A great thing about being a custom electronics client is that you don't have to worry about the details.

You can just say what you want and wait for it to happen.

"Mount the flat panel right over the fireplace."

"Make it so I can see the TV regardless of the direction my chair is pointing."

"Have the TV be invisible until I want to watch it. Then have it burst through the wall like the Kool-Aid man."

CE pros, meanwhile, are all about sweating the details. Our first annual "Mount This!" contest pays tribute to some tricky TV installations.

*Drop-Down Video Wall*
You deserve to win an award anytime you can hide a video wall in a ceiling … and have it drop down at the press of a button to create a floating wall of TVs. The client wanted to make sure his TVs didn’t interfere with the large windows.

*10 People, 2 Cranes*
We installed a Runco 103” Plasma in a living room cabinet. This is the everyday watching TV setup and is used all day long.

It took 10 people and two cranes to install on a reinforced I-Beam inside a custom made piece of furniture.

Paris Theme Illuminates Home Theater

*Paris Theme Illuminates Home Theater*
By Arlen Schweiger
*Daydreaming about a themed theater room? Here’s one guided tour, with the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe included.*

Home theater designer Donny Hackett has always wanted to visit Paris but had never gone. So he decided to bring Paris here. More specifically, to Tennessee and the attic of Jason Crist’s suburban Nashville home.

A walk upstairs brings Crist to the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Notre Dame cathedral—and a screen that could take up a wall in the Louvre.

Image: http://www.electronichouse.com/images/slideshow/looking-in.jpg (http://www.electronichouse.com/slideshow/category/7310/1084)

All of the attractions, including the whopping 154-inch screen, were custom built by Hackett, whose previous themed theaters have included nods to Titanic and Mann’s Chinese Theater. Crist already had a screen, surround-sound system and seating riser in his attic but wanted a more elaborate theater room. Hackett began the reconstruction project by deciding the screen would have greater impact on the opposite wall.

“I walked into the theater room, and there was nothing technically wrong with it, but it was backwards,” Hackett says. “You had to go into the room and around a corner before you saw the screen.”

He built the steel Eiffel Tower portion as a separation between the theater space and a snack area, which would later include a cobblestone floor and mural to invoke the feel of a Paris bistro.

The ceiling structure was modeled after a rose window of the Notre Dame cathedral, and the rear wall has a mural of the Arc de Triomphe. Hackett also incorporated the Paris motif in his clever concealment of the equipment rack. It’s located behind a motorized framed poster of the Eiffel Tower; a removable piece of wainscoting below the poster provides access to the rack.

Cowboys Stadium: The Programming Challenges Involved

By Tom LeBlanc
*PanTech Design programmed a Crestron system to control unmanned broadcast cameras at the new stadium. And got great photos.*

Most people got their first glimpse of the new Cowboys Stadium — the largest domed stadium in the world — during the regular season home opener between the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants.

The Crestron control system programmers, however, got a sneak peek.

Grapevine, Texas-based PanTech Design was charged with developing, installing and programming the Crestron system and control panel that operates five unmanned broadcast Canon BU-45H HD cameras strategically placed throughout the stadium.

Image: http://www.cepro.com/images/slideshow/Camera_View_550.jpg (http://www.cepro.com/slideshow/image/5631/)

One is underneath the stadium’s gigantic scoreboard for aerial shots. Two are located “at the very, very top of the catwalk above the stadium,” says PanTech president Troy Morgan. Another is placed in player tunnels for shots of the players heading to and from the field. One has yet to be installed.

Checking out the stadium was fun, says Morgan, but it was also a huge challenge.

*Cowboys' Challenge*
Since the cameras are for broadcast, a director needs to be able to pan, tilt, zoom and do countless other features using a Crestron CAMI-DJ and a touchpanel.

PanTech is no stranger to programming control of cameras, says CEO Micah Thurlow. But this was the most substantial amount of control it ever programmed for cameras. “The challenge was in making it fast and intuitive for controlling all of the features that a broadcast camera has," Thurlow says.

20 Great Looking Racks

*20 Great Looking Racks*
By EH Staff
*Here are 20 great looking equipment racks for your home theater.*

You might think that equipment racks, by themselves, are no better than the shelves of your wooden entertainment system.

Why would you spend more than $500 for a place to store your Blu-ray player, receiver, etc.?

Equipment racks do actually provide significant value. Ventilated shelves and integrated power protection can keep your equipment running properly. This will save you both time and money. Racks can also add a neat appearance to any room when they’re recessed into walls and cabinets.

Image: http://www.electronichouse.com/images/slideshow/home_technologies.jpg (http://www.electronichouse.com/slideshow/category/6817/1036)

But perhaps the biggest value is that custom electronics professionals (CE pros) can put together a system off site, testing all the components to make sure they’re working properly before they’re in your home.

We’ve rounded up some of the best looking racks on the planet built by CE Pros, in case your in need of ideas for your own system.

*All In One Spot*
The unique thing about this installation is all the electronic components, except the wall mounted TVs, are in these racks. There are no local components. All the hi-res signals are transferred through fiber.

