Suggestions for 2.1 non-bluray/dvd speaker system
I have a LN46A550 w/ an approx 10 yr old Yamaha receiver. Ideally what I'm looking to do is upgrade my receiver, get a bluray player, and get a 2.1 speaker package.
I don't want to deal w/ rear speakers and wires, as I have a small Living Room. I am looking to spend less than $1,000 when all is said and done. I have been contemplating a few things, a Samsung HTIB 2.1 including a bluray player...or the Samsung sound bar pkg + bluray player. With those 2 options I'm still left w/ my 10 yr old receiver, but I could buy an Onkyo receiver later on. Ideally I would just buy an Onkyo receiver (w/ 3 HDMI inputs), a Samsung bluray player, and a Samsung 2.1 speaker package consisting of a sub and 2 floorstanding speakers, but Samsung doesn't seem to offer JUST speakers unless I go w/ the soundbar/sub package. Thanks in advance. |

In a small room bookshelf speakers are probably all you will need - and with a sub will perform as well as most floor-standers - and outperform many of them in the same price-range. You pay for cabinets with towers - and for ones in your price range most of the money goes into cabinets and not sound quality. A decent center channel should also be on your list.

I had the precursor to Samsung's 2.1 Bluray system (which would obviate the need for a receiver). I can tell you that the sound was rather lacking in quality, especially for the price (500 bucks). However, it had lots of features that were pretty awesome. The bluetooth support, for example, was actually very good compared to stand alone bluetooth receivers I've purchased for 100+ dollars.
Now, for movies I'd say you could probably be very happy with the svelte design, and rather extensive list of features, but if you were to use the system for music, I suspect you'd find yourself disappointed. My recommendation would be to purchase separate components anyway (what if something breaks? Then you're out a bluray player and the stereo). Ultimately, Samsung isn't really a speaker company. Although it would be nice to mostly match components so they look nice together, I think you'll find yourself much more happy if you were to go with separate components. What specifically? Well, sure there are products we'd all find to be universally awful, but once you get to a particular level, you'll find it's fairly subjective. I will echo the previous poster, bookshelf speakers and a subwoofer should do you well. |

thanks for the feedback everyone. I will be listening to music, not that often, but I still want a decent audio system for more than just movies. I think I'm going to go w/ the piece by piece method, and I'll most likely get a set of speakers first (bookshelf + center, or I'm still contemplating the sound bar + sub), then a bluray player, then a new receiver.
