Armstrong Adds Primetime Games As Part Of NFL Network Renewal

Operator Will Present Eight Contests To Subscribers On Value, HD Advantage Packages

Mike Reynolds -- Multichannel News, 11/2/2009 4:08:42 PM

Armstrong and NFL Network have reached a multiyear contract extension that adds the service's primetime game schedule for the first time.

The operator, which provides video, high-speed Internet and telephone services to customers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland, has been carrying NFL Network since 2005. NFL Network is available to Armstrong digital customers as part of its Value Package (channel 466) and to its high-definition customers as part of the HD Advantage Package (channel 180).

The new deal, terms of which were not disclosed, enables Armstrong to present NFL Network's eight primetime games, which kick off this season on Nov. 12 with the Chicago Bears visiting the San Francisco 49ers. Given its service area, NFL Network's Dec. 10 coverage of the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers at the Cleveland Browns should be of particular appeal to pro pigskin fans.

"Armstrong has carried NFL Network since 2005," said Jeff Ross president of Armstrong in a statement."We serve some of the most avid NFL fans in America and are pleased to continue offering our customers the most in depth coverage of NFL football."

"We are pleased to extend and expand our relationship with Armstrong," added NFL Network COO Kim Williams. "Armstrong subscribers will now get even more football when our Thursday Night Football schedule kicks off on November 12."

NFL NETWORK 2009 PRIMETIME THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

Eight-Game Slate Kicks Off With 49ers-Bears on Nov. 12

Super Bowl Champion Steelers Visit Rival Browns on Dec. 10

Division Champs Chargers and Titans Wrap Up Schedule with Special Friday Night Christmas Game

First International Game for NFL Network

NFL Network announced today its eight-game, regular-season primetime Thursday Night Football schedule. Game times for the contests — six on Thursdays and one on Saturday – are 8:00 PM ET, with a special 7:30 PM ET start on Christmas. NFL Network’s schedule features teams that combined for seven playoff berths and six division titles in 2008.

Bob Papa (play-by-play) and Cris Collinsworth, who won a 2006 Sports Emmy and is a nominee in 2008 for Best Event Analyst for NFL Network broadcasts, return for their second season calling the games. The following are highlights of NFL Network’s Thursday Night Football:

* San Francisco head coach Mike Singletary faces the team for which he starred during his Hall of Fame career as the 49ers host the Chicago Bears and new quarterback Jay Cutler on Thursday, Nov. 12.

* The Miami Dolphins, who equaled the best worst-to-first improvement in NFL history (10 more wins than 2007) to win the AFC East last season, visit the NFC South champion Carolina Panthers, who had their own five win increase last year, on Thursday Nov. 19.

* The NFL’s Thanksgiving Day tripleheader on Thursday, Nov. 26 concludes with the NFC East champion New York Giants visiting the Denver Broncos in the first NFL “turkey day” game in Denver since 1963.

* New head coach Rex Ryan leads the New York Jets north of the border to Toronto to face the Buffalo Bills in NFL Network’s first-ever international game on Thursday, Dec. 3. The Jets defense will face an additional challenge in new Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens, who had an NFL-best 213-yard receiving game in 2008.

* Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes lead the defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers to Cleveland for an AFC North clash with the Browns and new head coach Eric Mangini on Thursday Dec. 10.

* 2008 NFL MVP Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts visit the AFC South rival Jaguars on Thursday, Dec. 17, marking the third consecutive primetime meeting in Jacksonville between the clubs. Jacksonville’s explosive running back Maurice Jones-Drew has rushed for 571 yards and five touchdowns in six career games against the Colts.

* Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys visit 5,000-yard passer Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Saints have won their last three home games against Dallas.

* The NFL Network schedule wraps up with a special primetime Christmas game on Friday, Dec. 25 as NFL passing leader Philip Rivers and the three-time defending AFC West champion San Diego Chargers visit a Tennessee Titans squad which won the AFC South last year with an NFL-best 13-3 record.

Each NFL Network telecast will feature a live, two-hour pregame show. In addition, a one-hour postgame show will wrap up the action with interviews, highlights and press conferences.

NFL.com LIVE again will offer complementary Thursday Night Football game coverage including select live video, statistics and interactive applications. NFL.com LIVE coverage in 2007 and 2008 earned Sports Emmy nominations for outstanding new approaches in coverage.

NFL Network 2009 Schedule

Week 10: Thursday, November 12 at 8:00 PM ET Chicago Bears at San Francisco 49ers

Week 11: Thursday, November 19 at 8:00 PM ET Miami Dolphins at Carolina Panthers

Week 12: Thursday, November 26 at 8:00 PM ET New York Giants at Denver Broncos (Thanksgiving)

Week 13: Thursday, December 3 at 8:00 PM ET New York Jets at Buffalo Bills (in Toronto)

Week 14: Thursday, December 10 at 8:00 PM ET Pittsburgh Steelers at Cleveland Browns

Week 15: Thursday, December 17 at 8:00 PM ET Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars

Week 15: Saturday, December 19 at 8:00 PM ET Dallas Cowboys at New Orleans Saints

Week 16: Friday, December 25 at 7:30 PM ET San Diego Chargers at Tennessee Titans

NFL Network games also will be carried on free, over-the-air television in the city of the visiting team and in the city where the game is played if it is sold out 72 hours in advance of kickoff.

Cablevision doesn't carry NFL Network but I will get the Giants and Jets games OTA. So the only game of interest on that schedule I'll miss is the Cowboys vs Saints.

As a big NFL fan I only see 2 games on that schedule that I'd hate to miss. Fortunately I have Directv and won't miss them (the Denver and New Orleans games).

The only game for San Diego on NFLN is that last one on Christmas Day, and it well may be totally meaningless!

From what i read it sounds like the pregame/halftime/postgame shows with eisen, deon, mooch etc. will be in the studio in LA & not at the stadium this year.
Dont like that....when they are at the game it gives it more atmosphere.

Were these games all previously scheduled on a Sunday and now moved forward to the previous Thursday?

I'm aware that the NFL has a flexible schedule, but that seems a little more disruptive to ticket-holders than moving from Sunday afternoon to Sunday night.

Thursday night games are scheduled like the rest of the games. It's late season sunday night NBC games that can be moved, and fans know that when they buy their tickets in advance. And if your team's game does get changed, it's because they're having a great season...or an awful one.

Hi Rich,

I guess you're not much of a pro football fan. This will be the 4th year NFL Network has the exclusive 8 Thursday night games.

Best,
Ken

Yeah, they've done this for a few years now, and I believe this will be the 2nd year in which they started airing their games earlier in the season to avoid televising meaningless games. I fear that the best game they have on their schedule, however, is going to mean nothing for the team's involved when it airs (New Orleans pretty much has their division wrapped up already).

Any word if NFL Network will be upgrading their audio to DD5.1 this year? Their 2.0 mix was the biggest technical complaint in past years.

The reason for the earlier start now is NFLN said rather then jam all the games in a shorter frame of weeks they wanted to extend it so now they start nov 12 instead of starting on thanksgiving as they had a few years ago.

Also just because the Saints might have the division wrapped they still most likely will be fighting for #1 NFC seed which is important.....or even 16-0.

16-0 would definitely be something to play hard for, but if you look at their schedule, there aren't too many teams left to give them an issue. I hope I'm wrong, because that could be a great game. And the reason for the earlier start is to avoid all the meaningless games they were stuck with on Saturdays in prior seasons that absolutely no one gave a damn about.