*Home Technologies*
“On this remodel, we faced many challenges fitting this amount of equipment into such a small mechanical room. There are actually two more racks hidden from the front view, and they had to vary in size due to water pipes

The Tweeter brand is up for grabs.

The Canton, Mass.-based specialty electronics retailer that once had nearly 200 locations across the U.S. shut its doors in Dec. 2008.

However, it's possible that its brand soon will be back from the dead.

Atlanta-based liquidator Apto Solutions is accepting bids for Tweeter's intellectual property, including its name and URLs, according to Christopher Re, VP of business development for Apto.

All bids are due by Nov. 30, 2009, says Re, who is handling the bidding process. "Then a deposit is due Dec. 7 and a closing will take place on Dec. 16," Re adds.

While Re can't reveal the bidders, he does say "some are national retailers."

Tweeter's intellectual property includes several regional brands that it acquired during its East to West expansion.

R.I. Project Showcases Designs on Energy Saving

*R.I. Project Showcases Designs on Energy Saving*
By Steven Castle
*Innovative energy monitoring and other green technologies help make 'Green Life Smart Life' home more sustainable.*

Building a house can be a major stress-inducer. There are almost always setbacks, cost overruns and other unexpected angina producers. Stir in the prospect of building green, and those setbacks can become lengthy delays, cost overruns can become major budget busters, and the angina—well, let’s not even think about that.

Despite the dangers, Kimberly Lancaster and Joe Hageman have bravely waded into green home building—even incorporating home technologies to make their soon-to-be completed coastal Rhode Island home as energy-efficient and sustainable as possible.

Image: http://www.electronichouse.com/images/slideshow/glsl-house.jpg (http://www.electronichouse.com/slideshow/category/7295/1082)

The 4,400-square-foot residence will be managed by a home control system that uses an innovative energy monitor to enable the homeowners to see how much power they’re using. A lighting control system, meanwhile, will be in charge of dimming the home’s energy-efficient and long-lasting LEDs (light emitting diodes). Vampire or standby power used by appliances and electronics when they are “off” will be curbed automatically. Various sensors will cut the juice to other devices whenever a room is unoccupied.

So far, at least, the implementation of those green technology has gone smoothly. (At press time the home’s walls were being plastered, so many of the electronic systems had only been planned for and wired.) But careful coordination and communication with the home’s custom electronics professional, Jeff Mitchell of Carolina, R.I.-based Robert Saglio Audio Video Design, made the process much less stressful.

*Let the Games Begin*
After buying the property in 2005, Lancaster and Hageman looked to retrofit an existing structure, but encountered lots of those angina-inducing moments—in this case 2-by-3-inch wall construction and mold in the insulation. A retrofit wasn’t worth it, so the couple opted to demolish the structure and build new.

*Steve Caesare didn't want to throw something together in his basement; he wanted things to be perfect.*

It’s easy to get excited about home theater. Go on the AVS Forum. There certainly is a lot to get your creative juices flowing and your mouth salivating. While seeing the big, beautiful, comfortable rooms might get many to jump into a project, Steve Caesare wanted to take his sweet time.

“I’m genuinely a do-it-yourselfer type of guy. My dad was that way and I grew up that way,” he says. “I’ve always grown up looking at a project with the thought that if at all possible, I’ll try to educate myself on how to do it and try my own hand at it.”

Image: http://www.electronichouse.com/images/slideshow/Caesare-screen.jpg (http://www.electronichouse.com/images/slideshow/Caesare-screen.jpg)

So that’s exactly what Steve did. For three years, he researched how to create his perfect room. He did lots of reading, combed the AVS Forum for suggestions, and talked to people that had been there and done that.

Not to say that Steve hasn’t jumped the gun before. He had actually attempted theater greatness two years prior. Alas, it was not so great. “After a month, we actually stopped that,” Steve says. He decided to go another route with the framing, for better sound isolation. He also wanted to try something different with the soffit. “So I really don’t count that.”

So Steve waited, researched, added more to the budget and decided to do something better. After all, he had spent enough time thinking about it. When he and wife, Vanessa, looked at houses, he always wanted the theater room. Of course, this basement layout afforded him that dream and much more.

By Robert Archer
*Six products to keep in mind this holiday shopping season.*

November is a big month for a lot of reasons. The change in temperature. Thanksgiving. Football.

And the start of the holiday shopping season.

If you’re looking to spice up your home theater or just add to your home, here are six products to consider.

Image: http://www.electronichouse.com/images/slideshow/pioneer_elite.jpg (http://www.electronichouse.com/slideshow/category/7285/1081)

*Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD Blu-ray Player*
Pioneer’s Elite BDP-09FD Blu-ray Player, with its THX certification, ups the performance ante established by the company. Features include Wolfson DACs for each analog output, jitter-eliminating PQLS technology, 16-bit video processing and BD Live with 4GBs of memory.

*Triad DesignerSeries Invisible Loudspeakers*
Triad has been busy this fall, launching several new product lines, including its DesignerSeries of stealth speakers. The DesignerSeries can be installed behind a wall or ceiling to appear completely invisible. The speakers can be used for home theater and multiroom audio and produce sound pressure levels up to 105dB.

