The Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular in HDTV on CBS
Hosted by Drew Carey
Friday 8pm ET
PRICE Returns To Prime Time With Six New Million Dollar Spectaculars
THE PRICE IS RIGHT, hosted by Drew Carey, returns to prime time with six new MILLION DOLLAR SPECTACULAR SPECIALS to be broadcast on Fridays, beginning February 22 (8:00-9:00 pm, et/pt) on the CBS Television Network. These will be the first primetime specials to be broadcast since Carey took hosting reins from former host Bob Barker.
There are two ways to win a million. One is the “Million Dollar Game”, where if you play a perfect game during that event you get $1,000,000. Also, the other way is through the Showcases. If you come within $1,000, it’s declared a double showcase win, and you also get $1,000,000.
I believe this is the first primetime game show available in HDTV.
sansri88 02-22-08, 06:18 PM Yahooo! Can't wait for this tonight...
humdinger70 02-22-08, 06:29 PM TPIR-HD have about as much luck giving away the $1 million as Howie does on DOND, and he has 13 cases (out of the 26) with that amount in them. :D
Confetti and HDTV don't mix well.
exit670 02-22-08, 08:03 PM Now THAT was some incredible macroblocking.
Well the PQ is nothing to write home about. On D* from Atlanta.
Nice win for the vette!
No HD here- WBZ Boston, atleast not at the first commercial break!
StudioTech 02-22-08, 08:13 PM Watching OTA on WCBS-DT NYC
Is it me or does it look like CBS borrowed FOX's 16x9 SD cameras for this?
nickdawg 02-22-08, 08:15 PM The funky old TPIR set looks great in HD. The "lightbulb" border at the beginning not so great.
chad473 02-22-08, 08:20 PM looks great so long as the camera or anyone on it doesn't move.
Andy Anonymous 02-22-08, 08:26 PM No HD here- WBZ Boston, atleast not at the first commercial break!
Yeah, they messed up.
I hate it when this happens. It's the third time for me (the other times it was WFXT Fox 25) where an HD broadcast channel was showing the SD feed of something I know was available in HD.
watsonte 02-22-08, 08:28 PM Drew Carey is terrible, bring back Bob!
Marcus Carr 02-22-08, 08:30 PM Looks good except for some macroblocking.
Drew gorges!
mp3trojan 02-22-08, 08:30 PM Could this mark the beginning of HD for the daytime show? If they can do it now..why not the daytime? Also, Drew or anyone else, I think HD is the only thing that COULD save TPIR. When the senior viewers all pass on. Who does that leave? The HD generation.
Andy Anonymous 02-22-08, 08:31 PM Drew Carey is terrible, bring back Bob!
He's not as bad as I thought he'd be; at least he's not constantly trying to crack jokes and do his "act".
Still, there's nobody left like Bob, with his folksy, "we're right in your living rooms, America!" camera interaction. That's a relic of 1950s TV and nobody does it like that anymore.
nickdawg 02-22-08, 08:34 PM Is this in true 5.1? On WOIO/Cleveland it sounds like crap "fake surround" upconverted.
watsonte 02-22-08, 08:37 PM He's not as bad as I thought he'd be; at least he's not constantly trying to crack jokes and do his "act".

