Anyone buy Patton on BD?

I got it on Tuesday and I've watched it twice already. Great looking effort from FOX, IMO. Pure eye candy, IMO.

The best part is that it's a GREAT movie too....the best of both worlds!

FWIW, here's a review thread:

You know, it's cliche to say watching a movie in HD is like watching it for the first time, but in this case, for me, it really is true.

I've seen it countless times, but this presentation really brings across the visual nature of this movie. I always considered it an epic movie for it's content but this presentation is visually epic as well. You can tell from watching that this was the way the movie was meant to be seen.

The palaces, etc.., that Patton stays in along the way, convey a visual grandness that suits the whole film.

Just my opinion though...I'm interested to see what others who have experience with this film think about this BD presentation.

I just ordered it the day - looking forward to it. I'm curious how badly its been DNR'd as I'm told it doesn't have a filmlike look to it such as many other BDs.

After hearing about the DNR there's no way in hell I'm buying this. Seriously if DNR becomes the norm for BD I think I'll abandon the format.

I already posted a note about this film in the review section. This is a great film which has been masterfully restored on blu ray. The soundtrack is also a delight. Anyone who has interest in this film owes it to themselves to buy this BD version and enjoy every delicious moment.

It is not perfect...and why would anyone think a restored 1970 film would be perfect? But, the engineers did a great job restoring this film (and the soundtrack) so a new generation can enjoy it.

Reviews seem to be universally good, even with DNR. Guess people aren't bothered by it? I think DNR is more bothersome than EE. I'd rather see the ocasional outline than a waxed over look...though I'd prefer neither.

Patton is heavily DNR-ed. Don't buy it.
Wait for the GRAIN fest re-issue by FOX in 2040.

Even if Motion Picture Archivists say it's DNR-ed the PQ still looks excellent for a 38 year catalog title. The DNR is nowhere in the league of PL, Twister or Face/Off.

Could you provide more on information on this restoration you are talking about? I was unaware that Patton had been restored or needed to be restored.

I'm not the expert on this, but if you read the AVS Forum review, there's a poster who mentions that Patton was originally filmed on 65mm film and therefore does not have film grain. I don't think this film was DNR'd to remove grain. As far as I'm concerned it looks amazing!

It is very rare Robert Harris intervenes on a thread for a review on HDD and post about it. That speaks volumes. This may look good although with a big BUT!!!

Umm, 65mm has grain too. Patton is DNR'd, end of story. Harris says so, he should probably know, and if you look at the screenshots from the blu-ray.com review, even though they're downscaled to 720p you can clearly see there is not a single imperfection or grain to be seen, and all the faces are a bit waxy and completely spotless.

Bottom line is, it will look very good to most people, but it certainly doesn't look like film, and according to Harris, there's a significant amount of detail loss as well.

My DNR hit list

1) Face/Off
2) Pan's Labyrinth
3) Twister vs Untouchables (Tie) http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...er_blu-ray.htm
4) Patton
5) Shining

I would say even highly praised Shining is mildly DNR-ed.

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDRe...20PDVD_008.jpg

The BD is from the remastered version.

Even "Before the Knows You are Dead" has waxy faces.

I thought The Shining looked a bit too smooth as well.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead was shot on HDCAM though.

It seems Warner and Newline DNR's plenty of titles. I watched Superman: The Movie the other night and the scenes inside the Daily Planet have plenty of DNR. Fortunately, the rest of the movie doesn't seem to really have the issue.

I thought the DNR in Pan L is much more minor than Face Off. I'm surprised you have then ranked so closely. I haven't watched the Untouchables yet.

I think the UK Pan L HD DVD doesn't have the DNR if you want to get a better copy. I wouldn't mind picking it up, so if you find a good price let me know.

I object to this. The new generation should instead adapt, widen their views and learn to appreciate things that might be outside their little comfort bubble of pre-conceived ideas. I know I did.

If you have to modify a work of art to appeal to a new crowd that only speaks against its timelessness. If the new generation refuses to read Crime and Punishment, you might try to do a modern remake with similar thematic elements, you don't commission a new translation, overriding the old one, where everyone speaks like 14-year-old girls on MSN.

does that BD only have a standard DD track? that wouldn't be a worthy trade-off IMO over the US BD DTS-MA 7.1
I assume the HD DVD is the same, only DD, now that I look at the specs

The faces in TWISTER are so scrubbed of detail it's frightening. What a POS.

OK, I see Robert Harris is speaking on this issue (Patton). How sad that this is the way it will be for likely all time.

I am pretty confident that even the U.K HD DVD was slightly DNR-ed.

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=66409

The best version of PL for PQ is the U.K BD which unfortunately wasn't reviewed by anyone.

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=BZZDOqERyuU
http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=6AjyEbP0zKE

Please keep in mind that the extras won't play in NTSC only equipments.

DD AC 640 Kbps ONLY.