We got you covered. We've compiled a list of hottest games and accessories for the PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PC.

Want a fun way to stay in shape? Then don't forget to pick up Wii Sports Resort or Wii Fit Plus. Here are 18 Holiday Gifts for Gamers.

*Borderlands (PC, PS3, Xbox)*
This is a sci-fi shooter that marries first-person shooter gameplay with RPG-like looting and level chasing. Procedurally generated guns and shields means you never know what your next target will drop. And make no mistake, everything you shoot is a loot pinata.

*Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox)*
The first Modern Warfare, which came out in November 2007, is still enjoying heavy play online. Early looks at the unreleased sequel have exposed some real controversy surrounding its single player campaign, including fighting in a war-torn Washington DC in one segment and killing civilians in another.

*Brutal Legend (PS3, Xbox)*
The big draw of Brutal Legend is the story. This is a loving tribute to metal music, voiced wonderfully by Jack Black and featuring the talents of metal musicians Ozzy Osborne, Lemmy Kilmister, Rob Halford and Lita Ford.

By EH Staff
*We round up the latest plasma, LCD, LED and OLED TVs.*

Consumers can look at the evolution of the flat-panel TV market in two ways: the products are more affordable, and they are more eco-friendly.

Leading the way are new technologies like light emitting diode (LED) and organic light emitting diode (OLED). These join the market’s traditional technologies — plasma and LCD — to provide consumers with a growing choice of products.

We've rounded up some of the latest flat-panel TVs to hit the market.

4 Technologies Worse Than Their Predecessors

*Innovation isn't always a good thing. Here are four technologies that are worse than what they replaced.*

The world lives, eats and breathes for new technology. It’s what CE pros and enthusiast consumers do every day.

The pursuit of technology is relentless. Everyone wants the latest in electronics, from flat panels to iPhones.

But is innovation always good? Here are four technologies that aren’t better than their predecessors.

Image: http://www.electronichouse.com/images/slideshow/3dtv_technology.jpg (http://www.electronichouse.com/slideshow/category/7226/1080/)

*3DTV*
I admit that 3DTVs are very cool. JVC, Sony, Mitsubishi, Panasonic and DPI had some impressive demos at CEDIA Expo 2009. It’s great for home cinema, but I don’t believe 3D will ever become pervasive in U.S. homes, not like Blu-ray will.

*Digital Music*
Sure, digital audio files are easier to manipulate, distribute, copy, etc. But do they sound better? There is certainly more clarity in digital music. I recall Paul McCartney saying how much he hated hearing The Beatles’ music on digitally remastered CDs because he could now hear every mistake the band made while recording.

10 Manliest Man Caves

*These guys didn't just mark their territory; they created spaces that would make most men giddy.*

Some guys love power tools. Some love cars. Some are happy with a comfy chair, a remote and something to nosh on. Then there are those who need to go above and beyond—to create a space that most men only dream about.

Today, we call these spaces “man caves.” In these caves, though, the only things being fired up are amps, Blu-ray movies, video games and gigantic TVs (sometimes multiple ones). They are places where a guy can play with his toys without worrying about prying eyes or greasy kid fingerprints.

We know some man caves look more like Fight Club than much fun, so we’ve compiled 10 of our favorite manly-man high-tech hangouts.

*Hog Wild*
No matter how dainty you are, it’s hard not to look manly standing next to a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Maybe that’s why this homeowner parked his hog collection right in his home theater. The 40-by-25-foot basement houses both of his passions, allowing guests to snuggle up with a good movie and a good ride.

*The Car Barn*
The idea of tilling the land and milking cows at the crack of dawn seems downright manly. However, Todd Whitworth didn’t want to deal to cow pies and a petting zoo. Instead, this 16,000-square-foot barn houses a 65-inch Sharp 1080p LCD, three Crown amplifiers, a DBX audio processor, a Cary preamplifier, Escient’s CD management system and a Samsung Blu-ray player.

By Robert Archer
*We round up our 10 favorite Blu-ray releases coming in November.*

The end-of-the-year shopping season means lots of goodies on the Blu-ray front.

Sadly, November’s docket of Blu-ray releases doesn’t include any movies starring Megan Fox.

But there are a number of blockbusters scheduled to come out to coincide with the holiday shopping season.

Going where no Blu-ray release has gone before, new Blu-ray titles include movies starring Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, Sulley and Mike, Tom and the Griswold family.

*Forrest Gump (Nov. 3, 2009)*
Originally released in 1994, Forrest Gump features one of Hollywood’s most memorable characters. Played by Tom Hanks, Forrest deals with the changes of U.S. history from the early 1960s up until the time the movie was filmed.

*Monsters Inc. (Nov. 10, 2009)*
Monsters Inc., one of Pixar’s funniest movies, revolves around the world of monsters attempt to generate energy through the harvesting of children’s screams.

The top scarers, James P. Sullivan (Sulley) and Mike Wazowski, are locked into a race to save a little girl from some not-so-nice monsters that want to hide the fact that children are not as toxic as the monsters believe.
