The Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular in HDTV on CBS
Hosted by Drew Carey
Friday 8pm ET

PRICE Returns To Prime Time With Six New Million Dollar Spectaculars

THE PRICE IS RIGHT, hosted by Drew Carey, returns to prime time with six new MILLION DOLLAR SPECTACULAR SPECIALS to be broadcast on Fridays, beginning February 22 (8:00-9:00 pm, et/pt) on the CBS Television Network. These will be the first primetime specials to be broadcast since Carey took hosting reins from former host Bob Barker.

There are two ways to win a million. One is the “Million Dollar Game”, where if you play a perfect game during that event you get $1,000,000. Also, the other way is through the Showcases. If you come within $1,000, it’s declared a double showcase win, and you also get $1,000,000.

I believe this is the first primetime game show available in HDTV.

TPIR-HD have about as much luck giving away the $1 million as Howie does on DOND, and he has 13 cases (out of the 26) with that amount in them. :D

Is it me or does it look like CBS borrowed FOX's 16x9 SD cameras for this?

The funky old TPIR set looks great in HD. The "lightbulb" border at the beginning not so great.

Yeah, they messed up.

I hate it when this happens. It's the third time for me (the other times it was WFXT Fox 25) where an HD broadcast channel was showing the SD feed of something I know was available in HD.

Could this mark the beginning of HD for the daytime show? If they can do it now..why not the daytime? Also, Drew or anyone else, I think HD is the only thing that COULD save TPIR. When the senior viewers all pass on. Who does that leave? The HD generation.

Drew Carey is terrible, bring back Bob!

He's not as bad as I thought he'd be; at least he's not constantly trying to crack jokes and do his "act".

Still, there's nobody left like Bob, with his folksy, "we're right in your living rooms, America!" camera interaction. That's a relic of 1950s TV and nobody does it like that anymore.

nickdawg

Is this in true 5.1? On WOIO/Cleveland it sounds like crap "fake surround" upconverted.

I know, its really a shame too. When you grow up accustomed to a certain TV personality its really hard to get used to a new guy. Drew just seems a little awkward and has almost no emotion.

I'm probably being too critical but, thats just how I feel.

Fremantle produces alot of shows, most in SD. Fremantle bought Mark Godson Productions a number of years ago, the longtime producer of TPIR.

Wow, what a show. The end was odd though. While the guy won the showcase AND 1 Million Dollars, it ended so quick as if it were common for someone to will that much money on game shows.

And, did anyone catch that cutie in the tight tight red shirt. It was chilly in there. Any screenshots. :D

The Price is Right cameras have had "HD" on the side of them for a long time now... even before Bob Barker left. It seems like they upgraded the cameras a while ago, but never upgraded the rest of their dated equipment until now. It would greatly surprise me if they didn't broadcast in HD from now on, since they have the capability and the HD-ready set with new carpet and paint. ;)

I doubt the daytime show would be in HD this Monday. Aren't the daytime shows sometimes taped months in advance? Is the nighttime show taped as far in advanced as the daytime show? Anyway, I doubt it would line up perfectly for this Monday, unless they had previous episodes ready to go in HD for the daytime, and choose not to broadcast in it.

Watched it last night (2/22) on KPIX-DT. Looked real nice in 1080i. Funny though, other than a different host and announcer, the show hasn't changed much in over 30 years. And a very lucky man guessed the price of his showcase within $1000 of MSRP and won $1M.

I'm not sure they updated anything else at all. I'm wagering they didn't use their regular control room for this show. They could have even used a mobile unit.

I'm pretty sure that, come Monday, and for some time after, it will be back to SD.

That is the same studio that HBO uses for Real Time with Bill Maher which is now in HD. Would HBO also use a mobile control unit too?

I think this is probably the best explanation for why HD daytime TPIR is still a few months off.

The Bob Barker Studio is producing Real Time with Bill Maher in HD. I seriously doubt CBS rolled in a mobile unit just to do a one-off TPIR in HD.

I don't think so. Unless something has changed without my hearing about it, the control room is still SD. I don't think they used their regular facilities for the primetime special. Remember, the special would also have to be edited.

Can you explain to a noob like me exactly what that means? Since getting my HD D* a couple weeks ago, one of the shows that I was most impressed with (Besides LOST) for picture quality has been the Tonight Show. The couple times that I saw the monologue, I was very impressed by what I was seeing. The colors seemed much more rich and the depth of the image seemed very impressive to most of the other HD stuff I see.

In HD the purpose is often to minimize unflattering details which in the case of this show may include the set as well as the host. Images can also be softened unintentionally from processes such as encoding.

Electronic filters can also be used to sharpen an image and is more commonly called detail enhancement and aperature correction.

I saw the first show with Carey and thought he was nervous and was really off. When I was out sick a few weeks ago, I caught it again and thought he was much improved. As someone said earlier, these hosts that we loved such as Barker, Cullen, Rayburn, Kennedy, Convey, and others are a thing of the past. The other thing you need to realize is you're not seeing the first year of the first game show Bob Barker hosted, either.

Hosts grow into their shows with time; I remember watching Wheel of Fortune in the early days and Pat and Vanna didn't click perfectly from day one, either.
