View Full Version : Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Cysquatch 02-22-08, 10:41 AM Not much talk about this and its coming in next month! After seeing the videos and 1up's preview, it looks like we may have a sleeper hit on our hands. Let's hope a demo comes soon.
The following preview is the xbox version but its supposedly the same as the ps3 version...

Scarier than Resident Evil 5?
by: Gillen McAllister 22/02/2008
It starts, rather bizarrely, with the most beautiful sight in videogames, yet come the demo’s closing, jolts with an image that violates the retinas long after you turn off your console. Designing realistic weather conditions is the new frontier for videogames, yet the simplicity of snowflakes floating down in the night sky, contrasting against the backdrop of a grimy alleyway, mesmerises us.
The sound of muttering to one side pulls the lead character to his feet. Ethan Thomas is sleeping rough in a back alley, arm bandages caked with blood and dirt, fellow homeless people his only source of companionship.
Thomas’ new world is one of violence, death and misery… and sadly always a hand-grasp away from beauty. It’s like watching It’s a Wonderful Life, minus the happy ending.
Violence is the only thing burning bright in Ethan’s life – and is the fuel that drives the gameplay. Interactive cut-scenes demand Thomas’ response and you can reply in one of two ways when the button prompt flashes up on screen: if you ignore it the dialogue flows normally, while tapping said button generates a more ‘vigorous’ response, such as giving the finger, offering a challenge or, in this case, pushing the bum aside to kick open a locked gateway.
Melee combat is emphasised more than ever, rebalanced since the game’s predecessor Criminal Origins. Left and Right triggers serve as left and right fist respectively; pull them together to block, or time your taps for a chain combo. Sinking your fist into an opponent’s face feels as satisfying as Fight Night and the environmental kills (pulling LT and RT when they’re on their knees) drives their head into televisions, toilets and whatever other household objects are at hand. Jason Bourne eat your heart out.
The majority of weapons are secondary, complementing melee attacks: shotguns and pistols, for example, only pack enough bullets for a handful of shots. Each has an identical stat list split across damage, speed, reach and condition. The last is perhaps most important as everything has a breaking point – at most, you only get a handful of swings before your custom club is unusable.
Conservation is important: the enemies, from skeletal crazies to the tar-covered ‘Influenced’, are brutally strong and can pick up and use objects against you. Strikes need to be well timed – a single whack across the back of the neck finishes the fight immediately.
And if you come face-to-face with a pack of killers, you need to weigh up your options fast. Running away and then picking them off one by one is the best policy.
Our time with the game raised concerns with the balance between fighting and investigating. The original was about building tension, with the occasional stab of hand-to-hand combat. Bloodshot’s opening section suggests a more action-orientated adventure, the type of which we’ve seen countless times before.
In addition, the enemy difficulty swings wildly from tough to stupidly hard. Tar creatures explode with one punch, but appear in fast-moving swarms that make it hard to combat. We died far too many times before our ‘run and hide’ policy came into play. Also, sticking a gun-toting criminal at the end of a tight corridor, armed with one-hit-kill bullets, is frustrating rather than challenging. However we were assured by Sega that Monolith is currently balancing the game out, highlighting new additions, such as health packs and strategically placed brick piles, since they last demoed it.
Cut-scenes were also heavily work-in-progress, so the story is currently wreathed in mystery. We do know that Thomas is recruited to the Special Crimes Unit to investigate a new spate of murders, which may have something to do with the Serial Killer X investigation that ended Ethan’s FBI career.
The opening scene in the alley has Ethan chasing Malcolm Vanhorn, uncle to Leland Vanhorn, the original Serial Killer X. The black tar that coats Malcolm’s face seems to be the cause for the civil unrest, as it starts appearing extensively on other homeless people and on the city’s streets. Whatever it is, it’s turning people murderous, forcing the police to implement a city-wide curfew.
