US Over-The-Air HDTV Networks

ABC HD - broadcasting 720p
ABC broadcasts all of their prime time episodic programming in HDTV and DD 5.1 for the ninth consecutive year in the 2009-2010 TV season. Including Castle and FlashForward, along with existing hits Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Dancing With The Stars, etc. (most reality programming not included). In addition, theatrical movies, and special events like The Oscars and The Tournament of Roses Parade are available are in HDTV. In sports, ESPN On ABC offers the regular season NBA, NBA Playoffs and The Finals, Saturday Night College Football, NASCAR and Chase For The Cup, IndyCar Series including the Indianapolis 500, Championship Figure Skating, horse racing's The Belmont Stakes, NCAA college football BCS series Rose Bowl, and more, in HDTV. In the daytime, Good Morning America, The View and General Hospital are all available in HDTV, with All My Children to go HD in February 2010 and One Life to Live to follow shortly. After primetime, Jimmy Kimmel Live! is available in HD. On the news front, ABC World News with Charles Gibson, Nightline, 20/20, This Week, and ABC World News Now are all available in HDTV. ABC HD is available via antenna in most areas, most Cable, Fiber, IPTV systems, and DirecTV and Dish Network (but not to all subscribers, contact your provider for details). The 10 ABC owned and operated local stations have added a second 720p HD subchannel to their digital stations; Live Well HD. Initial reports say HD quality on the main ABC HD subchannel suffered, and now some stations have switched to 480i.

CBS HD - broadcasting 1080i
For the eleventh consecutive year in 2009-2010, CBS broadcasts all of its prime time episodic programming in HDTV and DD 5.1, including The Good Wife and NCIS: Los Angeles, along with existing hits Survivor, CSI, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Two and a Half Men, etc. (most reality programming not included). In addition, The Young And The Restless daytime drama, The Price Is Right game show, as well as theatrical and original made for TV movies, and special events like The Grammys and Tonys are broadcast in HDTV. CBS Sports in HD includes the US Open Tennis Championship, NCAA Men's Basketball Championship and weekly regular season games, NCAA college football games including weekly SEC games and the SEC Championship, Army-Navy, Sun Bowl and Gator Bowl, PGA Golf including The Masters and PGA Championship, CBS SportsDesk, The NFL Today, The NFL On CBS and AFC Playoffs, Super Bowl XLIV, and more. After primetime, CBS offers Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson in HDTV. CBS News offers CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning in HDTV. Look for select CBS programs in HD VOD. FOX HD - broadcasting 720p
For the sixth consecutive year, FOX offers a majority of their prime time programming in HDTV and DD 5.1 for the 2009-2010 TV season, including Cleveland and Dollhouse, with existing hits The Simpsons, American Idol, House, Fringe, etc. (most reality programming not included). FOX Sports offers HDTV for NASCAR and the Daytona 500, MLB regular season games, MLB Playoffs and The World Series, NFL On FOX, the NFC playoffs, NCAA college football Cotton Bowl. COPS is now available in HD, with Fox News Sunday soon to follow. Some FOX programs, including Kitchen Nightmares, Nanny 911, FOX NFL Sunday, The OT, MLB pregame and post game, are broadcast in Fox Widescreen format (16:9, 480i upconverted to 720p), which looks good, but is not native HDTV. ION HD - broadcasting 720p
For the first time in the 2009-2010 television season, ION offers HDTV, available in the top 20 TV markets, with HD planned for all 60 ION stations around the country. HD programs include original series ‘Durham County’, syndicated Reba, Ghost Whisperer, Boston Legal, and most ION Movies. ION HD is available in many areas via antenna, Cable, Fiber, IPTV, with DBS carriage expected.

In their fourth year of network HD broadcasting, MyNetworkTV is moving to a "programming service model" for 2009-2010, featuring a two-hour block of syndicated Law & Order: Criminal Intent on Monday and The Unit on Wednesday, My Thursday Night Movie, along with WWE Friday Night SmackDown. PBS HD - broadcasting 1080i
PBS has transitioned away from the unique PBS Digital channel, and now offers the same type of HD channel as the other OTA neworks; a mix of HD and SD programming. HD programs include all new episodes of MotorWeek, American Experience, Antiques Roadshow, Great Performances at the Met, History Detectives, Nova, Soundstage, Wired Science, Sesame Street, This Old House Hour, The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, Austin City Limits, and many episodes of Frontline, Nature, Great Performances, and other PBS programs, many with DD5.1. In addition they also offer many SD widescreen programs. PBS HD is available via antenna in most areas, and from most Cable, Fiber, IPTV systems. DirecTV has local PBS HD carriage, in most markets where they offer local HD. Note that most PBS digital stations multicast with three subchannels, which affects HD image quality.

TeleFutura was created to provide a new range of viewing choices for U.S. Hispanics. Telemundo HD - broadcasting 1080i
Telemundo, a leading producer of innovative and high-quality content for Hispanics in the U.S. and around the world, introduced HDTV in April 2009. Telemundo is the first Spanish-language network to offer HD content both at the local and network levels. The first broadcast was the 2009 Billboard Latin Music Awards, after which Telemundo will expand HD content to its prime time novelas, sports broadcasts and specials. HD will initially be available in Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston and Puerto Rico. The remaining O&Os will launch HD programming over the next year.

