Big Grin Toshiba 42RV530U or Samsung LN40A530

I have been looking around and I have narrowed my selection down to two sets. I plan on going and purchasing one or the other tomorrow, and I know the manager so I will buy either at cost and not much price difference for me between the two. In the store they are sitting side by side and each has it's up and downs. The Toshiba seems to have more color and deeper blacks and definately looks noticably bigger even though it is only 2 inches, while the Samsung is definately crazy bright and has mad contast and detail. Overall though they really look extremely similar which is why I'm having such a tough time deciding, I mean there are slight differences, but absolutely nothing substantial. Personally I think the Toshiba frame and overall look of the tv is more pleasing to eye and it is 100 dollars more than the Sammy, but at the price of the tv's this doesn't really make any difference to me. Again the tv's I'm deciding between are the Samsung LN40A530 and the Toshiba 42RV530U. Whichever I buy will be hooked up to Pioneer surround sound, a Pioneer 1080P unconverting dvd player and a Xbox360 all at 1080P, and eventually Blu-Ray to come. What are your opinions as I know it can be tough to tell in the store since their feed isn't exactly the highest quality? I just want the overall best looking and performing tv out of the two because I plan on having it for a very long time

thats funny u ask the same question i was gonna post, u really cant see the difference with the store models, as most of em have been tweaked by many customers, but from what i read about the rv530 seems pretty cool for the price , i wish samsung made 42's
i like the thinner bezel too

I had a 530 for a little while, but returned it. I did not like that the blacks looked green when you increased the brightness or looked off-angle.

Also, SD handling wasn't very good.

I did not look at the samsung, but I would lean toward that one.

Interesting thread... I am also considering these two TV's.

Which is better for games? Samsung has a faster pixel response (5ms Vs. 8ms) will this be noticeable?

I have the Sony KDL-40V4100 but I want to return it for something less expensive. I will be using it mostly for PS3 gaming and HDTV, very little movie watching.

Response Time

Actually, Toshiba also has a 5 ms response time for the 530 series. I see very little motion blur on my 32rv530. Toshiba US does not give out very accurate information. Go to the Canadian website for better info. I think there is a pretty good chance that at least some of the panels in the 530 series are made by Samsung, but I'm not too sure about the 42rv530 since Sammy does not make that size for their own lcds.

I compared the Toshiba RV530 and the Samsung A530 the other day at CC. I was able to adjust all the settings on the Toshiba but I could not get the color to look "right". All the otner TV's around the RV530U had much better reds. the RV530U seemed washed out.

I ended up buying the Samsung A530 and so far its great! Well except for the part where the picture stops working and I have to turn the TV off and back on again! Oh well, at least I can return it... maybe Ill get one that works the second time!

Yeah I think Toshiba used LG panels which are known for the washed out colors, and bad viewing angles. Hopefully the Sammy treats you right, its a good set.

Did you ever pick a set? What was the result? I'm leaning toward the Toshiba, but if I get a better PQ with the Sammy, I'll give up the two inches.

Cool

Ya I ended up going with the Sammy and I'm really happy with it. Incredible picture and I don't regret losing 2 inches that the Toshiba offered. DVD's look great, my 360 looks sick and all motion is pretty smooth for an affordable 60hz tv. I also picked up a Toshiba A30 HD-DVD player for $149 and Planet Earth and other HD-DVD's look amazing. Haven't tried Blu-ray yet, because I'm gonna wait another year for all the new players to come out, and prices to drop a bit more. For the mean time I will be picking up HD-DVD's for 10 bucks a pop... Nuff said!

my tv has the corner bleeding problem also but it is only noticable when the screen is really dark like swithing between inputs. other than that the tv is perfect, play gran tursimo 5 on it and you will be blown away

I also went with the Samsung LN40A530 and am happier than a pig in crap. Great tv.

Welcome to the forum!Actually don't be confused when ever you are going to buy lcd hdtv.It totally depends upon your budget and customized to your room. But I'm not recommend you to buy samsung but qualities are very good. The picture quality is fantastic and one advantage of this TV over the LN40A550 ,the sound is WAY better on this TV and adjusting the back-lighting to accommodate YOUR rooms lighting. you can use Warm 1 setting for blu-ray/DVD movies and normal/standard(with low dynamic contrast on) setting for regular HDTV viewing. PS3 games look great too(game mode) .