The closing act sees you stumble onto a scene reminiscent of a Fincher or Roth movie. A body lies mutilated and crucified to the floor, the bloody instruments of murder placed carefully on a table nearby. Written in three-foot-high letters across one wall are the words: ‘My eyes have seen the glory’. Our eyes have seen it too, in all its filthy, horrific detail. Like its predecessor, Bloodshot aims a nightmare-steeped bullet for the mind’s eye, and this time it looks likely to hit dead centre.
DESCEND THE NIGHT
The best way to play Bloodshot, according to Monolith, is to turn down off the lights, crank up the sound and kick some ass. It might have added ‘bring the toilet roll’, too. Even in the office there were a handful of potential brown trouser moments – the game’s subtle lighting effects are enough to set you on edge when mixed with the taut music score. Oh, and the groans and screams from somewhere nearby doesn’t help. Bloody 5.1 surround sound.
CREEPING DEATH
Looks like the bizarre creatures we saw in our previous demo aren’t a by-product of Ethan’s dementia. It’s a city-wide problem much like the Infected in the movie 28 Days Later. Here the ‘Influenced’ seem to come from contact with the black tar that’s coating the city. Imagine the ooze from Ghostbusters II – except this is cured with a pipe to the face, not a hug and a jolly sing-a-long.
THE BLACKENING
Months sleeping on the streets have given Thomas a gutter-mouth and the grit to match. Often the game gives you the choice of two different responses to situations: if you select to tap A, for example, before the on-screen timer runs out, a finger, oath, or push will be directed at whoever you’re talking to.
WHODUNNIT? HOWDUNNIT?
After Criminal Origins’ laughably simple crime-solving, Bloodshot employs a more in-depth mechanic, wherein you have to work out who the victim is and how they died.
For example, the first crime scene we came across was a body lying in a pool of blood. Our liaison back at SCU sets us three tasks – identify the body, find the cause of death and determine if the body has been moved. Each task needs three clues to ascertain an answer, pooled from examination of certain areas and selection of the best variables.
Examining the body, we found a wound in the back, and selected ‘bullet wound’ from a row of possible options. Blood was running out from the wound, so we chose ‘exit wound’. Finally we examined the blood, highlighting ‘lots of’. With these three in the pot SCU ascertained the quite obvious theory that the victim was killed by gunfire. Later investigations promise to be a lot more difficult…
CONDEMN YOUR FRIENDS
Criminal Origins wasn’t, Bloodshot is. Monolith has uncovered the four multiplayer modes you’ll be getting your teeth into come March.
Crime Scene has the most potential currently, reminiscent of Splinter Cell’s Mercs Vs Spies multiplayer. It divides players into SCU and Influenced, with the former trying to find clues at the scene of a crime. The latter has to stop them solving the case by hiding or moving evidence, or killing the investigators.
The oddly named Bum Rush isn’t a poor-taste mini-game after eating a dodgy kebab. It’s SCU versus Influenced again, much like Halo’s Infection game type. SCU are armed with limited amounts of powerful weaponry, and have to survive three minutes against a horde of Influenced. No mention on whether if you kill a SCU, they return as Influenced, though.
The last two modes are classic Team and Solo deathmatches. It’s for up to eight players, with weapons dotted around each level to use to make sure you’re the last one standing.
dbburns 02-22-08, 11:42 AM I am very much looking forward to this game. The first was a bit under-appreciated, if you ask me. I replayed it this past weekend in anticipation of the sequel. Just as scary the second time through, and I played it during the daytime. :O Much more spooky in the dark, like this article says. Can't wait.
MPresseau 02-22-08, 01:24 PM Please, let it be longer than the original. Please.
patsrockon 02-22-08, 03:38 PM Unoriginal question of the day, will they look equal on both consoles? I want to get PS3 versions of games whenever possible as long as the ports are on equal footing.

