GTA4 Freeze your PS3?

Ok so...within the first 30 mins of gameplay I've had to hard boot my ps3 three times because of GTA4. Disc is clean. Never had problems with any other game locking me up. Any ideas?

Seems like they are getting lots of calls about freezing. Reminds me of Assassins Creed supposedly freezing PS3's. I never had it freeze on me though (AC), don't have GTA yet.

Perhaps you should delete the install file and re-do?

I've been playing since 12:15 CST and it's 3:30 (YAWN). No freezing here with a 60GB (bought mine last May).

I've got a launch 60GB and haven't had any issues. Those that are getting freezes, are you using a replacement hard drive?

Wow I can't believe so many people already had problems. Seems like too many to be a conspiracy. I'm surprised none of the reviewers noticed it?

Hopefully I don't have the issue!!

Rumors from those links indicate Gamestop may have gotten a bad batch of copies. Just a rumor but better than nothing ;P

I had it freeze once when I tried launching the online for the first time, 40GB here. Restarted the PS3, no problems after that.

Well, I bought my copy last night at GameStop, and I played for about 30 minutes last night, and then for an hour this morning with no problems. Done a few missions, bought some clothes and gone on a bowling date.

And, this was on a 60GB purchased in January, 2007.

Sorry to hear there are problems for some people. FWIW, I never had problems with Assassin's Creed, either.

My copy started freezing while I was on the second mission, driving Roman back to his office.
I'm not sure how valid this is, or even if it makes sense, but I disconnected my PS3 from the network and took the wires out. Since then it's been working fine.

PS3 60gb bought in March 2007. GTAIV purchased at a random store in Toronto.

Rockstar address GTA IV 'freezes'
(On the PS3)
by Luke Guttridge
29 april 2008
With anecdotal evidence from internet forums suggesting that Grand Theft Auto IV might be suffering from intermittent crashes on both launch platforms, Rockstar have initially offered advice for PS3 players.

Forumites have reported crashes and freezes following the game's intro-sequence, and the publisher say that if this happens you should delete your game data and reinstall GTA IV.

Apparently, the problem is more prevalent on the earlier 60GB model console.

How widespread this problem is remains unclear, given the entirely unrepresentative nature of online communities.

I have a launch PS3 60gb (well cared for) and had no issue installing or playing for about 45 minutes.

For the record only freezes I have ever had were software related with the autosave on NHL08(known issue). Other than that I have had no issues.

Well, I have a 40GB 2nd gen PS3, and upgraded that to a Toshiba 160GB HDD. Do you think that would be significant as far as anything? I mean, I'm quite sure that this would probably lead to a pretty good experience. Hmm... Hopefully Amazon's copies are tested to keep from freezing during gameplay.

This thread has far more traffic and the problem looks pretty rare.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=288359

It is also happening to 360 owners.

Edit: This list of people effected is like a dozen out of nearly 300 replies.

There's an apparent fix out there. Worth giving it a shot. I have a launch 60gb and have had no freezing issues yet.

GTA IV freezing on start up? Panic not, 60gb PS3 owners...
By Phil May - 29 Apr 08
Reports are currently circulating describing a glitch with GTA IV on certain PS3s

Initial reports seem to suggest that the 60GB launch models are most affected by the glitch but don't worry, there's a very simple solution that'll help you get back on the road in no time at all.

1) Delete ALL GTA IV game data, including the pre-install and any game saves (if you've got that far)

2) Update your console to the latest version of the firmware (if you haven't already done so).

3) Shut your console down (till you get the red shutdown light), Power off using the rocker switch at the back, then power back up, start your console up and re-install GTA IV as before.

4) You should now find the game starts once the cut scene has finished / is skipped.

If this doesn't work, then your only option is to contact Rockstar directly using the customer service number in the back of the manual. So far following the above steps seems to universally cure this freezing problem but in the event of a suspect disk or a PS3 fault, your best bet is to contact either Rockstar or Sony respectively

^ How's that a fix though? It's just like reinstalling a program, only making sure your firmware is up to date. The process seems to be exactly the same if you were to play it the very first time.

It could have something to do with old firmwares corrupting game data, or not having the libraries most recently used in the game.

Or just corrupt file transfer period.

It's worth a try, it's fixed many a peoples issue before with other games and issues.
