JVC HD350 OR Sony VPL-HW10

Hey Guys. . . . MY ROOM is DONE!!!! Floating floor, double insultated ready to go. Problem. . .I have a samsung Blu ray, dish network, and xbox 360. I love the life like pictures I see in Best Buy Blu Ray demo with the Samsung Plasma's OMG they are too cool. Which projector should I go with to give me the same type of BAM when I play a blu ray disc? JVC HD350 OR Sony VPL-HW10??? I will be using a Carada BW 16x9 screen in a room that is TOTALLY light controlled. Thank you for your help.

What is it about the picture quality that you like? When some folks say "life like picture" they are referring to a real sense of depth - 3d. Others are referring to extreme sharpness, or vibrant colors. Others, accurate colors. What is it that jumps out at you?

I would go for the JVC if you can still find that particular model at a good price.

I'm talking about that 3d feel. There are times I actuall feel like I'm staring at something live. I want that feel. is it possible on a projector?

I wouldn't look at the HW10 -- look at the vw15 if anything and start the comparison there

Did you already order the screen? I assume you ruled out 2:40:1 / 2:35:1 for a reason

Right now, I'm trying to figure out of the JVC's still have the terrible input lag that the older models had.

The HW10/HW15 are known to have amongst the lowest input lag. This would be important if you are a gamer.

Then again, the Sony's don't have FI, which is good for sports.

Which is my catch-22 right now.

I'm about to puul the trigger on a 1.78:1 screen.

is this a bad choice?

Nobody can say if it is a bad choice but you. Sorry - I know that is the most common answers on these boards.

If you watch mostly sports and TV then a 16X9 screen is probably the best way to go.

If you watch a lot of movies then a 2:35:1 / 2:40:1 screen is probably the best way to go.

I put in a 16X9 screen. The thing with my room is that I could have gone with a wider screen to give me a bigger picture for movies while maintaining the same size for TV watching. It is really a no-brainer to me that I should have gone with 2:40:1 but you live you learn.

This thread addresses the exact same question and has a few links in the thread

Separetely I would personally also wait for a few more reviews on the Panasonic AE4000. The features with zooming for different material is worth a lot to me even a little less on the PQ side. With that said I would want to see a few more reviews before I seriously considered it.

I would make every effort to compare the planar 8150(DLP) and Epson 8500(working FI) to the JVC to see which comes closest to the pic you are looking for.

About screen size----What will you watch the the most in your new theater? If you are going to watch a lot of movies consider that most movies are 2.35-2.40 aspect ratio, however about 25-30% are 1.85 AR.If you get a screen in 1.85 AR, 16X9 stuff will still be within the black borders of the screen and 1.85 movies will be full screen. The 2.35-2.40 movies can be full width with bars on top and bottom. In a fully light controlled theater with a JVC projector, with it's amazing blacks you will have a set-up that you do not have to touch! Feel free to come by and I'd be happy to show you my set-up.JB

yeah screen size is going to be dependent a bit on what you watch and also your room size and layout.

What is your actual budget on the projector?

My room is 13 x 20 and I have a budjet around 6500.00 for projector and screen. I would say that My viewing is 60% Blu rays 20% 360 games and 20% tv/HD dis network

With that type of viewing I would definately do a 2:35:1 / 2:40:1, but that is a very personal preference.

What are the dimensions of your front wall?

1 or 2 rows of seating?

WIth a $6,500 budget there is no way I would get either one of those projectors. You are better off either finding a RS20 from last year, HW15 (this year), AE4000 (this year) or a RS15 (this year). Personally I would take the RS20 over the RS15 due to the addition of CME. I would seriously consider the AE4000 if I was buying this year, but it is hard to say.

Seriously you should go start a more open thread -- what to buy for $5,000 -- have you looked at any projectors to determine what technology you prefer?

My front wall can fit a screen with an overall with of 105" and a height of 56" +. I'll have 2 rows with the last row sitting 18' dead center. I'm a newbie to the projector scene. In a perfect world I would love to recreate the same image that Samsung's 1080p LCD screne produces. Everytime I see a blu ray on there it looks life like/3d. Is there a projector/screen combo in my budget that can accomplish this??

Well I am saying that is one you should consider. I think the RS15, the HW15 or the AE4000 will make you very happy.

Have you looked at any projectors in any store? There has to be quite a few around DC. At least see what kind of technology you prefer that is really where you need to start.

The zoom function of the AE4000 is to me worth a lot, but if you end up going with a 16:9 screen then that function doesn't matter much

Why do you downplay the RS10 so much? Of the projectors he has listed I bet only the RS15 bests it and not by much. The only real upgrade that the RS15 offers is the FI. If the OP doesn't care about that then the RS10 is likely a better value proposition.

First off, both of these are discontinued. But, given the option only between these 2, I'd agree the JVC.

1) they are discontinued

2) Have you seen the RS15? How do you define real upgrade? There are additional differences

3) The OP has a $6,500 budget and asks which of these two discontinued models should I get......I definately suggest either getting newer models or look at some other ones.

4) The big thing I have said several times is go look at a few PJ's no matter what brand to at least figure out what technology he likes
