Keyes: Blockbuster Streams Better Than Netflix

Of course if he had even a consumer level understanding of the business he would realize that folks can currently use one device in millions of homes (XBox 360) to purchase and stream a digital version of Star Trek OR watch the older Star Trek movies for free via Netflix.

Perhaps he can spend more time understanding the business when he does not have to worry about his company getting de-listed by the NYSE.

---Quote---
Blockbuster chairman and CEO Jim Keyes Nov. 20 said he eagerly anticipates the day when consumers with Internet-enabled devices and televisions are confronted with the option to either stream movie rentals from Blockbuster or Netflix.

Speaking to an investor group in New York, Keyes said Blockbuster consumers wanting to stream the new Star Trek release would be able to do so, unlike Netflix, which primarily streams older catalog fare. He said Netflix, due to existing license agreements, wouldn’t be able to stream the title for three to five years.

“If you want to watch Star Trek on [Blockbuster On Demand], you just push the button and in seven seconds you are watching the movie,” Keyes said. “If you are a Netflix customer [and do the same] only then do you discover you are [actually] watching Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”

The Dallas-based No. 1 DVD rental chain has partnered with Samsung, TiVo and Motorola to offer Blockbuster movie rental streams through a variety of consumer electronics and portable devices.

The CEO said the burning question among investors and analysts continues to involve the fate of Blockbuster’s 5,300 stores worldwide (as of Oct. 4) in the face of changing consumer options for movie rentals.

Blockbuster earlier this year said it would shutter nearly 1,000 underperforming stores through 2010, with some earmarked for closure possibly morphing into lower-rent Blockbuster Outlet stores focused on selling used product. Keyes said the remaining stores would evolve into key components of a revised business strategy focused on making movie rentals and sales available across multiple, complimentary distribution channels.

My first tube amp... What should I ask Santa for?

I have been contemplating getting into tubes for a while and now I am ready to take the plunge. Looking for a high quality Tube Integrated that doesn't break the bank.

I am using Swan D2.1SE Monitors that are rated at 85db. I have read that tube watts are better than SS watts and I have also read that watts or watts. I'm not sure what/who to believe. I just want to make sure I have enough power to get room filling sound. I am in a town house so it is not a HUGE room. I'm not looking for reference levels just enough to get my toes tappin'.

My source will either be a Computer, Apple TV, or Airport Express.

I came across the Neuhaus Laboratories T-2 Amplifier with built in DAC (USB/Optical). It looks like it would fit the bill but a
I'm totally unfamiliar with the company or product.

I've seen people recommend the Onix SP-3 and even though I know it is a Melody product, I have a hard time associating quality with anything that came by way of AV-123. I've also looked at the Cayin A-50T and a few Primaluna pieces. I know with most of these I will have to use a DAC and will use something like a DAC Magic or Musical Fidelity V-DAC.

Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Samsung ht-as730s, major issues

I purchased a Samsung ht-as730s today, my first surround sound system, and I'm having some major issues that have left me totally puzzled. I hope someone can help.

I have three devices connected to it via HDMI but have only tested two so far:
Comcast digital cable reciever
Sony DVP-CX995V

The Comcast seems to be outputting 5.1 fine. All 6 channels are showing up.

The Sony is for the most part not outputting 5.1. I've tried several DVDs that I know to have 5.1 Dolby digital tracks on them, and if I hit the "audio" button I do not even get the 5.1 track as an option.

I tried several movies- a couple of them brought up all 6 channels, but most of them didn't.

I'm also having an issue where if a movie is at 2:35 x 1 instead of 16 x 9, it's being shrunk and placed in the middle of my screen (letterboxing on all four sides!). This didn't used to happen before I ran the Sony through the Samsung so I suspect it's the Samsung that is doing it.

Is there some reason I'm not able to select the 5.1 Dolby tracks through HDMI? I thought HDMI supported surround sound.

The Sony manual says the following regarding running audio through the HDMI: "Be sure to set DOLBY DIGITAL to DOLBY DIGITAL and DTS to DTS". I did this. Still can't see the 5.1 track.

How to handle walk-out basement windows

Howdy everyone. I'm in the initial design process of finishing my basement and building my new home theater. Because of a column and the placement of the mechanicals, the best place for the theater appears to be against the walkout part of the basement. Also because we are planning on renting this out someday, just doing away with the sliding door and window seem like a bad idea (for some reason people are willing to pay more for walking out than for a nice theater).

My main question is how bad are those windows going to mess me up when soundproofing the room? I don't care about sound getting outside, but I want to minimize the sound going upstairs. I'm planning on whisperclips, double drywall, and green glue. However, I just can't think of how I can isolate that wall (and I think I'll need to omit the whisperclips from that wall as well). Will not disconnection the window portions of that wall completely negate soundproofing the rest?

Just for kicks, I've attached drawing I did in SketchUp. I'm in the process of mapping it out in AutoCAD and getting to work in earnest. The dimensions of the theater will be about 15x20.

Bonus question: What issues will I have with the fireplace?

Thanks, y'all. I've been silently reading this forum for a while, and I'm excited about actually getting involved.

After searching, I couldn't quite find the answer to a very basic question I have. How exactly does this work, and how is it installed?

Also, does this deminish the overall sound qaulity of your surround sound system?

Sorry for the basic question, hopefully it will render an easy answer. Thanks in advance guys.

Windows Seven - Messed up MPEG2

When trying to get around Windows Seven restriction on using external codecs instead of supplied internal ones, I somehow messed up the ability of the system to play MPEG2 files, which means that everything works now, but recorded and live TV, which both show Codec Error.
I need to know proper registry configuration for playing of these. The whole problem started when I started to play with registry (preferred DirectShow codecs) to force Windows to use ffdshow after both MCDU and Win7DSFilterTweaker failed miserably. The truth is that messing up my MPEG2 playback was the only change I was able to make as the system never used ffdshow for DIVX playback as I wanted to.

Hey all,

I have a 46z4100 and when i smell the vent holes on the top right, it smells what i would consider a cent of burning plastic?

Is this normal?

I've had no issues at all with the tv, just noticed it when moving the tv. No vents are covered or obstructed.

Also my tv is about a year old.

The first steps towards HT system. Need help on deciding

Hi,

I just joined the forum recently, and found that this is where the place to ask people for audio solutions.

Currently, I'm trying to build a 2.1 system that i will upgrade to 5.1 system in the future.

Consideration:
Receiver:
- Sony STR DH800

Front Speakers:
- Sony SS F-5000
or
- Polk Audio Monitor 50
or
- Polk Audio Monitor 60

Subs:
- Polk Audio PSW10

I couldn't find a well known(reviewed) subs that might land around 100$, so this is my first option.

I would like to get some suggestions on how well this might work out in terms of sound.

Setup:
- PC > Asus Xonar DX
- PS3 > HDMI or Optical output for audio

Room:
10 x 13 empty living room(just moved).

TV:
- Samsung LN46B750(planning to buy this as a set with the HT for gaming and movies usage)

Thanks in advance for all the inputs that you guys shared
