Just watched it. Not a fan of George Lopez but the hype and a personal request from my old man (who worships this particular comedian) got to me so I checked it out. First impressions: great HD-friendly set (neon colors and deep reds looked great on TBS; this is easily their best-looking HD anything they've ever shown), strong opening monologue (much better than Conan's, Fallon's and Leno's debut shows this year), good band (shame Lopez didn't introduce any band members), annoying crowds and only OK interviews. No theme song for Lopez's show, just his usual stand-up special song. Lopez seems to be heavy into cultural pride (which seems sincere) so, until we're two or three weeks into the show and the newness of having a Latino-hosted late night show wears off, we won't know how good (or bad) he's at doing interviews with guests besides friends like Kobe Bryant, Eva Longoria Parker and Santana. I really liked that the show took full advantage of being on cable and the risque humor was a little more than I expected for TBS (still a basic cable channel). That Q&A Street segment had me in stitches!
The liberal use of unbleeped Spanish profanity and barely-bleeped English curse words was also something even "The Daily Show" doesn't come near.I don't know about anywhere else but on Time Warner Cable in NYC my TBS-HD recording of "Lopez Tonight" came with weird audio that sounded 'echoey' and didn't sound like a normal EQ'ed mix. Anybody else have 'echoey'' sound? Edit: Wow, Jimmy Fallon just sent Lopez a shout out and wished him luck on his new show. That's classy! Last edited by dad1153; 11-10-09 at 12:55 AM.. |

Overall, I thought it was a great show. The set was phenomenal in HD, better than Fallon or Conan. And the monologue was great. I watched Fallon and Conan this year. Lopez was comfortable and funny. You'd think Fallon was never on TV a day in his life on his premiere(hell, you could still say that now). I liked this show, I'll give it a whole week or two(as I always do). So far I have a feeling that Mr. Zucker over at NBC is asking, "What's George Lopez's phone number?". It was nice knowing you, Conan! ![]()

Honestly even Lopez looked like a chameleon at times. His skin shifted colors like Longoria's sequined dress.

Watched night 2 via D*. IMO a phenomenal looking set in HD. PQ is very good. Moving shots during the interviews added an element of energy but might get tiresome night after night. Overall this show breaks the cookie cutter late night talk show mold, much more than Leno. Its look makes the competition look bland by comparison. Kimmel, Fallon and especially Ferguson (only show too cheap to have a band) look like the cable shows. Lots of potential and it looks like TW serious and in for the long haul. The Tonight Show has had record lows, this could push it down even further.

Still the same bad sound on the 2nd show as in the premiere. Seriously, you have such a cool-looking and pretty HD show (the set though, not Lopez himself!
) and then you have this tin-sounding 'echoey' audio that feels straight out of cable access. Not cool TBS (or Time Warner Cable, whoever is screwing the sound before it reaches my 747i Olevia). What Lopez lacks in polish and quality jokes (quite a few of them landed with deafening thuds!) so far he's compensating for with energy. George looks like he's having fun and wants to be there (he feeds off of his so-far adoring audience), but how long can he put up a nightly stand-up variety/interview/musical act without the quality and energy suffering though? Time will tell but so far so good for me, and this coming from someone that wasn't (and still isn't) a fan of the man. |

TBS is probably employing some sort of fancy audio processor to mangle everything that comes in to be output in 5.1 at a consistent volume. Do it right and it lights the DD5.1 light and keeps your viewers from complaining about wild swings in audio levels; do it wrong and it maps the sound to all speakers and kills the dynamic range; do it really wrong and the channels are out of phase with each other and you get a hollow or echoing sound.

Watching it as I post this and its my first viewing of it. Agreed about the set. His interviewing skills... meh. He seems to cut off the guest a lot. Liked his monologue but it's a lot of the same material he's used in his stand up shows. What I find a bit strange is that the HD feed is on at 8 PM when the SD is on at 11PM.

I watched the opening monologue of the first show. George Lopez is funny, but he seems more interested in highlighting his heritage than simply hosting his show. Congrats on his success; kudos to his cultural pride; but if he makes that the focus, the show will not be as likely to entertain as it will if he plays it more like the talk show it is.

I'm hooked on this show!! The only time I've laughed as hard as I did during tonight's monologue is on the Craig Ferguson show. And he has great first week guests. Larry David and Lisa Lampanelli in one show. <3<3<3
The sound is better tonight.

Was I dreaming or did the TBS censors allow the S-word to go unbleeped last night during George's interview with Lisa Lampanelli? No fallout can come out of this since this is cable and out of FCC jurisdiction, but it's odd that every other English profanity Lopez and his guests uttered got bleeped except George saying s***. And that skit about English censors not bleeping Spanish profanity because they don't understand the language was so dead-on.
As a bilingual person it is refreshing to hear comedy with Spanish curse words untouched, something we can't get from the FCC-watched Univision and Telemundo OTA affiliates. I love politically incorrect humor and Lampanelli was willing to tag along with George as they both took the PI ball and ran with it. "George Lopez" is must DVR now in my household after only a week. Hope they can keep the quality going a few weeks from now when Carrot Top and a Kardashian sister are the only talent they'll be able to book for a Wednesday show. ![]() |

No, you heard that right. I noticed it right away.
I don't know if I have ever heard that on TBS but I recently heard it on FX shows (Sons Of Anarchy and I think they have used the word on Breaking bad too). Good, I'm glad they're relaxing the language rules. Hopefully next they'll be allowed to show naked breasts after certain hours like they do in Europe. Nope, on second thought we're still far too conservative for that to happen for a while, if ever. |

Reminds me of Chevy Chase's brief talk show.
George is going to have to grow in his interviewing skills and rely less on just being Mexican to survive. I'm surprised that the producers didn't work with George more on this aspect of his performance before the show went on the air. Being an underdog is something that people support but if the only reason for the show is that you are an underdog, it smacks of affirmative action. People are less supportive of that. |

Tonight(11/16) one of Lopez's monologue featured the word "****" uncensored. I'd like to give a big thumbs up to TBS for taking advantage of the special privileges cable has that network TV doesn't.
Edit: Too bad I didn't just post this comment on CABLE!!!! ![]()
