I will say I learned my lesson with the money I spent on a Samsung DLP 3+ years ago - buy an extended warranty, the best one you can find.
Given the lesson learned and the current issues with my samsung I think I am going to be shopping. Some might call me crazy but I still love the picture of the Samsung DLPs over the LCD and Plasma Panels.
If you were to buy an LED based Slim DLP today would you buy a Samsung?

No. I was seriously considering a Samsung because of the LED lamps they now use. I stopped looking at them when I found out about the bowing issues and saw it for myself.

I stopped looking as well when I read about the bowing.
I've since learned the HLT5087s & HLT5089s line do not have this same bowing problem.
What did you end up going with?

I bought the WD-Y577 from Mitsubishi. I really really really wanted to go with the 65" but just didn't have the funds for it at the time.

I got the HL-T5689S. I've not had any problems with it. I did have it ISF calibrated by Avical, and would recomend the tv.

No, still uses HID technology to create the image. It may be expensive to replace, but it is a mature technology.
