Taking the movie that won the Oscar for VFX and blurring said VFX. What a genius idea!

Not.

Well, isn't softening up the video sometimes a technique to make the CGI blend better/less noticeable?

Because it's a better movie maybe ( just my opinion but Transformers is wildly overrated )

Because Hollywood hates anything that has any connection to George Lucas (ILM).

Not effects wise, now lets be honest. Dodgy looking blurred polar bears?

I previously posted that The Golden Compass was one of the worst examples (best?) of over use of DNR I have seen in my HT. I still do.

Jeepers, Xylon...

You really opened my eyes about this one. I've had no problem recognizing DNR on just about every other title that has been discussed on this forum. I never saw TGC in the theater, and having only the BD to judge from, I swore up and down that it was purely intentional, stylized shooting and processing. The difference between the trailer and the film is amazing. I'll never again be content with the disc.

I completly agree. I believe the biggest facotr in The Golden Compass winning for best special effects was because Pirates 3 was also in the running, and sense both Pirates 3 and Transformers were from ILM it split their votes.

This comparison with the trailer is a sad thing, basically just that they couldn't leave it alone. The comparison of the fur on the bare is nigh and day, it's just rediculous.

i just watched this earlier today....the movie (story/plot/execution) was not great, but definitely isn't as bad as people made it out to be. They could've tightened it up.

However...this is the first movie where the DNR actually took me out of the movie. In the beginning when Asriel is talking to Lyra and they're walking outside, i saw smearing (first time ever for me in a BR movie)....there were at least 4 or 5 other shots like that too. If you look at xylon's caps of "The Longest Day" you'll know what I'm talking about it. It just looked cartoony.

Has New Line had one decent release yet? I guess this is what we can expect from Blade 1,2,3, Seven, Final Destination, LOTR and all their other films?

People used to bitch about HD-DVD having low bitrates....now that we have high bitrates, what's the point? If everything is going to be DNR'd to hell, it doesn't really matter.

Like I said before and others bitrates are nice but the transfer also matters. They are dependent to each other.

You are right. These screens really tell the story don't they? The doggies look like claymation on the BD pic.

I have seen a lot of screens that show the loss of detail on different films, but these screens are some of the best at showing what a travesty DNR really is.

I also just realized that in the first set of screen shots that the soldiers on the left side of the frame aren't pointing their rifles at the bear

exactly. and I love how at sites like HTF, we are called "AVS rabble rousers" for actually comparing screenshots!

You know, "You can't tell anything from a screenshot...yada, yada, yada..."

How anyone could see the movie/trailer comparo and STILL act like DNR is no big deal (which seems to be 90% of this forum now) is beyond me.

Amazing...simply amazing how crappy it looks compared to the trailer and that some will act like it isn't that bad because it is "better than the dvd"
