Holodeck, here we come!

We've got a similar system here in ABQ at the Air Force base, but not quite that dramatic.

so basically that should be the closest you can get to a holodeck!

hmmm!! I would love to experience it.

I want to make a bigger one - like IMAX on all sides!

I wonder how (or if) the sound is?

Holodeck, here we come!
John,

Here's an article from the October 2000 issue of LLNL's "Science and Technology Review":

https://www.llnl.gov/str/Quinn.html

It shows the "powerwall" that we have at work; which has been significantly upgraded
since Oct 2000 with higher definition projectors and more powerful graphics engines...

..and we do call it the "Holodeck".

WOW!

That looks great!!! :D

Very much like my Cine Gamma design in a conference room format (please see my website).:p

What technology and resolution are you achieving these days?

Looks pretty similar to the one here. They did a presentation on it to the HD users group but didn't exactly invite us over for movies and popcorn ;)

It would be fun to do......with someone else's money, anyway!

uhhh.....yeah.........

I meant that conceptually, the idea of having an extremely high resolution display large enough to fill an entire wall of a home or office boardroom is very appealing, particularly when featured in a rear projection design.

Certainly, I have rarely seen this implementation taken to its logical conclusion as a particular type of home theater. And it certainly should be more often, as this would allow for viewing in daylight or high ambient lighting conditions using a high contrast laboratory grade RP screen.

And therefore be a more usable, highest possible quality display system easily at home in a large living room, kitchen, bedroom, or exercise facility, just to begin with.

to do this in a home tied with 4K footage of great places would present a complete redefinition of the term Picture window. And if one had the money, would be the most fantastic family room/entertaining room one could imagine.

Why isn't Cinemax and/or Goldmun doing this?????:D

Cineramax did something like that, at the far more modest scale we are accustomed to seeing from him;-). Dizzman, get the NHK developed 8K camera to provide live footage.

here is a picture from a show ise 2007 about a good year ago
that show a 3d set up rptv with 2 sony 4k pr.

i only need two 4k pr. not 24 to be satisfied:)

the picture look not good that time.
rptv 3d with polarizer have very bad gosting.
max. extinction factor is "much less" than 100:1 and front pr. with a silver screen can go up to 170:1 if you use the right good glas polarizer.
that is even worse when you have to use (sony 4k need it for 3d) circular polarizer.
linear polarizer are much better but the sony cant use them.
a option is invitec / dolby 3d filters with very good extinction but other problems.

btw this a a 3 d picture.
if you have a red/cyan eyeglasses you can see it in 3d but the 3d effect is not the best
so i add a other picture as well where the d3 effect is much better.

for some reason the color was now different to the original so the
extinction is also very bad on both pictures but you can try it out.

Unless you are subject to motion sickness...

I toured that setup at an Alum event and it made me sick as a dog, otherwise it was pretty cool.

yes i am.

lost my balance organ right together with hearing 7 months ago and since then i have more or less giddiness problems even without such a set up.

sometimes i have problems with my big 7m screen if there is much
action but it will get better.

Hmm, I thought I had picked up a pair of such glasses (cardboard +foil freebies), so I just went to look for them, but the ones Sony and Holovis handed out at ISE 2007 are just shades, no red/green filters, so these don't work:-(.

Using polarized light devices, such as LCD or LCoS projectors why not use two projectors with a polarization off-set between the two projectors? Would balance out the 50% ligt-loss associated with using LCD panels in the first place, as well as the light loss from the 3D polarisation filters, that would be done away with.
