View Full Version : Problem Passing Video Rate via HDMI

I have an Integra 9.8 feeding a Sony XBR4 dispaly, and sourced by a Panasonic BD30 (v1.6) and Toshiba XA2 (v2.8), as well as an Apple TV.

I have found that if I don't force the players to 24fps, that in Auto, they always set to 1080p instead of 1080p/24. Somehow they aren't picking up that the display can do 24Hz.

It's a pain when I want to watch video-based SD content (and I expect video-based HD content, once I have some), as I have to go into the setup for the players and configure the output frame rate.

Integra says this is a service call as the processor *should* allow the handshake between the display and the source devices to auto-set the framerate. Before I disconnect this and bring it in for service, does anyone have any ideas here?

I have tried setting the Integra to 1080p, Auto, and Through. No dice in any mode.

Have you tried hooking up either units directly? How does that work? Sounds like the Integra, though, if all three have the same reaction. But it could very well be the TV if it doesn't work direct. If it does, well, then it sounds like the Onkyo needs some TLC.

I have had to work around a similar problem. The 9.8 seems to be the 'strict' coordinator when display and source are attached via HDMI.

Connected directly to the display, my HDM players will output 1080i. When running through the 9.8, the toshiba will reset and play only at 720P or below (front projector is 720 dlp).

Hm. Good idea. I will test this tonight (don't know why I didn't think of this, it's an obvious troubleshooting technique).

Also, try bringing the video chain up in a strict order of sink -> source, i.e. display, processor, HDM player. Give each time to fully boot.

My experience is that if the HDMI EDID DDC read fails due to power up sequence, players will default regardless of what the EDID actually says. In theory the hotplug signal should cause a reread, but I have seen this intermittently depending on vendor combinations and timing.

OK, so on direct connect to the XBR4, the XA2 outputs 1080p not 1080p/24 when playing back HD DVD film-based content. So it's not the Integra, it's the XA2.

The BD30 seems to work fine, but since it's upscaler sucks, I don't use it for DVD playback. I'll pass this on to Toshiba.

Even if you lock it down to 1080p/24?

If I lock I get 24fps. The issue is that I have a lot of video based content; operas, rock concerts, etc, and switching back and forth sucks.

Toshiba says the "auto" should work with the Sony, ergo there is a bug to fix on detecting source material frame rate and setting output via HDMI.
