Id anyone has seen my posts you will realise that I am in an unfortunate situation whereby my trusty Sony SXRD 60" XBR1 has finally died and therefore I need to find a replacement. What sucks is that this is on the cusp or in some cases before the 09' models are out.
I have been considering either the Panny 58" 800u Plasma or the new 09 Sony V5100. With the Sony being so new I cannot find any reviews or comments so I am posting this thread to see if anyone has got their hands on one of these units yet and get their feedback.
I really want to be as close (size wise) to what I have today but feel it is now cost prohibitive.

For the American's here (I'm assuming Gerga's american), does the switch to all digital cable mean that the cable going through the wall is digital cable and you don't need a cable box to receive digital cable? I'm asking because I'm from Canada and without a digital cable box, plugging the cable from the wall to a tv will only transmit an analog signal.
If I may, let me add to your confusion. First, all cable feeds are zipcode specific. Second, I don't know of anyone with total digital out of the wall. The first 20 - 30 channels are normally still analog and probably will continue that way for a few more years. My cable company gave me a DTA since they are going digital (QAM256) for channels above 21. After a year I'm still waiting. The DTA is still in its box. I still receive 70+ analog channels and get 120+ digital channels. A letter sent by my cable company stated that I would need either a cable box, DTA, or a TV with a digital tuner. All my analog channels are disabled by me. All my digital channels are labeled and I make extensive use of the Favorites button. I get CBS, NBC, CW, and QVC in 1080i. I get ABC & Fox in 720p. There are also SD and analog signals from those stations. My basic cable (TNT, USA, A&E, etc.) is 480i. Nearby (8 miles) those basic channels come through in 1080i. That does NOT mean they are HD channels, just that that feed sends its data within an HD signal.
Finally, and you can check your manual, all channels are displayed at the maximum resolution of your TV. That's why you see a warning that you need HD content for a good picture. I can feed my Sony a 200 line VHS tape and it will display it in 1080p: noise, pimples, warts and all.
After trying many settings from cnet to forum members - I contracted dsskid to calibrate my Sony KDL-52V5100. .The outcome was incredible and I'll never rely on websites for calibrations ever again. Thank you very much for the service.. I cant be any happier

@JoeKustra: thanks for the clarification. I don't think us Canadians would get the same thing - plugging in directly to the tv can only get analog channels.