A new premium movie channel from Paramount, Lionsgate, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The three studios accounted for about 25% of all ticket sales in 2008. Features on Epix will include "Iron Man", "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", "Cloverfield", and marathons featuring James Bond, Saw, The Pink Panther, and the Lionsgate-distributed Tyler Perry pics. In addition to theatrical films, Epix will also offer original series, starting with Tough Trade in 2010, a one-hour drama about a Nashville music dynasty from Showtime "Weeds" creator-exec producer Jenji Kohan. A leader in HD sports television, ESPN HD offers thousands of hours of live sporting events and studio programming each year in HDTV. 100% of NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, MLS, NCAA college football and the National Hot Rod Association are HD. Although not all HD, NCAA college basketball will have the largest amount of HD games for a single sport on ESPN. SportsCenter, NFL Countdown, NFL Monday Night Countdown, NFL Live and Baseball Tonight are all HD. In HD golf, ESPN HD has early round coverage of The Masters and The US Open, and starting in 2010, complete HD coverage of The British Open. Beginning in 2011, ESPN will be the home of college football's BCS Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, and National Championship games. ESPN will use virtual set technology that allows anchors or players in distant locations to appear as holograms on-screen, spring 2010. ESPNEWS, the only 24-hour sports news network, has established itself as an immediate source of sports news and information. It merges ESPN's on-air and online entities to present the ultimate interactive sports news outlet. Programming includes The Hot List, 4 Qtrs, NFL Monday Quarterback, NFL Blitz, The Pulse, College Coaches’ Spotlight. ESPNews HD features an innovative HD sideline graphic, which will wrap around the top left and bottom of the HD screen. The Window Channel
All that pressure to make money off of social media can make you want to chill out in front of a large-screen TV, watching high-definition video of relaxing scenery. That's the premise behind the Window Channel. Based in Edmonds, WA, it provides what executive Jim Wilmer calls an ambient, scenic video and auditory environment, which basically means static, soothing shots from around the world, all shot on location by HD cameras manned by Window Channel staffers and freelancers. Right now the only place to see this is hotels, resorts, and hospitals. Window Channel has a couple of clients right now but that number will grow substantially November 1, thanks to a deal signed with the Hotel Network, which is in more than 1 million upscale hotels and resorts in North America. MOJO HD – broadcasting 1080i
iN Demand's 24/7 HDTV channel, offered a hip look at modern culture, pro and college sports, special events, movies, and general interest programming. Some cable systems also used the MOJO HD channel for local professional sports. MOJO was only available on Cable. MOJO HD will continue to provide some of its programs OnDEMAND and on line. 12/2008.

The Outdoor Channel 2 HD – broadcasting 1080i
The Outdoor Channel 2 HD was "aggressively producing" its own content in HD. It was also acquiring HD programming in the hunting, fishing, rodeo, shooting and motor sports (and related) genres. Converted to The Outdoor Channel HD, mirror of SD channel.

Outdoor Life Network - broadcasting 1080i
Now known as Versus, carrying sports and outdoor oriented programming. Part time HD version, for live events, avaliable on cable on INHD. One of the HD carriers of the NHL. September 2005.

Paramount HDOne Movies - broadcasting 1080i
Paramount Domestic Television introduced the first syndicated movie package available in HDTV. HDOne had 39 titles, including The Godfather I & II, the first six Star Trek movies, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The syndication window ran through the 2004-2005 TV season, with two showings per title, per station.

PBS Digital - broadcasting 1080i
Unlike the other OTA networks, PBS Digital had a unique schedule of programs and documentaries each month in HDTV, many with DD 5.1. In addition they also offered many upconverted widescreen programs. PBS Digital was eliminated in early 2009, as they transitioned to the model used by the other OTA networks; a digital mirror of the analog channel, with HD available on a program by program basis.

Sci Fi - broadcasting 1080i
Changed name to SyFy in July 2009, to have a unique name due to "a search for a "sci-fi show" might not turn up any results for a "Sci Fi show," when we compete in other countries with another network that uses "sci-fi" in its title, where the name Sci Fi and the category "sci-fi" are indistinguishable. ?

Dish and Voom got into a contractual dispute, and Dish dropped Voom, May 2008. Cablevision parent company Rainbow Media finally pulled the plug for all US distribution. January 2009.

The WB – broadcasting 1080i
The WB offered primetime HDTV for the fourth consecutive year in 2005-2006, including Twins, Everwood, Reba, Smallville, and Gilmore Girls in HDTV. Tribune Broadcasting has also offered the annual Tournament of Roses Parade on WB stations. DD 5.1 for select HD programming. Merged with UPN to become The CW, fall 2006.

Caveat: This list is based on reports from viewers, who in turn rely on the stations' own representations. However, some stations that are in this list because they claim HD news do not deliver the minimum of 720p resolution with their news-studio shots, let alone with their location shots. In particular, I'm calling out KMSP in Minneapolis and several other Fox O&O stations.
