I am contemplating getting a PS3 40 GB Unit. Will this unit do 1080p through component cables?
The reason I ask is I have an earlier 42 inch westinghouse that has trouble getting a 1080p signal through HDMI due to a defect.
Thanks!

I think it depends on your tv. I haven't had a PS3 for long, and I'm using HDMI now, but my Samsung would accept 1080p through component with my 360, while my old TV wouldn't do that.
Of course, that 1080p was only with games, it still downgraded to 720 through component with movies because of the HDCP. If you run component cables, it won't be digital and won't upconvert regular DVDs I don't think.
I'm not sure if the Blu-ray discs will play in 1080p over component or not, I think not, but I haven't tried.
Hope that helps.

My TV can do 1080p on component... but I was worried about the blu-ray movies not being able to play 1080p via component, due to HDCP.
Can anyone confirm?

If your tv can do 1080p on component, then the tv will display 1080p. If you're asking if the ps3 will output 1080p, that's a different story.
The ps3 will output 1080p over component for blu ray movies 100% of the time.
The ps3 will output 1080p over component for games as often as the game supports 1080 resolutions. (Not all games allow for 1080i/p)
The ps3 will never output standard def dvds in 1080 over component. This is where the HDCP comes in.
Hope this answers your question.

Are you sure? I was under the impression the BR movies run at a max of 1080i over component:confused:

You're impression is correct.
Component:
BD Playback: up to 1080i*
DVD Playback: up to 480p
Games: up to 1080p
Everything Else (XMB, etc): up to 1080p
And yes, HDCP is responsible for 1080i max for BD playback. And the DVD Forum's HDCP compliant device and display requirement for up scaling limits DVD playback through component.
PS3 User Manual: (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/videooutput.html)
Copyright-protected Blu-ray video discs can only output at 1080p using an HDMI cable connected to a device that is compatible with the HDCP standard.
*I guess I should clarify as the above statement does, Copy Protected BDs will only playback at 1080i. Home made BDs should playback at 1080p through component, IIRC.
