If you don't care about 7.1 audio for 5.1 post-HDMI Dolby and DTS formats, then receivers Level 4 and higher are future proof.

so if the onkyo doesn't get to the next level... and I'm not planning on going 7.1, probably ever... what would the onkyo bring to the table?

The only thing that really separates these two is the Audyssey Speaker Calibration, and the ability to decode DTS-MA. If your not worried about that then the 810 will be your best choice.

well, the sony has it's version of calibration with a mic, I'm just going to order it, and if I hate it, I'll return it and eat crow...

I think I'll be upgrading speakers before I upgrade past the 810 tho... blue ray players will need to come down in price(read, CHEAP) before I can justify it.... since most of my movies I watch are on cable, or divx through the xbox media center...