I'm sure they will be nearly identical.
Here's last Friday's episode of the 1up Show. They talk quite a bit about Condemned at the 17:05 min mark. Looks incredible. Looks freaking scary.

There's also an option for a larger format on the same page.
Dungwader 02-22-08, 07:13 PM I liked the first one. It had a good atmosphere. This one looks intense.

german gamespot got the first official review of the final build of the game. they say textures are identical, everything looks the same. only difference, ps3 has uncompressed audio! thats an automatic sale for me. the fact that this isnt a gimped version. plus after playing the first one, it really does have an incredible atmosphere plus tension moments. to experience that in uncompressed is going to be awesome, IMO.

Weird. That list is missing one single player achievement (SKX) and all of the multiplayer achievements from the 360 version. I wonder if it's just an incomplete list.
*EDIT*
Read the 360 list wrong. SKX is a multiplayer achievement, and a couple of the above list are as well. I'm guessing it's just an incomplete list, as it's missing 14 of the achievements from the 360 version.
jasonstiller 03-07-08, 03:55 PM Uncompressed Audio?!?! Fantastic, guess this will be the 1st multiplatform game I buy on the PS3!
Cysquatch 03-11-08, 12:59 PM Looks like i'll be heading to the XBOX forums for player reviews of the game. PS3 version was pushed back week (3/18) due to duplication issues.
Muttley2007 03-19-08, 04:04 PM Thought i would resurrect this thread as the game is released today i beleive?
If anyone managed to bag a copy please let me know your opinions. I saw the 360 version got a score of 8.5 on IGN. I wondered if the PS3 port was better/worse??
Cheers :-)
I am looking forward to this game too. I was hoping it would be out in stores today but it looks like it will be tomorrow. I am vacillating between this and R6 Vegas 2 but something tells me I will like Condemned 2 more. Hopefully it will be as atmospheric as Bioshock but that is setting the bar pretty high.
confidenceman 03-19-08, 04:40 PM I know this isn't quite the answer you were looking for, but I've been playing this on the 360 for the past few days and loving it.
I've run into some framerate issues here and there, but so long as the PS3 version can at least match that, it should be a definite play. And if the rumors of uncompressed audio for the PS3 are true, I may have to trade in my 360 version and finish my playthrough on PS3!
It improves on the first game in nearly every way imaginable (and in some ways you didn't imagine). The combat is now a mash-up of Oblivion's close-quarters melee style and Uncharted's timed melee combat. The forensic/detective work is awesome and actually matters this time around.
It doesn't have the scare-a-minute approach of the first Condemned, but it has a much creepier vibe that follows you into the real world. Very, very cool game.

is there coop split screen or online?
confidenceman 03-19-08, 10:52 PM is there coop split screen or online?Pretty basic online matches. Reminds me of a much simpler Splinter Cell online (one side investigates, the other kills). Fun enough. But the focus is definitely the single player experience.
I picked it up today and have a big problem with audio dropping in and out. The ps3 is hooked up to my tuner via optical and I see it loose the audio signal quite frequently. This is the first time I have experienced this with a ps3 game. Anyone else?
Looks like I am not the only one, http://boards2.sega.com/sega_board/viewtopic.php?p=2127271#2127271
confidenceman 03-20-08, 11:23 PM If it's any consolation, I've also been getting pretty regular audio dropouts on the 360 version (as well as framerate problems). Nothing game-breaking, but it can get annoying.
GW-SMOkeY 03-20-08, 11:31 PM BB still does not cary the game or has record of it ...
Cysquatch 03-20-08, 11:33 PM Going to play the demo as soon as I get home. I've been looking forward to this for awhile now. Sounds like it won't disappoint. Gamestop was saying it was out tomorrow. Didn't realize it hit shelves today. I actually may stop by wal-mart on the way home.
EDIT: Walmart doesn't have it. Looks like I'll just play the demo until gamefly ships it. At least i'll be saving 20 bucks for being patient.
SunnyUK 03-20-08, 11:36 PM The demo is good, finally a game that scared me for a few moments... :)
like.no.other. 03-21-08, 12:23 AM Wow, this is the best first person boxing game ever!
confidenceman 03-21-08, 01:52 AM Wow, this is the best first person boxing game ever!Lol. Just wait until you see later levels. This game has just about every type of close quarters combat you can imagine.
this game is creepy! i love it.
avgjoemomma 03-21-08, 01:14 PM Tried the demo out, but the bobbing motion plus blur makes me a bit disoriented while playing. First game to do so.
Cysquatch 03-21-08, 01:24 PM Having not played the original game, I loved the demo. Those lil' oily bastards reminded my of my days in Ravenholm.
I'll be keeping this rental (once it gets here).

cooper1010 03-22-08, 09:59 AM Wow, this is the best first person boxing game ever!
1st person! more like 3/4 person. i feel like i'm looking through a paper towel roll. maybe that's all the hours in warhawk, but i don't remember r:fom feeling this cramped.
The audio cutting out appears to not be as bad once you get past the first level and I am enjoying this game but there are some very basic things it gets wrong. The most glaring problem is that sometimes you can step over a knee high obstacle and sometimes you can't. I understand that they are trying to move you along a certain path but have some consistency. It is 2008, invisible walls should be a thing of the past.
Swift Mojo Hand 03-22-08, 05:19 PM I am surprised no one has mentioned the exlecent use of bass in this game. It hums along in a deep droan giving you an impending since of deranged dread. Very cool. Turn up your subwoofer for this game.

