View Full Version : iPhone or Pocket PC wifi to IR remote options?
my friend has an iPhone, and I have a pocket PC. it occurred to me why cant we use the wifi to talk to a IR repeater inside the HT cabinet. I googled and cant find any such device. anyone know of something that would do this?
I'm in the same boat as you, Whitey…
As far as I can tell, there's IRTrans with iRed (the hardware is somewhat spendy) and then there's ZephIR (which didn't impress me much, and seems somewhat limited)
Recently I found the Global Caché GC-100 series that handles the TCP/IP to IR (+rs232 and relay controls) but has no control software of its own. There are XP and Vista options for the software…no Mac options yet though.
I want to use an iPod Touch as a remote! …but I need Mac compatible software, or I'll just have to write my own…
dmaxdmax 06-30-08, 11:24 AM 3rd party developers are working on Touch and Phone applications. Let's hope that at least one of them has this notion. If it had a good Apple UI I'd pay for it.
You could use a remote control software like the UltraVNC server (free) on your PC and Mocha VNV on you iPod Touch. I do it and it works nicely. :-) Nemo

so close, yet so far.
Yes, it's a nice start. If only he could incorporate some of the suggestions we made... I hope his IR emitter is really only a prototype.

I already use my iPod Touch (2nd gen.) to control my SqueezeBox network so an iPod-based powerful IR control would be the icing on the cake.

Can't vouch for it as I haven't tried it.

Hum, the redeye sounds interesting as well, another product is here http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1124844
One thing is that since both apps use the iphone, although it will be able to control devices that are out of sight, for example in an equipment rack, how would it turn on a projector or a LCD that is in a separate room...?
Lots of nice apps coming out for AV control....good for us users

It doesn't matter where you are with your iphone, you could even be on a wifi network at someone else's house, or even Starbucks. It all depends on the distance between your redeye dock and the device you want to interface with. A lot of these (like Redeye and the iTach from Global Cache) have less than a 40 foot IR transmission range, so if your projector is further than that you may have to get additional Emitter extensions. I like the WF2IR from Global Cache, if i set one of those in the middle of my upstairs i can control the devices in my loft, office and bedroom without issues.
IMO the Global Cache route is the better choice, mainly for the level of customization in the SW interface and the ability to extend to other home automation functions. Redeye seems like the easiest wireless setup, but i'm not a fan of the SW they released for the iPad. Global Cache products are compatible with multiple iPad apps so it gives you more choices in SW interface, more flexibility... just takes more time to setup the more complex control schemes.

I am currently using an ipod touch as my HT remote along with A Global Cache GC100 and iRule software. Works very well! The app is free for iRule, you just have to buy the builder program ($50). The builder is a Google app, so you just use a web browser, it is completely OS independent.
