Nielsen Ratings (From Marc Berman’s February 9, 2010, Programming Insider newsletter and blog at Mediaweek.com) http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums/a/t...51/m/146100472 Overnight Ratings for Monday, February 8th Fast Affiliate Ratings (Live Plus Same Day data) Total Viewers: CBS: 13.34 million, Fox: 11.86, ABC: 11.38, NBC: 5.11, CW: 2.11 Adults 18-49: CBS: 4.4 rating/11 share, Fox: 4.2/10, ABC: 3.6/ 9, NBC: 1.8/ 5, CW: 1.0/ 2 Yesterday’s Winners: How I Met Your Mother (CBS), The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love (ABC), House (Fox), Two and a Half Men (CBS), The Big Bang Theory (CBS), CSI: Miami (CBS) Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats): One Tree Hill (CW), Heroes (NBC), Life Unexpected (CW), The Jay Leno Show (NBC) Note: The fast affiliate results for Monday will be posted at PIFeedback by 12 p.m. ET. Go to the website, click on Ratings Box (the first category), then Last Night’s Results, and Monday, February 8, 2010. Ratings Breakdown: CBS opened this second week in February on a winning note, with a first-place finish in both total viewers and adults 18-49 care of its combination of How I Met Your Mother (Viewers: #3, 10.11 million; A18-49: #2, 3.8 rating/10 share), Accidentally on Purpose (Viewers: #3, 9.23 million; A18-49: #3, 3.4/ 8), which is moving to Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. to make room for benchwarmer Rules of Engagement, Two and a Half Men (Viewers: #1, 17.55 million; A18-49: #1, 5.7/13), The Big Bang Theory (Viewers: #1, 16.20 million; A18-49: #1, 6.0/14) and CSI: Miami (Viewers: #1, 13.46 million; A18-49: #1, 3.9/10). Rule of Engagement returns on March 1. While the rating results remain positive for Two and a Half Men, the personal problems for Emmy nominated star Charlie Sheen continue to escalate. Yesterday he was charged with felony menacing and two misdemeanors (assault and criminal mischief) in connection with a Christmas Day incident involving alleged domestic assault against his wife. If convicted of the felony charge, he could face up to three years in prison. Second-place ABC was on the map as a result of growing The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love, which averaged a healthy 12.33 million viewers and a 4.1/10 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m., and respectable Castle (Viewers: #2, 9.48 million; A18-49: #2, 2.6/ 7 at 10 p.m.). Take a look at the half-hour breakdown for The Bachelor, which built in every half hour: The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love (ABC) 8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 11.20 million (#2), A18-49: 3.5/ 9 (#3) 8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 12.03 million (#2), A18-49: 4.0/10 (#2) 9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 12.52 million (#2), A18-49: 4.2/10 (#2) 9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 13.57 million (#2), A18-49: 4.6/11 (#2) Who knew The Bachelor would remain so resilient. Also worthy of positive mention last night was Fox’s line-up of House (Viewers: #1, 13.55 million; A18-49: #1, 5.1/13), which has a winning lock in the 8 p.m. hour among adults 18-49, and compatible 24 (Viewers: #3, 10.18 million; A18-49: #3, 3.2/ 8). Over at NBC it went from bad to worse with its line-up of Chuck (Viewers: #4, 6.60 million; A18-49: #4, 2.3/ 6), the season (or series) finale of Heroes (Viewers: #4, #4, 4.41 million; A18-49: #4, 2.1/ 5), and the second-to-last episode of The Jay Leno Show (Viewers: #3, 4.31 million; A18-49: #1, 1.2/ 3). If NBC really wants to move forward, it needs to officially cancel Heroes, which has been struggling for two years now. Let it go and move ahead. Last was CW with original episodes of dramas One Tree Hill (Viewers: 2.22 million; A18-49: 1.1/ 3) and recently introduced Life Unexpected (Viewers: 2.01 million; A18-49: 0.9/ 2). While I recognize who The CW’s target audience is, the female audience cannot be that large based on these results. • Source: Nielsen Media Research data (R = repeat) Note: Previous overnight ratings are available at Marc Berman’s Programmers Insider blog: http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums/a/t...51/m/460103871 • • • • • • • • • • • Nielsen