The first Condemned game was even more cramped feeling because your character moved so slow and turned his head even slower. Add in the flashlight's even narrower field of vision, and you've got some serious tunnel vision going on. That's part of what made the first game so freaky.

The worst framerate issues and sound dropouts happen in the first few levels. After that, it's all pretty smooth.
Unfortunately, the game itself kinda sucks after the first handful of levels. Color me disappointed... :(
I also had some funny collision moments. There was one doorway I couldn't get through because a briefcase was jammed in the way. Took me a while to even see what was keeping me from going through.
biomechanoid999 03-24-08, 07:27 PM Glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing audio cutting out on the 360 version. I'm only at the hotel area, but I've noticed a number of instances of it happening. It seems to happen particularly when I'm fighting a number of guys. And the audio doesn't just cut out...it's like my receiver actually loses the signal for a split second. Normally, when it's playing back 5.1 audio, there's a little blue light, but at random times in this game, the light will go off for a split second then come back on and the receiver display will flash that it's playing back a 5.1 signal. Weird...

Weird...I've started to see the issue reported in reviews now, too, so I know I'm not insane. But, yeah, it's not just a "hitch" in the audio; it full on drops the signal for a second. I've gotten this in a few other 360 games, too. This is the first game I've heard of it happening in on the PS3, though.
But like I said, the issue gets much less frequent as the game goes on. It's really bad in the first three levels or so.
Cysquatch 03-25-08, 02:20 AM got the game today from gamefly. its a keeper for 42 bucks. I did, however, have some controller issues. For some odd reason, R2 was not working in game with any of my controllers. I was going nuts trying to throw a weapon. It just wasn't happening. I finally had to shut the PS3 completely down and reboot to get it to work. So needless to say, i'm at the ladder where you have to throw an item at it to get it to fall. Looking forward for more bum rushin'.
The game is so dark, that i have to turn off all the lights just to see. I can see this game getting to you after a long session. I actually got queasy climbing a ladder. That was a first.
Cysquatch 03-26-08, 05:37 PM Liking the game ALOT after playing through the first couple missions. I'm just about to enter the doll factory.
One creepy moment I need to mention. Creepy enough to get my son out of bed to come see. And yes, I restarted the level to show him. lol.
SPOILER FOLLOWS................highlight with mouse to read....It in white so I apologize if you still see it! =)
In the building after the commuter rails, I was trudging through different rooms and see this figure standing erect about 3 rooms down. I chalked it up to another crack smoking bum I'd have to eventually kill. As I got closer, I noticed it was a mannequin. I walked up to him and lights flashed and i think I heard "you are dead". No biggie. I go to turn around, BAM, 7 or 8 mannequins standing right where I previous entered. That made me jump. Very twilight zone-like. I then go out the side door and turn around, more mannequins now blocking re-entry. With the surround going and lights off, it was f'n creepy.

The way to do this is to enclose the text in spoiler tags, that is [ SPOILER ] and [ /SPOILER ] (without the spaces). I did this in my quote of your post. When you do it this way the forum software fixes it for whatever color scheme the user is using.
As for the creepy moment, it's a shame they're recycling exact situations from the first game. This very thing happens in the extremely creepy department store level of Condemned. It worked very well there, also. I haven't played Condemned 2, yet, but I look forward to it eventually. Not sure I'm going to pay full retail for it, though.
Cysquatch 03-26-08, 05:51 PM Fixed! Thanks ferrisg!
I bought it from Target online with some gift cards...dying with anticipation waiting for it to arrive....

That mannequin scene (and a few others) are recycled from the first Condemned. There are some great new scenes (the doll factory level is a real highlight and the dream-sequences are pretty awesome), but overall it's got too much shooting and elaborate combo punching to be very scary.
I have to agree, definitely worth a rent but not a buy. There were several occasions where it had a Bioshock kind of feel (Magic Man) but fell a bit flat and the audio drop outs really killed the immersion for me. Added to Goozex last night after I finished the game, had a buyer by this morning, mailed it off, hello 1000 Goozex points. Now only 97 more turns for the Orange Box....waaaa.

