With i-tunes opened hit the advanced in the drop down menu there should be consolidate

on a shared network.

It has been 15 years since my last Mac

And it's been 10 years since my last PC...but the one time I had to do this, help my sister move her iTunes library from a Windows PC to her new Mac mini, I used her iPod for the transfer. Here's the Apple knowledge base article:

there are sever ways and they are all pretty easy. How much music is there? Are you on a shared network? Do you have an external hard drive?

oztech is right though the 1st step will be to consolidate your library

Thanks, guys...

When I hit 'Consolidate Library"...A warning comes up that says, "This Cannot Be undone"...

What is that about?

And, if you don't already have an iPod, here's an article on how to do it over a network: http://www.myfirstmac.com/index.php/mac/articles/how-do-i-transfer-my-music

Are you wanting to move the library completely to the mac or clone it
also just a note if the library is not to large i found that re-ripping my
cd's to apple lossless yeilded the best sound quality.

I have about 2500 songs..

Now when I move it to my new Macbook, I assume it is gone from that (original) PC?

Thanks guys..

If I could clone it, it'd be ideal as I'll still use my PC for music..

How do I do that??

If you have access to a external hard drive the easiest thing to do would be to copy the entire itunes folder (after being consolidated) to the external drive. Then just open itunes on you mac and import the new music from the external drive.

Last night I tried this..But I dragged my Music folder (My Music) from the PC which has more music in it) to the EXT Hard disc AND THEN to my Mac desktop.. THe copying stopped about 2/3s the way through. I couldn't restart it. So, when I openned the partially copied music file on the Mac desktop and all I had was the cover art.

I suppose I should have consolidated the iTunes file on my PC ('Consolidate library' command in iTunes) and dragged that over??

Or, was the problem dragging the EXT Hard drive music file to my Mac desktop instead of directly into the open iTunes window??

Thanks for bearing with me..

There may have been a problem with the "drag and drop of window files to a mac" after you drag them to the external hard drive, plug the drive into the mac. Then open itunes. go to import, then select the files on the external drive. It will probably work best if you only select the music files themselves and not the folders. itunes should do the rest.

Jeff--if you follow the steps in my link or in further's link exactly to the letter, you'll be able to transfer your library (including playlists and metadata.) If you try a hodge-podge attempt, you're bound to fail. Why make it hard on yourself? All the steps to do this properly are spelled right out for you.

Consolidating the library is kind of important, yes.

Here is yet another link, step by step, for the way you're trying to do it:

One last thing...

How do you set timing for a power down?

On my PC, you can set the PC to hibernate after any specified amount of time when there is no activity..

How do you do this with a MAC? I typically leave my lap top open (it sits in the kitchen).... How long until the screen turns itself off (can you adjust this)??

Thanks!

Open up "system preferences" in applications (I keep mine in my dock) and go to "energy saver" Its the one with the light bulb icon. you will be able to make all of your adjustments there.

I got my first Mac about 5-6 yrs ago when OSX first came out. I remember being very frustrated and pulling my hair out for about 2 weeks. Then I realized that I was over thinking everything and how simple things were. It all just started to make sense. I will NEVER go back to a PC as my home computer!

Ever so many days i would let it stay on and let unix do its maintenance that
usually runs in the middle of the night or download a widget called Maintidget
and do it manually.

Fortunately, I the new Macbook came out today...Compared to the macbook I just bought, it has:

2 GB of Ram (mine has 1 GB)
250 GB Hard Drive (mine has a 80 GB)
Faster CPU on new Macbook

All for the same price.... (fortunately, I have a contact at the Mac store who'll return mine for the new one without the 10% restocking fee). I am pretty excited so far... I'll pick up Fusion as well.

I got a kick out of this. I did the same thing when I got my macbook with an IBM Processor and that whole package. 3 weeks later "All new Macbooks come with Intel processors..." Fortunately, I was in a position where I was able to get a new Intel Macbook, but that's the way it is.:)