Ratings (From Marc Berman’s February 8, 2010, Programming Insider newsletter and blog at Mediaweek.com) http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums/a/t...51/m/623108372 Overnight Ratings for Sunday, February 7th Fast Affiliate Ratings (Live Plus Same Day data) Total Viewers: CBS: 80.53 million, ABC: 3.20, Fox: 2.49, NBC: 1.70 Adults 18-49: CBS: 29.7 rating/61 share, Fox: 1.0/ 2, ABC: 0.9/ 2, NBC: 0.5/ 1 Yesterday’s Winners: Super Bowl XLIV (CBS), Super Bowl XLIV Post Game (CBS), Undercover Boss (CBS) Yesterday’s Losers (excluding repeats): ‘Til Death (Fox) Ratings Breakdown: It was all about the Indianapolis Colts vs. the New Orleans Saints last night, with Super Bowl XLIV at a mammoth (and estimated) 96.38 million viewers and a 34.9 rating/68 share among adults 18-49 from 6:30-9:45 p.m. Note: this does not include the 6:30 p.m. half-hour. The half-hour breakdown is as follows: Super Bowl XLIV (CBS) 7:00 p.m. – Viewers: 97.20 million; A18-49: 34.6/71 7:30 p.m. – Viewers: 97.85 million; A18-49: 35.3/70 8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 95.21 million; A18-49: 34.5/67 8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 97.31 million; A18-49: 35.4/68 9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 95.03 million; A18-49: 34.9/67 9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 85.40 million; A18-49: 32.1/63 (includes the first 15-minutes of the post game) As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate. Compared to the fast affiliate results for Arizona vs. Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLIII on NBC (Viewers: 89.15 million; A18-49: 33.5/65 on Feb. 1, 2009), this was an increase of an estimated 7.23 million viewers and four percent among adults 18-49. When the final national ratings are released, expect over 100 million viewers for the Saints victory. Leading out of Super Bowl XLIV was the post game at 44.87 million viewers and an 18.1/41 in the demo in the 10 p.m. half-hour (specific results from 9:45-10 p.m. were not available). In series premiere/preview news, non-scripted Undercover Boss was amply sampled with 31.35 million viewers and a 13.1/33 among adults 18-49 in the 10:30 p.m. half-hour (specific results from 10:15-10:30 p.m. and 11-11:15 p.m. were not available). Undercover Boss airs in its regularly scheduled time period, Sunday at 8 p.m. out of The Amazing Race, effective this week. It was slim pickings elsewhere, of course. ABC filled the evening with the following rotation of non-originals: ABC/Sunday 7:00 p.m. – America’s Funniest Home Videos (R) – Viewers: 3.98 million (#2), A18-49: 0.9/ 2 (#2) 8:00 p.m. – Modern Family (R) – Viewers: 2.81 million (#3), A18-49: 0.8/ 2 (#3) 8:30 p.m. – The Middle (R) – Viewers: 2.27 million (#2), A18-49: 0.6/ 1 (#3) 9:00 p.m. – Modern Family (R) – Viewers: 2.50 million (#3), A18-49: 0.8/ 2 (#3) 9:30 p.m. – Cougar Town (R) – Viewers: 2.58 million (#3), A18-49: 0.9/ 2 (#3) 10:00 p.m. – Modern Family (R) – Viewers: 3.88 million (#2), A18-49: 1.3/ 3 (#2) 10:30 p.m. – Modern Family (R) – Viewers: 3.57 million (#2), A18-49: 1.2/ 3 (#2) Fox aired two more burn-off episodes of sitcom ‘Til Death from 7-8 p.m. (Viewers: #3, avg. 1.71 million; A18-49: #2, avg. 0.9/ 2), followed by repeats of The Simpsons (Viewers: #2, 2.93 million; A18-49: #2, 1.3/ 3), The Cleveland Show (Viewers: #2, 2.45 million; A18-49: #2, 1.1/ 2), Family Guy (Viewers: #2, 3.07 million; A18-49: #2, 1.3/ 3) and American Dad (Viewers: #2, 3.07 million; A18-49: #2, 1.4/ 3). You know a show is a burn-off when original telecasts are scheduled opposite The Super Bowl! Last were two repeat episodes of NBC’s The Biggest Loser at an average 1.70 million viewers and a 0.5/ 1 in the demo from 7-11 p.m. • Source: Nielsen Media Research data (R = repeat) Note: Previous overnight ratings are available at Marc Berman’s Programmers Insider blog: http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums/a/t...51/m/460103871 • • • • • • • • • • • Weekly Nielsens Prime-time Viewers Week Ending February 7, 2010 (In thousands) 1 SUPER BOWL XLIV CBS 106,476 2 SUPER BOWL XLIV POST GAME CBS 75,474 3 UNDERCOVER BOSS CBS 38,654 4 AMERICAN IDOL-TUE FOX 24,705 5 AMERICAN IDOL-WED FOX 20,999 6 NCIS CBS 19,234 7 TWO AND A HALF MEN CBS 16,506 8 NCIS: LOS ANGELES CBS 16,422 9 THE BIG BANG THEORY CBS 15,506 10 CRIMINAL MINDS CBS 14,745 11 THE MENTALIST CBS 14,682 12 CSI CBS 14,491 13 CSI: NY CBS 14,158 14 CSI: MIAMI CBS 13,440 15 HOUSE FOX 13,378 16 THE GOOD WIFE CBS 12,808 17 GREY’S ANATOMY ABC 12,549 18 BONES FOX 12,372 19 LOST ABC 12,090 20 BACHELOR, THE ABC 11,734 21 SUPER BOWL GREAT COMMRCLS CBS 10,990 22 LOST-8PM ABC 9,965 23 24 FOX 9,957 24 BIGGEST LOSER 9 NBC 9,481 25 HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER CBS 9,281 Source: Nielsen Media Research http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/02/09...