Optimum Home Entertainment to indicated to DVD Times that all future BD releases will be Region B. What they end up being remains to be seen, but that little tidbit, which I discovered today, has seriously put a damper on my enthusiasm for these releases.

OK, I asked a few questions and the only relevant information I received is that "From now on all our titles will be Region B".

I know I'll be flamed for this, but this is exactly why I didn't want BD to win the format war. I'd have bought all of the John Carpenter titles I don't have already. I own The Fog (HD DVD), The Thing (HD DVD), and Halloween (BD). I want many of the others - guess I'll have to wait for domestic releases. I'm sure they'll lose some sales, but I doubt they care. Hopefully TARTAN and NO SHAME won't do the same. Then again, maybe there will be region free BD players like there are DVD players. Hopefully.

So there's a BD region hack for the LG combo? Fuzzzzz. Any standalone BD players with hacks? I'm guessing the extras are still 576p?

I'm glad to see these are getting a release, even if I have to wait for a domestic release (due to region coding), because a foreign release USUALLY means a domestic release is less than 6 months away. I have to wonder how an older / lower budget movie like "They Live" will benefit from a BD release? That being said....one of my all time fav. movies!

Yep there is a BD region hack for the LG Combo. You cannot make it region free but you can switch back and forth between the different regions. Take a look at the thread for it.

This sucks, but it doesn't surprise me. Other UK releases have been region coded, like The Crow. I agree with others in that this is why I miss HD DVD imports.

HALLOWEEN has a foreign release? Is it all screwed up color wise like the Anchor Bay BD? Does it have raised pitch in the sound?

The UK disc is released by Anchor Bay. As for raised pitch, the only discs I know of, were the early Studio Canal HD DVD titles and Death Sentence which runs at 50hz,(like PAL speedup).

No mention of the original mono soundtrack being included for this film. Hopefully, it will be included, though nothing is certain until the disc hits the streets.

I wonder if THE FOG will have a better transfer than what they did on HD DVD. That disc was completely underwhelming. It looked like it had SD resolution to it. I guess I'd have to pass either way, unless there's a region B hack for the PS3.

I'm hoping it retains it's grain structure as that is where the detail is and The Fog always had visible grain so i hope its still there.

Poop, had these in my Amazon UK wish list.

Funny how almost no titles this old had the code when the war was under way, now it's cropping up all over.

Guess we gotta hope for Universal and MGM to put these out here.

Some impressions on the UK Escape From New York Blu-Ray from another forum-

Quote:
I just watched Escape From New York on Blu-ray and was really impressed - the transfer is so much better than I expected it would be! At some points it looked like a new film. The audio is DTS-HD MA and not DD as mentioned earlier......

They Live has been pushed back to September. As if I haven't got enough to buy that month...

I'm from the UK but won't be able to buy them if they're region coded since i have an American Playstation 3.

Region coding is just wrong on catalogue titles.

So the region coding is confirmed? HD-DVD sure as heck had one point up over BD.

* Return to Escape from New York (23 mins)
* New and exclusive John Carpenter interview (31 mins)
* 3 x original trailers
* Snakes Crime (deleted original intro)
* Commentary with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell

The Fog - The Blu-ray is a dual-layer barebones release coded for Regions A and B with the film presented in 1080P 2.35:1 Widescreen (VC1) with English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The disc was previously announced with extras - please note Optimum have informed us these will no longer be included.
They sure love updating that news page.

If it's official that it will work on American players, I'm sold; I love Escape From New York. I've seen it on HDNET a couple of times and it looks quite a bit better than the 2 Disc Special Edition DVD. As long as the Blu-ray version is on par with that HD broadcast, I'll be a happy man.

If that's true, then this is really a disappointment. I really want 'Escape' and 'They Live'...
