Strangely the only time I can even get the core DTS recognized by the Onkyo is by setting DTS HD to bitstream on the BD-10. If I set it to pcm I do not get any DTS at all. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
The Panasonic can only send DTS - HD or Dolby True HD through PCM after it has decoded them internally. Therefore, the display on the Onkyo will only show "uncompressed pcm." It cannot send any of the advanced codecs via bitstream or PCM to be decoded in the Onkyo.

I would love to, but when we set it up for HDMI, the Denon passes a snowey image back-n-forth (HDCP prob most likely) and the sound was messed up (the bass was low). I didn't even mess around w/ the sound further, as we couldn't get a picture to pass thru.

I will post if these recents tips helps me.

I did this tonight. HDMI audio was set to 'on'. I turned it off.

I moved everything to PCM w/ downmix to 'off'. All speakers set to 'large'. The subwoofer doesn't give a test sound during the test sequence.

Fired up a movie, and still only 2 channels. Checked the Denon 3806, and it says EXT-IN and only FL/FR speaker icons are lit.

I'm at a lost. Perhaps I've got a broken Panny???

Apologies for not having the time to read this entire thread. Can somebody explain to me why my Denon AVC-A11XV shows 'Multi channel in' when the DMP-BD10 plays back a DTS-HDMA disc? My Panny is connected using HDMI to the amp. The Panny is set to output Dolby Digital/DTS as 'bitstream', and the lossless codecs as 'LPCM'. Shouldnt the Panny output the DTS core as DTS bitstream?

I believe the DTS HD decoder does the job of decoding HD masters core, so if you want the bitstream, set DTS HD to bitstream. Just dont forget to set it back to PCM when your watching a DTS HR disc.
This is why I set everything to PCM!

shamus (or anyone else)

So if I have this correct, if I'm playing a disc with DTS-HDMA on it, will the Panasonic decode only the core 1.5 mbps stream or because it has DTS-HD Hi-Res decoder, is it decoding and outputting a higher bitrate DTS-HD bitstream from the lossless HDMA?

I ask this because when playing back a disc, when pressing the "audio" button, it says DTS-HD. I'm not sure if this is Panasonic's way of saying that it's recognizing it's playing a DTS-HDMA soundtrack, but still may only be decoding a core 'cause it's not HDMA equipped. Tough language, but do you know what I mean?

Thanks

As far as I know it only extracts the "core" and not anything higher from a masters track.

By the way you've been slacking off lately on your reviews, whats up???????

I've been curious about this as well. I have a Denon 4306 and use the HDMI connection with the Panny. I wonder if the Denon would decode the DTS core at full 1.5 if sent as bitstream or if it needs to be decoded in the Panny to extract the full "core". It appears that is the case as I have tried it both ways and PCM seems to be superior with DTS Master Audio.

Hello All, I'm trying to decide on which BDP to get and was wondering why the members on this thread chose the Panny over the other Players. I'm trying to decide between the Panny, S300 or Sammy 1400. Appreciate your input. Thanks!

Thanks Dana, have you upgraded any improvement, is it even worth upgrading if it is just for playability and stability? this question goes to everyone who upgraded to 2.3 version.

Many thanks,
Peter

I would choose panny over s300 but I don't know about the new 1400.
I read a magazines comparing panny, s300 and and the 1200 they are all good reviews but the reviewer rated the 1200 best of the 3 and panny second and sony s300 last. Forgot the a/v magazine's name but I think it was
mentioned in this thread just a few pages back. Goodluck.

did it a long time ago, can't tell any difference between performance before the upgrade and after.
its usually a good idea to install the latest firmware, especially if you are experiencing any problems with your current firmware. I always use the latest firmware on any of my computerized/electrical items, unless there are documented problems with the latest firmware upgrades.

Question?

does anyone here own Onkyo 705 and panny dmpbd10a? if you own it, have you tried a movie with dts hr audio option? how does it sounds and what movie actually from blu ray with DTS HR? do you really get 7.1 sorrounds sounds?

Thanks a lot,
Peter

Rather than unearth my otherwise unused PC for this update (did it for the last one), would you briefly step through your Mac process?

What you used to extract it from the .exe (which I downloaded just before heading off to work), what software you used to burn the cd (e.g., Toast, any special settings)? Thanks.

Sure. Stuffit Expander 11 (free) will open .exe files. I used Burn Folder to burn a CD. No settings needed. (I did burn the CD at X8 rather than X24 speed.) I've done previous updates this way with success every time. I have tried using Disk Utility with less success. I tried using Burn Disc from the Finder File Menu once without success.

FW 2.4: Good News

Just did the upgrade to FW 2.4 on my BD-10A. Process went well; as before FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON PANNY'S WEB SITE.

Best news of all: "Lord of the Rings EE Fellowship of the Ring", all four discs now play perfectly. Kudos to the Panasonic BD Engineers for this.

For "Blu&HD": the "K" simply means black finish, so the answer is Yes.

Last time I updated to 2.3 I had to send the unit into Panasonic. Once bitten, twice shy. Now I've just burned the file to a CD-R but I'm a little nervous because my new PC's software (Sonic) wouldn't let me drop the burn speed below 48x (I was hoping for a slow 8x burn). It also has different names for the options to burn a disc - I chose "Data Disc", but I couldn't find the option to finalize the disc. When I put the disc back into the PC it says that the disc is "appendable".

Windows is reading the file as 33,625 KB after being burned to disc.

Anyone have an idea if this will screw up my update?

As far as I know, you want to burn the file as an image, not a data disc.

Dana

PS. Checking the file size on the CD I burned that successfully updated my BD10. 34,431,416 bytes.

You can also use Toast - Data - ISO9660 - Burn at 4X
I use Stuffit Expander as well to get the PANA_DVD.FRM file. I dropped the file into toast. No Folder.

This update seemed to go a little faster than 2.2 (my last) I didn't do 2.3
I have a BD10, not a BD10A

Thanks To Jeff for the heads up

Huh? If you use the link posted above, it takes you to the page where you can choose either model. But, it's the same download.