-viewing/41481 • • • • • • • • • • • Weekly Nielsens Prime-time Viewers (Adults 18-49) Week Ending February 7, 2010 (In thousands) 1 SUPER BOWL XLIV CBS 50,820 2 SUPER BOWL XLIV POST GAME CBS 38,353 3 UNDERCOVER BOSS CBS 21,318 4 AMERICAN IDOL-TUE FOX 11,808 5 AMERICAN IDOL-WED FOX 10,199 6 LOST ABC 7,301 7 THE BIG BANG THEORY CBS 7,165 8 TWO AND A HALF MEN CBS 6,679 9 HOUSE FOX 6,353 10 GREY’S ANATOMY ABC 5,906 11 NCIS CBS 5,644 12 LOST-8PM ABC 5,445 13 BACHELOR, THE ABC 5,442 14 MODERN FAMILY ABC 5,184 15 CRIMINAL MINDS CBS 5,052 16 OFFICE NBC 5,032 17 KITCHEN NGHTMARE FOX 5,011 18 BIGGEST LOSER 9 NBC 4,896 19 CSI: MIAMI CBS 4,835 20 HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER CBS 4,809 21 NCIS: LOS ANGELES CBS 4,732 22 CSI: NY CBS 4,508 23 PRIVATE PRACTICE ABC 4,402 24 BONES FOX 4,379 25 THE MENTALIST CBS 4,295 Source: Nielsen Media Research http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/02/09...-viewing/41481 • • • • • • • • • • • Weekly Nielsens PrimeTime Network Averages Week Ending February 7, 2010 Average rating, share and audience in each category ADULTS 18-49 CBS 8.5/22, 11.2 million Fox 3.2/8, 4.2 million ABC 2.5/7, 3.2 million NBC 1.5/4, 2.0 million CW 0.9/2, 1.1 million Each rating point equals 1.32 million viewers ADULTS 25-54 CBS 9.5/23, 11.9 million Fox 3.7/9, 4.6 million ABC 2.8/7, 3.5 million NBC 1.8/4, 2.2 million CW 0.8/2, 1.0 million Each rating point equals 1.24 million viewers TOTAL VIEWERS CBS 9.0/22, 26.2 million Fox 3.1/7, 9.1 million ABC 2.4/6, 7.0 million NBC 1.6/4, 4.7 million CW 0.7/2, 1.9 million Each rating point equals 2.92 million viewers 2009-10 SEASON AVERAGES Average rating, share and audience in each category ADULTS 18-49 Fox 3.6/10, 4.8 million CBS 3.4/9, 4.5 million ABC 2.7/7, 3.6 million NBC 2.6/7, 3.4 million CW 0.9/3, 1.3 million Each rating point equals 1.32 million viewers ADULTS 25-54 CBS 4.3/11, 5.4 million Fox 4.0/10, 5.0 million ABC 3.2/8, 4.0 million NBC 3.0/7, 3.7 million CW 0.9/2, 1.1 million Each rating point equals 1.24 million viewers TOTAL VIEWERS CBS 4.3/11, 12.6 million Fox 3.4/8, 9.9 million ABC 3.0/8, 8.8 million NBC 2.6/7, 7.5 million CW 0.7/2, 2.0 million Each rating point equals 2.92 million viewers • • • • • • • • • • • Weekly Cable Nielsens Prime-time Viewers Week Ending February 7, 2010 (In thousands) 1. Some Favorite Links
(Updated December 8, 2009) Aside from the very helpful general links listed in the post below this one, here are some of the TV writers, columnists and bloggers I feel are especially worth your time to keep up with. (Those needing a subscription are marked.) Some other require registration. I would suggest you register at the Aaron Barnhart, Marc Berman and Maureen Ryan sites at a bare minimum. But almost all allow basic scrolling through much -- if not all -- of their content. Aaron Barnhart of The Kansas City Star writes a lot and also links to numerous podcasts each week which are fun listens. He is also a favorite because he long ago mentioned this thread as “indispensable” (and, back in my Los Angeles days, was a great college basketball companion -- although I suspect I wouldn't be happy sitting next to him at a UCLA-Kansas game). http://blogs.kansascity.com/tvbarn/ If you revere accuracy, Maureen Ryan’s blog for the Chicago Tribune TV critic is always a good and stimulating read. http://tempo.typepad.com/entertainment_tv/ Marc Berman is MediaWeek’s “Mr. Television”. His knowledge about ratings and TV in general is amazing. Even more amazing is how his one-man blog posts daily ratings every day. (Nothing else on the web matches it.) Holidays, weekends, it doesn’t matter, somehow he gets it done. And that is far more than you can say for any other reputable online source (even those with far larger staffs) I know of. http://pifeedback.com/eve/?cdra=Y&s=32410241 Ratings news is always available at the well-run TV By The Numbers. Nielsen has cracked down recently on access to their numbers, but these folks still manage to crank out the numbers and charts: http://tvbythenumbers.com/ Overnight ratings, available seven days a week from MediaWeek TV maven Marc Berman, can be found here: http://pifeedback.