Arrow Philips BDP 7200 owners thread

Well folks it finally came. The box was a bit thrashed, but it seems fine. I've just started tests on this unit, but here is what I know so far. I loaded Independance Day (I will do a comprehensive post on load times a bit later) I was dying to know if this unit bitsteams DTS HD MA..............Good news it does. See pics below. More to come guys!

Comprehensive times coming.......Independance day took over a minute...Bummer. But no audio or video glitches. Man, I swear the bitstreamed audio sounds better than PCM.......probably not really. It's probably my imagination.

Java Menus

The BD-J menus are flawless.........no stuttering or hiccups. (ID4, Ratatouille, Pirates 1 and 2 were tested) Very smooth. Also some have asked about PQ.....It looks as good or better than the PS3. However, I'm not a good one to ask because I am using a 50" Sony LCD. (1366 x 768) The manual says it does 1080p24. Also one thing I like is the remote has an audio button which will tell you what audio format you are in and allow you to thumb through and change the setting.

Seems comparable to the load times on the BD30 & Denon 2500. Thanks for the info.

SD DVD's

I popped in Revenge of the Sith. It looks very good to me. This weekend I can do some side by side's with the PS3. I have to be honest guys, I'm not the best guy to evaluate SD DVD quality. Maybe someone with a bigger screen can give better info on this. I think it looks great though. One thing, for you guys who like to output your standard DVD's at 480i, the menu gives you the option of doing so.

Is there an option to output the native resolution of the disc (source direct)?

Not sure, but I will check. I'm going to watch an entire movie now to check for audio/video dropouts. EDIT- I watched the entire movie ID4. No issues at all........... it played perfectly. That is good news initially. DTS MA sounded great.

thanks Scoob. this player looks pretty solid. Also, I believe there's already a fw update for it. Philips always had a history of releasing firmwares routinely. Let's hope this trend continues.

Please report if there is a Direct mode that outputs 1080p24 (or 1080p60 for you) and then 480i on SD without changing any settings.

Also can you please test whether it has video on composite when using HDMI, so IE if you are watching a blu ray at 1080p and you hook up composite, will it have video like the BD30 or Sony S1?

Thanks and enjoy your new player.

After fiddling around and reading the owners manual, I don't think there is "direct mode" What I do know is that in the menu setting "HDMI video output" there is a 1080p/fps setting. If you turn it to OFF, you get 60fps. If you turn it to ON, you get 1080p24 automatically if if 1) the frame rate of the source is 1080p24 2) HDMI video resolution is set to 1080p and 3) if your TV supports 24fps output. (That from the owners manual) As far as the 480i setting I am confused from reading the owners manual. I think what I said a few posts earlier was incorrect. It says in the owners manual that if "480p output is not available, then 480i will be output" But it also says that "when an HDMI cable is connected, only 480i and the resolution selected in the HDMI video output will be available. Clear as mud?

Tested this out and the answer is yes it does output video from composite at the same time. Jon, would it be inappropriate to sticky this as it may be helpful to folks as players start to trickle in?

A couple more items. I said earlier that ON to tray opening was about 20 seconds. Well I found out that if the machine is off and you push the tray open button it turns the unit on, and the tray opens at 17 seconds! Also, I played Cars in it's entirety, it worked flawlessly. This machine cranks through the java menus. Also, I threw is a few audio CD's and they also worked great....no issues at all. It's too bad I don't have any Divx material or MP3 DVD's, I would test those out as well.

So is this a Profile 1.1 player, then, or a really fast 1.0 player?

Ah, okay, thanks.

What's the build construction like, for what that's worth?

I don't have any of those, but I'll try to get my hands on I am Legend. BTW, what is RE:A?

Good to know, thanks for that.

Has there been any word on what chip Philips is using in this player?
Broadcom, Sigma, UniPhier?

I went out to Hollywood video to rent those three titles....The only one I could get my hands on is I am Legend. They don't have either of the other three. Anyhoo, I put in I am Legend and bitstreamed Dolby True HD without any lockups or stutters. So far so good. It was also brought to my attention that there is already a firmware update for this player. I checked my machine for the firmware version and sure enough the one on the website is a newer version than mine. I'm almost afraid to download it as my machine hasn't even blinked. One question for the rest of you. Since Sam's Club is selling this for 334.00, do you guys think that everyone else will still sell it at 399.00?

Circuit City is still listing it for $399.99 as of now (as a pre-order item, arrival 5/7)...apart from Sam's, the next cheapest is around $379 online. Engadget's original article about the BDP7200 says it was supposed to have an MSRP of $349.99, but Philips' own CES press release said $399.99. I'm assuming Engadget was misinformed, or Philips blinked at the last second, and we'll probably be stuck at the $399.99 price point for a while...though that doesn't explain Sam's pricing, does it? Asleep at the wheel?