Me too, that's what makes it even harder for me. I really had high hopes for this game. Also, I have a fundamental problem with buying the Orange Box at retail since I already own Half Life 2 and Episode 1 on the PC.
DaGamePimp 03-29-08, 07:22 PM So the audio popping that is in the PSN demo is also in the full PS3 game ... that's too bad . My speakers were popping like crazy with this demo so I stopped playing and deleted it . I rented the 360 version instead and have not noticed any audio issues within the first 15-20 minutes .

I've put a few hours into this game with 5.1 surround with zero popping or cutting out.
Asshandler 03-30-08, 12:41 AM The audio issues seem to be related to using optical for your connection.
I've been playign through the game and really enjoying it. To fix the audio dropouts, go into the XMB and disable DD 5.1 and DTS, so the game outputs in stereo with no problems.
DaGamePimp 03-30-08, 06:38 AM Hmmm ... my PS3 is connected via HDMI and the popping in the demo was HORRIBLE from all 7 speakers (did not seem to come out of the sub at all) , it was so strong that I actually thought it was part of the games audio at first . So I guess it's not just people using optical that are having audio issues (but then again this was only with the demo and not the full game) . I was kind of bothered though becuase I had heard mention that this game was using uncompressed 7.1 for the PS3 version (not sure if that is true or not , I read it somewhere on the web) .

I'm borrowing the game from a friend of mine and the audio dropouts are a bit distracting. I'm also using an optical cable from my PS3 to my receiver and I see the same problem with my light fade off for DD on my receiver then come back on a split second later. Overall though I'll put up with that since this game is just fun to play. I may have to pick this game up after I get the new controller. I miss the rumble for the hand to hand combat.
This game sure does make me jumpy though. This series has some of the best background noises from my rear speakers that I have heard in a game. I wish it was May now since I am getting a new receiver and speakers then.
Sinistar83 04-07-08, 09:17 PM Hmm yeah I've tried the demo and am using 5.1 with optical cable and the sound kept cutting out.. I thought it was just me.. Sad to hear it's in the full version.. I will wait until.they patch the game until I play the full version.
Until then, I'll go back and play the original on the PC. :)
JetJockey1 04-08-08, 12:49 PM Playing the demo with 5.1 through optical and the audio dropouts are continuous and the game is unplayable.
What company would release a demo and worse a whole game that is this flawed, what a piece of junk, they should be ashamed of themselves.

Unplayable? Hardly.
While it may be an annoying distraction, I made my way through the entire game just fine.
It's not a game-breaking bug, but it's certainly an bothersome one that should have been fixed before release. How something like it could slip through QA is beyond me.
The game is still great though, I enjoyed it a lot right to the very end.
Big Brad 04-08-08, 03:11 PM As others have said, the audio dropouts lessen the further you progress in the game. Once I got to the museum I experienced maybe one dropout the entire level.

Arutha_conDoin 04-08-08, 08:33 PM The thing with the dropout is that it almost makes the game more creepy. Lets face it the main character is pretty disturbed and having the audio drop out almost fits the character. Just finished the Doll Factory level those damn thing give me the creeps.
Sinistar83 04-26-08, 01:04 PM Finally got this from gamefly and the audio pop outs still appear in the full version. :(
I had to turn on subtitles in the game to hear what was going on. I'll just return it and wait unttil the patch comes out
I got past the doll factory level -though.. good stuff. lol I love when you use the doll and "block" with it.
stevesns69 05-04-08, 03:30 AM I wish I had seen this thread before I bought this game!! I just got this tonight. The audio dropouts are so annoying. I'm curious if this can even be fixed with a patch like other games in the past? Has anyone contacted Sega or WB or whoever wants to take credit for this fiasco? I'm going to try to contact somebody. Probably get the run around like Fox with their defective dts HDMA audio on the Die Hard 2 Blu-ray. I liked the first one too, so the blind buy wasn't completely blind. I bought the PS3 version expecting lossless audio, but I'm showing DD 5.1. I will carry on however, like a good consumer and wait for any possible fix and play some music to overshadow the dropouts. Shouldn't say it, but in game custom music might help some for this game.