I know, its really a shame too. When you grow up accustomed to a certain TV personality its really hard to get used to a new guy. Drew just seems a little awkward and has almost no emotion.
I'm probably being too critical but, thats just how I feel.
mp3trojan 02-22-08, 08:52 PM giving away the Runco HT gear...nice.
LMUBill 02-22-08, 08:54 PM Thank God for no macroblocking during the models in bikinis scene.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1,020,000 in cash
2 cars
and several other prizes
mp3trojan 02-22-08, 09:01 PM We have a millionaire. Notice he said a Fremantle media production. Isn't that the American Idol folks. HD sounding more a reality to me, but that's just me.
chitchatjf 02-22-08, 09:03 PM NO HD at all in Boston.but someone WON that million!
Charlie Kocis 02-22-08, 09:08 PM I watched bits and pieces of it and thought it looked GREAT! Is it going to be in HD from now on everyday? I hope so.
QualityControl 02-22-08, 09:09 PM Anyone else notice that the Promos they ran for the weekday version of the show were letterboxed 16x9 clips in a 4x3 commercial?
sansri88 02-22-08, 09:25 PM Looked great except for the confetti in the beginning. WCBS-DT via Comcast.
We have a millionaire. Notice he said a Fremantle media production. Isn't that the American Idol folks. HD sounding more a reality to me, but that's just me.
Fremantle produces alot of shows, most in SD. Fremantle bought Mark Godson Productions a number of years ago, the longtime producer of TPIR.
Wow, what a show. The end was odd though. While the guy won the showcase AND 1 Million Dollars, it ended so quick as if it were common for someone to will that much money on game shows.
And, did anyone catch that cutie in the tight tight red shirt. It was chilly in there. Any screenshots. :D
dmedina 02-22-08, 11:04 PM KCOY, Santa Maria, CA ch 12.
Where's the beef?! Where's the HD? I can't believe it. KCOY forgets to throw the switch. Anyone here who can help notify the network ops dept?

mp3trojan 02-23-08, 07:55 AM I guess we'll see Monday morning if we get daytime HD. Hope so.
SPACEMAKER 02-23-08, 10:22 AM This just proves that I will watch almost anything as long as it's in HD.
thericky 02-23-08, 11:42 AM The Price is Right cameras have had "HD" on the side of them for a long time now... even before Bob Barker left. It seems like they upgraded the cameras a while ago, but never upgraded the rest of their dated equipment until now. It would greatly surprise me if they didn't broadcast in HD from now on, since they have the capability and the HD-ready set with new carpet and paint. ;)
I guess we'll see Monday morning if we get daytime HD. Hope so.I think they're planning for daytime HD later this year, but some positive feedback could encourage them.
acs12798 02-23-08, 12:22 PM I doubt the daytime show would be in HD this Monday. Aren't the daytime shows sometimes taped months in advance? Is the nighttime show taped as far in advanced as the daytime show? Anyway, I doubt it would line up perfectly for this Monday, unless they had previous episodes ready to go in HD for the daytime, and choose not to broadcast in it.
WhiteWhiskers 02-23-08, 02:54 PM Watched it last night (2/22) on KPIX-DT. Looked real nice in 1080i. Funny though, other than a different host and announcer, the show hasn't changed much in over 30 years. And a very lucky man guessed the price of his showcase within $1000 of MSRP and won $1M.

I'm not sure they updated anything else at all. I'm wagering they didn't use their regular control room for this show. They could have even used a mobile unit.
I'm pretty sure that, come Monday, and for some time after, it will be back to SD.
That is the same studio that HBO uses for Real Time with Bill Maher which is now in HD. Would HBO also use a mobile control unit too?
URFloorMatt 02-23-08, 04:20 PM I doubt the daytime show would be in HD this Monday. Aren't the daytime shows sometimes taped months in advance?
I think this is probably the best explanation for why HD daytime TPIR is still a few months off.
The Bob Barker Studio is producing Real Time with Bill Maher in HD. I seriously doubt CBS rolled in a mobile unit just to do a one-off TPIR in HD.
The Price is Right cameras have had "HD" on the side of them for a long time now... even before Bob Barker left. The HD logo you've seen is on the lens, which does not necessarily mean the cameras are HD.
The Bob Barker Studio (studio 33) is fully HD capable. The cameras are Sony HDC 1500Ls.

I don't think so. Unless something has changed without my hearing about it, the control room is still SD. I don't think they used their regular facilities for the primetime special. Remember, the special would also have to be edited.

Didn't see the show, but these screen caps tell me that they have a lot of diffusion filtering in these cameras. 1920x1080, but not full resolution. Just like the Tonight Show.
Stryker412 02-24-08, 07:54 PM The girl who won the Vette was a cutie. :D
WilliamR 02-25-08, 09:05 AM Pretty good quality. Colors where nice.

