be phased out and all present owners of 720p plasma sets will have to deliver the sets to a large warehouse in your area being set up by a new State Agency, or provide concrete proof that you have destroyed the TV. A 12" x 12" piece of the glass panel should be enough proof. Failure to adhere to the new rules will get you a fine of $350.00, and you will only be allowed to own one 27" CRT in your home with the signal being provided by a roof antenna.

davidag02 02-22-08, 02:00 PM I think 1080p is definately on it's way out the door. In 2 years, I doubt there will be any 720 models available.
Wether or not you get a 1080p set now though should be almost totally determined by how far you plan to sit from your TV, and how big of a screen you want. Use this chart as a guideline:

flood222 02-22-08, 03:42 PM OOoooo Carlton Bale's chart for the average consumer makes another appearance! Sweet.
I'd like to point out that in his blog he also mentions how 1080p makes a difference and is noticeable to those who care. I'd like to continue with that. DVDs look pretty good on my 700U, almost as good as 720. 1080 content looks better than 720. It is noticeable.
Aerocraft67 02-22-08, 06:14 PM The 50PZ80U (1080p) costs about 50% more than the 50PX80U (720p). I don't think the resolution alone is worth the premium, unless you're sitting close enough to really appreciate it. You're talking about viewing from the kitchen so 720p may make sense for you. Although, you do get 33% more contrast ratio with the PZ80 vs. PX80, and 50% higher CR if you jump up to the PZ85U (then the price premium pushes 60% over the PX80). The story is similar for the 2007 models. I'd want to understand and experience those differences better before paying the premium. Most of the aficionados on the Panasonic threads are interested in the forthcoming 800 series, which has even more specification improvements that transcend resolution--at a much higher price, of course.

I think you mean 720p is on it's way out.
ron2368 02-23-08, 08:56 PM If I only watch sd or hdtv and and my srceen size vs distance is right at the 720/1080 line will I get a better picture with a pana z8 vs an x8? I just need a 42 inch tv and do not want larger that that and if I am 8 to 9 feet away will I notice a better picture.
enysteez 02-23-08, 09:23 PM Dare I say that with a 42" set you dont need 1080p. That being said I own a 42PZ77U & I wanted 1080p for 2 reasons: #1 I HATE SDE & #2 when I play video games I tend to sit closer than my normal viewing distance form the couch so I really notice the difference @ roughly 6' away. My father has a 42" Phillips Ambilight Plasma 720p & though the picture is still good(the 1st HD set I have experience with), there is a big difference with my picture & his. Also, 1080p/i is way better looking then 720p. CBS HD is probably the best lookign channel in particular with their NFL broadcasts & the picture blows FOX & ESPN away in comparison so IMO it cant be THAT hard to tell the difference between the 2 resolutions as some claim.
