Hi everyone,

I'm passing along some information I originally came across thanks to a poster at QuadraphonicQuad. For you Chicago fans, the Heart of Chicago compilation is being re-released as a MVI disc on March 11. Though I am disappointed that this is not going to be a DVD-A, as you see from the product information below, we get DTS 5.1 and "advanced resolution" PCM stereo. I would have been far more disappointed if this was only released in Dolby Digital. If you read the description, Rhino implies that there may be future Chicago MVI releases, so support this and tell them we want more Chicago in surround! Rhino may just release Chicago II and Chicago V in MVI as was done with Donald Fagen's three DVD-As, but hopefully there's more to this than that, like CTA in 5.1!

Chicago fans circle March 11 on your calendars and support this release! I for one am looking forward to Beginnings and Hard To Say I'm Sorry in DTS 5.1!

Best,
Josh

that is disappointing - Chicago were one of the few groups with a number of DVD-A releases. Added to the site tho, thanks for the heads up

First noted at QQ.com, a MVI music representative has stated the mentioning of surround sound with this release was a MISTAKE and that NO SURROUND SOUND will be offered on this MVI disc release.

What can I say?

Oh well, then I won't be buying this. I can get the music in 2 channel via redbook for less.

Some of us who wrote to MVImusic.com expressing our disappointment/frustration regarding this release actually received responses today:

Hi Joshua:

Thank you for your feedback. I've forwarded your message along to the folks at Rhino who are part of the Chicago MVI project.

Best regards,
-Tom Capodanno

A small, perhaps insignificant victory, but I admit I was very surprised and pleased to see a response so quickly much less at all, and the fact that our messages were forwarded to Rhino is appreciated.

If any of you care enough to take a few moments to send a civil message to MVImusic.com so that Rhino can get a few more messages, it would be greatly appreciated. I appreciate the cynicism that may be directed towards me, but I can guarantee we won't get anywhere if we sit on our hands; at least this way we can't say we didn't voice our opinions. This time around there's a near 100% chance both the folks at MVImusic.com and Rhino will at least SEE your message. Take advantage!

Thanks,
Josh

OK, there is no surround sound layer, but does anyone know if the 2-ch presentation on the DVD is hi-resolution DVD-A? Or do we get some other other compressed format such as DTS? Thanks.

But is that info accurate? The current listing on Amazon and MVI.com makes no mention of multi-channel mixes (it has exactly the same info as posted in the first post, but missing that one important line about DD and DTS), and the posts earlier in this thread seemed to establish that the early announcements were wrong - only 2-channel formats would be included in the release.

Feisal, if you read the rest of the thread you'll see that the original mention from Rhino about DTS was deemed incorrect by someone over at MVImusic.com. Unless you know more than I do, and I'll do anything to know I am wrong, believe me, this release was nothing but a major letdown.

To answer "ar surround", there is no suggestion from the information about this release that the stereo tracks are DVD-A (MLP). In fact, they've removed any reference to Advanced Resolution period. All they say now is that the whole album is available on the MVI DVD. Okay, so what does that mean!? Big deal! I would wager that, at best, they are PCM like they say in the original quote above. Someone with better understanding on the resolutions could elaborate.

Sorry,
Josh :(

Thanks, Josh. Too bad it's not hi-res.

ugh. where can we get updated info? :(

It looks like MVI wants to give the impression that by default it has a DD 5.1 + 24/96 PCM 2.0ch

The Amazon page you link to from your site appears to have the updated info with any mention of surround sound, DTS/DD/or otherwise, removed. :(
