But I guess I really don't need it to be lossless and could just switch outputs if my reciever will allow that kind of setup. I've been bugging the wife to get a blu-ray player for a while and now she finally broke, but it needs to be under $400 and I want it to be full featured. Maybe I will hold out for the the new Sony, if I can.
Any player that bitstreams TrueHD or DTS-HD MA will do the same thing, so it doesn't matter if you buy the 1500 or wait for the Sony, both will do the same thing.

The only way to get PiP audio from any Blu-ray player is to have the player decode the lossless track to PCM, and then mix the multiple PCM tracks, and then send the PCM track to your receiver via HDMI (this is what the PS3 does). You won't get any lights for the lossless tracks on your receiver.

Or have the player take a lossless track, decode the lossy portion to PCM, mix, and send to your receiver as PCM. The 1500 already does this.

But if you want your receiver to do the lossless decoding, then you will never get secondary audio from any player you buy, so you can wait forever.

That said, the rumor is that the 1500 will be adding onboard DTS-HD decoding (the Broadcom chip in it does support that too) at some point in the future. I heard before they add Profile 2.0, but nothing has been announced to that point.

BTW, the new 300 BD will use TrueHD, which means if you set your 1500 to PCM, the player will decode the TrueHD to PCM, mix everything else, and send it to your receiver as PCM.

I think I see what you are saying, man what a headache. Who ever made some of the desicions on the blu-ray side are real morons, they should use some of that 50GB to just add another soundtrack with the primary and secondary audio mixed. I should be able to pick the best audio option for my setup and set it and forget it like Ron Popeil.

I don't think any player will let you do Audiophile Bitstreaming AND have the PIP audio. It's not a Samsung thing.

The download is available via the player if you have it connected to the internet. I think that's what catttman meant by "on my lan cable".

He said he downloaded it using the LAN connection. It doesn't look like they've posted it to the website yet.

Well, I'm interested to hear what this Firmware does.

Anyone have an idea? As a general rule, I try not to update firmware unless something isn't working.

I'm guessing that's not the prevailing wisdom when it comes to 1500 updates?

I chatted with one of the Samsung CSRs and first they gave me a link to a file that was called BDP1400.iso.

I said to myself, "Self...prolly not a good idea to use that one."

Then I asked the CSR again about the 1500 because the file he sent me seemed suspiciously like one intended for the 1400. At that point he said there was no firmware update for the 1500.

There is no spoon....

*sigh* Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until they publish it to their website or I decide to move move my ethernet cable from TiVo to 1500 for a bit.

In the meantime...if anyone has insight into what this firmware does...please share.

pax,

The system information says I'm now at 080621.02. When it finished dnloading and updating, it shut off and when I turned it back on, all my settings had been reset to factory spec. I'll watch a disc tonight and also check Ratatouille which I was having very slight skipping problems with (although I suspect it is the disc as everything else I've watched has been flawless).

I installed the update., but I can't tell what's new. I watched a good bit of Cars with no problems. My Harry Potter disc with the problem still has it, but I'm starting to believe that most problems I've encountered are disc specific which is very good news....sort of....

Live Support said "improves playback combatibility".

I'm guess that means maybe they fixed playback for a few problem discs, like Rat...

They fixed whatever was wrong with Ratatouille, I've had zero skips so far and I'm 2/3 through the movie. The sewer escape in the beginning is where I could always reproduce the errors and it was super clean. Also, and I don't know if this was my imagination or not, it seemed to load the disc way faster. Rat was the only disc I found to load slowly and now it popped up like all the others. So, at least an hour into the movie and no problems like before. Oddly I just watched this last night and was seriously contemplating returning this copy of the movie for another perhaps to some production error and now it's playing flawlessly.

Well I guess I spoke too soon, but in the last half hour of the movie I saw four skips, one bad enough it reminded me of layer transition. I'm not sure if Rat is a DL or not but after that first big skip, there were three more, each time I heard the player rereading the disc, as if it had lost its place. The skips were very very short, both audio and video, and were barely noticeable (aside from the 'layer-change' one). Since this was the only disc I was having problems with, I look forward to see if anyone else sees any differences in the new firmware or not.

EDIT: According to thedigitalbits.com, Rat is a BD-50 DL so what I saw could have been the actual transition, although I don't know why the skips would occur on one layer and not on the other.

1500 with the new firmware seems to be operating as designed.

Although...like my iphone after each firmware update....it does seem...

Snappier ;-)

What about the player resetting itself? Does the firmware update fix that too? It's usually the resolution and movie frame (24fps) features that reset. This happens only upon intial startup. For example, the resolution will change from 1080p to 1080i and the movie frame feature will change from "on" to "off". Again, this does not happen all the time, but when it does, it's annoying.