All the Price MDS coming up on Fridays are new, AFAIK.
KDBC TV 4 El Paso, Tx, just SD, perhaps they didn't get the memo to turn on the HD... at least at the time I changed the channel, made me turn off the TV until NBC's Amnesia, at least we knew that show was in SD.

He actually won 1.15 million. Might just be the largest give-away in the history of TV.

All time list of winners (has not been updated to include Friday's big win) (http://www.tvgameshows.net/winners.htm) The webmaster works at Union University, in Tennessee, which was heavily damaged in the tornadoes of a few weeks ago.

Can you explain to a noob like me exactly what that means? Since getting my HD D* a couple weeks ago, one of the shows that I was most impressed with (Besides LOST) for picture quality has been the Tonight Show. The couple times that I saw the monologue, I was very impressed by what I was seeing. The colors seemed much more rich and the depth of the image seemed very impressive to most of the other HD stuff I see.

In HD the purpose is often to minimize unflattering details which in the case of this show may include the set as well as the host. Images can also be softened unintentionally from processes such as encoding.
Electronic filters can also be used to sharpen an image and is more commonly called detail enhancement and aperature correction.
Pretty good quality. Colors where nice.

Since I missed last week's, I'll have to catch or record this week's.

That's the studio, not the control room, which I am 99.9999% certain is NOT HD capable. I am confident that they did not use their regular control room for the special.
OK..a guy won over a million dollars and Carey acted like he won dinner for two at IHOP. It's not that I don't like Drew Carey but he really doesn't come across as a game show host.

From reading reports from the taping, Carey was under the weather.

I think you are wrong because that control room does Bill Maher's HBO show - and it's HD.
Does anyone have a screen shot of the cutie who never became a winning bidder :(. She was just to the right of the guy who became a winning bidder and eventually winning it all? She sure was a knockout and that sweater ... ()()
:D

That explains it, I've seen a couple of the daytime shows and he seemed way off on this show
I saw the first show with Carey and thought he was nervous and was really off. When I was out sick a few weeks ago, I caught it again and thought he was much improved. As someone said earlier, these hosts that we loved such as Barker, Cullen, Rayburn, Kennedy, Convey, and others are a thing of the past. When GSN still shows old game shows, I love watching them for how the hosts handled those shows.
WhiteWhiskers 02-29-08, 07:41 PM It's going to be on again tonight! 8pm. Other people in the room make fun of me for getting excited about the various games, but I can't help that I like the show:-) I like to see people win!

You're not the only one ;). I like these specials even more then the usual show. Its too bad I didnt catch it until the end though.
Marcus Carr 03-01-08, 10:14 PM Looked better this week.
WilliamR 03-03-08, 08:32 AM It didn't seem like the prizes where as big this week. Almost seemed like the prizes on the regular show.
TPIR-HD have about as much luck giving away the $1 million as Howie does on DOND, and he has 13 cases (out of the 26) with that amount in them. :D
oh yeah ?
:D
That million dollars was supposed to be Bob's retirement. Rumor is that he now has to work the rest of his days at the animal shelter where he dines with his spade and neutered friends. Oh well, at least it was given away in HD.
WhiteWhiskers 05-22-08, 09:22 AM Just emailed CBS. The schedule they post to their website always shows the night version not being in HDTV. Don't know why as the show is always in HDTV for the night version anyway. Posting a screen capture from the CBS website last night which shows last night's show and next Wednesday as not being in HDTV.
WhiteWhiskers 05-28-08, 06:37 PM Well my pleasant email must have been routed to the right people, as the schedule is now correct. "The Price is Right" is now shown as broadcast in HDTV!

The other thing you need to realize is you're not seeing the first year of the first game show Bob Barker hosted, either.
Hosts grow into their shows with time; I remember watching Wheel of Fortune in the early days and Pat and Vanna didn't click perfectly from day one, either.