Sorry, but the cable encoding for digital must not be QAM256. That is more strange to me since the last two ATSC/QAM tuners I bought came from Canada. You might try to email your cable provider and ask them how they send out digital cable. Also, if someone has a cable box, get the model & manufacturer and try Google or see if the box has a web site.
Here's a bit of irony. My clock in my bedroom is a Sony, and is "sprung ahead" to daylight savings time an entire day early (leaving me surprised and confused at how long I had slept). Yet another example of the wonderful level of Sony's quality control.
Sorry for being off topic, but I thought of all people, everyone with a v5100 would appreciate this
...for maintaining this forum. Been lurking for a long time and learning a lot of new stuff about my TV. Going to try the firmware update soon. Just wanted to express my gratitude...
JJ, tried to update my 52V5100 with the ER411E228_M046 file and it locked up my TV at Red Standby/Amber pic off stage of the update, just froze the TV up, with the Bravia screen displaying. Bad News. So after at least 5-6 minutes, I took the USB memory stick out, and needed to unplug the TV to get it to turn off. Luckily, the TV accepted the previous update from Sony website, and is working again. Watch out. Too bad, hopefully Sony posts an update officially at some point. From what I saw of the files, 52V_M046.img (a new file) and ex2r.txt dated 12/14/09 are different files. All other files are same as those on Sony website update.
Hey all, first off just want to thank everyone on this forum. I have read all 127 pages and really happy this forum is around.
I was just wondering if anybody has had an issue when switching from live TV to a recorded DVR program where the volume comes in but the picture doesn't. The TV says no input. If I turn the TV off and back on again the picture comes in. Or if I switch input and then back to component 1 the picture comes back. It doesn't happen every time but maybe a few times a week with daily TV watching.
I am running component cables from my Motorola DCT 6416 III into component 1 of the TV because of the sound issues with the HDMI. I can't remember if it happens with HDMI because I switched over to component long ago and haven't switched back.
Overall I am really happy with this TV, but the little quirks (or to some of us big quirks) are annoying.
On a side note, when I took up the issue with the HDMI sound problems with Sony they pretty much told me that it's my cable box causing the problem and to turn off the cable box for a few minutes and back on.
I was wondering if it really is the cable box or if it happens with other HDMI products as well (Xbox PS3, as I don't have one to test it out).
Just wanted to add my thanks to those that pointed out the red flashing firmware fix, seriously you now have a large shrine in my basement
. Not sure why Sony insists on the cloak and dagger approach to customer service but for those still looking I followed siege06nd's post #3085 when calling.
Each person I spoke to insisted they had no record of a more recent firmware, and I had to explain to them that it hadn't been released officially so they hadn't heard of it. Finally 4 or 5 people later I got through to someone that knew what they were doing and 48 hours later I got a usb drive in the mail with my update.
I've sent my update to JJGaucho in case anyone else needs KDL-32S5100.
storm, you have more patience than me. I got to a second person once and then gave up. Good for you for making it work. Agreed, don't know why Sony still hasn't posted the better update. I guess they are just too big to be receptive to customer needs.
Well, I just bought a refurb KDL-46V5100 direct from SonyStyle for $799.
I snagged the unofficial firmware. Hopefully this set will work for me (replacing an older Olevia 42", which has worked admirably well, but, alas, gave up the ghost).
I only need an HD monitor, and run all audio through a surround receiver. So, even if the audio pop problem remains, I should escape that.

Can you guys share the pre and post-calibration reports? I don't need to see the post-calibration settings.
dsskid, if a TV has white balance options in the user menu and no CMS in either user nor service menu, do you still access the service menu for any other reasons?

So out of nowhere, the last couple of days I've been experiencing minor audio drop-outs, and the issue where the only way you can get audio back is by switching to another input, then back to the original. Is buying a Sony soundbar or whatever they're called the only true solution people have found for this issue?

I would consider total audio failure a major problem. I guess you have switched to other inputs with no success (or is your dropout problem only on the TV input?), and that you are using the internal speakers. I get a small audio dropout of under a second when using the optical output on occasion, but it's so rare I blame it on dirty cables or the ABC switch that feeds my JVC receiver. A dropout when switching from Dolby to PCM is beyond my control.
I'd love to hear about a True Solution and why it works.

The way it happens, I turn my tv and uverse box on (connected through HDMI 1), and it gives me picture, but no audio. If I hit the input button, switch any other input device currently plugged in, then immediately go back to HDMI 1, I then get sound through the internal speakers. Something isn't kicking in that should be right when the tv is turned on, but seems to come on when shifting between input devices. Do I have an easy work-around for this issue? Yes. But I shouldn't be having the issue in the first place. I thought when we triumphed in getting a red-flash issue firmware update that I could finally start enjoying this set issue-free, but now this started happening. The v5100's truly are lemons.
Just a quick note for anybody having zoom/stretch issues with this or a similar setup (see title). The Dish receiver can cycle through output modes by pressing the "page up" button on the Dish receiver remote (located in the upper left of the remote). To get a 1:1 pixel image you need to make sure your receiver is not on stretch.
I guess I had originally hit that button at some point during setup and forgot about it. I was losing about 2 - 5% of the image. The logo for USA HD was truncated while watching NCIS re-runs and was driving me crazy. I figured other people might want to know how to fix this.
been stalking this thread for awhile and having the red flashing/audio dropouts. i see that the newest firmware is available and i was curious to the easiest/safest way to update my tv. thanks!
