Between the 40 and 80 GB PS3s.

Aside from the capacity, the only external diference between the two is the amounts of USB ports. One as 2 the other as 4.

The 80 GB machine can play the PS2 games. Depending on who you talk to, the number varies from 75% to 90% of PS2 games that can be played on the PS3. Someone told me with the latest software upgrade that number jumps to 100%. What is the truth on this subject?

Now my main concern is BR movies. I`m told the PS3 is a pretty decent BR movie player but what I need to know is the following...

Is there any difference in video quality in playing movies between the 40Gb and 80Gb machine?

What is this version 2.0 I keep hearing about for BR players? I hear that only the PS3 is going to have this 2.0 version at first and other BR players are going to get it later.

I hear the 80 Gb player runs hotter than the 40Gb player. Is this a concern?

Finally I have a PS2 so I could keep it and connect it via component cables to my PJ.

TIA,

Mike

If you still have your PS then get the 40. They are widely regarded as being the quietest version yet, and the movie playback will be identical between the two. As far as BR 2.0 goes, the main rason to buy the PS3 vs. a stand alone player is that the PS is upgradable because of the internet connectivity and the HDD. Get the 40, IMO.

the 80 will play most ps2 games but not all right now. there are rumors that sony will come up with a way to make it 100% compatible, but those are only rumors at this point.

no difference. they run the same blu ray software using the same hardware. no difference at all.

it has to do with the ability to access extras. the ps3 has everything required to be profile 2.0 compatible, sony just has to release the software to do it, and they've made it clear that that will happen. Other players will get it too, but many early stand alone blu ray players lack some of the hardware necessary to play profile 2.0 extras. basically, if you get a ps3 of any capacity, you won't have to worry about it.

all ps3's generate a significant amount of heat. some people claim one version is cooler than another, but there's some variation between individual units so it's hard to say if one version is ALWAYS going to be cooler than another . . . but, in general, the 40's do seem to be a bit cooler . . . .

Thanks guys it looks like the 40Gb player is good enough for me.

I'll just hook up my PS2 into the PJ's component input and be done with that.

if you ever want to play rockband you will prolly need the 80g. (USB ports)

I would get the 80. The ps2 games look much better upscaled on the ps3. It is not 100%, but it is better then the 40 by a long shot. Or wait a while for the 120gb with rumble feature controllers that are rumored soon.

Oh sh!t!

Now you just through a monkey ranch into the equation.

I forgot about the upscaling. Do you really see that much difference in playing the PS2 games on a PS3 versus the PS2 games on the PS2?

I'll be using the PS3 new Epson 1080UB with a 96 inch screen minimum.

Or just pick up a $10 usb hub from Walmart to use with the 40gb. That's what I did with my 40gb so now I have 6 ports instead of the usual 2. More than I need to play Rock Band.

If I'm not mistaken that's really unnecessary. Rockband has two wired peripherals hence 2 usbs. The 360 has a wired guitar, which is why it needs a hub.

Each instrument requires a USB.

The guitar may be wireless, but it uses a dongle that plugs into one of the USB ports.

So drums, two guitars, and a mic will require four USB ports.