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/63310451 It is always be fun to read TV Guide's Matt Roush for reasoned commentary, reviews and his entertaining and far-ranging twice-a-week Q&A. http://www.tvguidemagazine.com/ask-matt/ http://www.tvguidemagazine.com/matt-roush-daily-review A new and fun read about all things media is: http://www.mediaite.com/ TheWrap.com is a new and highly regasrded website features former Variety and TVWeeker Josef Adalian and others: http://www.thewrap.com/tv Perhaps the most respected inside-the-TV-business writer is Bill Carter of The New York Times. (subscription needed) http://query.nytimes.com/search/quer...&submit=Search One of the nation’s best TV writers, Rich Heldenfels of the Akron Beacon Journal, had his job description (and duties) drastically changed in late 2006 in a newsroom cost-cutting move. Now he also has to cover and review movies and all of pop culture. But he loves TV and his blog contains some gems – though sadly nowhere near as often as before the change: http://www.ohiomm.com/blogs/heldenfiles/ The Hollywood Reporter is very good for inside TV -- and especially production -- news. It took a giant step forward in February, 2008, when it snatched TV and HD reporter James Hibberd from Television Week who keeps all up to date with ratings, casting and show news. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...sion/index.jsp The Washington Post’s TV page is where you’ll find the tart writing of Lisa de Moraes (who unfortunately seems to get snarkier and more self-indulgent by the week) and the Pulitzer Prize winning critic Tom Shales: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...sion/?nav=left Rob Owen TV Editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has his “Tuned In Journal” blog. (Rob is also past president of the Television Critics Association.) You can read him here: http://www.post-gazette.com/tv/tunedin/ The Television Critics Association provides helpful links to dozens of its members. Find the TCA site here: http://tvcritics.org/ If you want lots of information, including episode lists, cast and crew members of almost any TV show past or present, try the tv.com online reference libary: http://www.tv.com/ The legendary trade publication Variety is, sadly, now almost useless as a source of information. The show biz slang can be fun – although a bit puzzling to newbies. Don't expect any new information to be posted from, say noon Friday until Monday afternoon, though. And even during the week, with a rapidly shrinking staff and few apparent attempts to stay on top of things, the TV news is generally (but not always) well behind many, many other sources. http://www.variety.com/index.asp?lay...t_main&dept=TV Trade publication Broadcasting&Cable is a reliable source of news. Washington Bureau Chief John Eggerton is one of the best reporters around: http://www.broadcastingcable.com/ Eggerton and other B&C staffers often contribute to the Broadcasting&Cable blog “BCBeat”, which can be provocative: http://broadcastingcable.com/blog/1380000138.html MultiChannelNews reports industry news with a decided cable-centric slant (and usually casts satellite as the devil), but is on top of almost every major item of interest to the industry. Its coverage of Washington regulatory news and the FCC is first rate -- especially if you favor cable's business model over other delivery systems. http://www.multichannel.com/ Media Life Magazine is written for ad agency people, and concentrates on the (for them) key 18-49 demographics. But it is sprightly and well written with some very good insight into which and why shows are in trouble – or not. Negative: the site operates -- and ratings are posted -- just Monday through Friday. But the insights of Toni Fitzgerald are worth the wait and especially worth your time. She is on maternity leave now, (a baby girl April 6th!) but hopefully will be back soon. http://www.medialifemagazine.com/ Amy Amatangelo, “Zap2It's TV Gal”, who writes frequently for many newspapers including the Washington Post and Boston Globe, keeps a sharp (and usually very amusing) viewer’s eye on TV happenings. Between her newspaper gigs, you can read her regularly at http://www.zap2it.com/tv/news/zap-t...43.storygallery The general zap2it site can be hit and miss, usually has items of interest. Too often it is simply a rewrite of the trade magazines or news releases from networks. It slows to a crawl on weekends and holidays. http://www.zap2it.com/ The Futon Critic basically shuts down on weekends. During the week it is best to check for press releases, especially from cable networks. But its charts on which shows are returning, starting, or ending -- and when -- are invaluable. http://www.thefutoncritic.com/home.aspx A few of the Twitter accounts I follow: Aaron Barnhart, Kansas City Star TV writer/critic: http://twitter.com/TVBarn Maureen Ryan, Chicago Tribune TV writer/critic: http://twitter.com/moryan Hal Boedeker, Orlando Sentinel: http://twitter.com/tvguyhal Matt Roush, TV Guide Senior TV Critic: http://twitter.com/RoushTVGuideMag Brian Stelter, NY Times TV writer: http://twitter.com/brianstelter Robert Lloyd, LA Times TV critic: http://twitter.com/LATimesTVLloyd Gail Pennington, St. Louis Post Dispatch: http://twitter.com/GailPennington Rich Heldenfels, Akron Beacon Journal: http://twitter.com/rheldenfels Alan Sepinwall, Newark Star Ledger TV Critic: http://twitter.com/sepinwall Phil Rosenthal, Chicago Tribune media columnist: http://twitter.com/phil_rosenthal Howard Kurtz, Washington Post, CNN media critic: http://twitter.com/HowardKurtz Richard Sandomir, NY Times sports media writer: http://twitter.com/RichSandomir Roger Catlin, Hartford Courant TV critic: http://twitter.com/rcatlin Denise Martin, LA Times TV beat writer: http://twitter.com/denisemartin TVByTheNumbers: http://twitter.com/TVbytheNumbers Ellen Gray, Philadelphia Daily News TV critic: http://twitter.com/elgray Matea Gold, NY-based LA Times TV writer: http://twitter.com/mateagold Frazier Moore, Associated Press TV writer: http://twitter.com/tvfrazier Kate Aurthur, LA Times TV writer: http://twitter.com/KateAurthur Ben Grossman, Broadcasting & Cable Editor-in-Chief http://twitter.com/BCBenGrossman Amy Amatangelo: http://twitter.com/AmyTVGal The Futon Critic: http://twitter.com/thefutoncritic DirecTV: http://twitter.com/DIRECTV Mark Cuban: http://twitter.com/mcuban BBC America: http://twitter.com/bbcamerica TV Shows On DVD: http://twitter.com/TVShowsOnDVD Jon Friedman: http://twitter.com/JonMediaWeb Discovery Channel: http://twitter.com/Discovery Syfy: http://twitter.com/Syfy TV Guide: http://twitter.com/TVGM Last edited by fredfa; 12-08-09 at 07:16 PM.. |

Thanks for all the kind words. They are much appreciated.
Now if any of you know people who are as interested in television as you are, why not copy the Hot Off The Press site link and email it to him or her (or preferably, them!) Let's get even more people participating here and joining the AVS family. And keep checking in during the next few weeks to keep up with all the latest news about new, returning and cancelled shows as the networks gear up for their upfronts which start three weeks from today. For the civilians among us, the "upfronts" refer to a series of meetings held by the networks mainly for advertisers to try to get them to commit money ahead of time ("upfront") for TV shows not yet produced -- as well as for returning programs in the upcoming prime time TV season. The networks traditionally announce their fall schedules at the upfronts -- although those are always subject to change. |

To answer an earlier question, my guess would be that "Heroes"will return with about the same numbers it had, maybe a shade fewer. I don't think it has come close to reaching the burnout point that seems to have afflicted "Lost".
(And I wouldn't be at all surprised if the ratings don't sctually improve a little.) |
