Film Reference and Analysis
The Film Has Already Been Made - Reproduce it As far as this thread goes it does not matter if the film has grain or has a soft look or has a dark and stylistic look which would normally see such films being given low marks by those who want eye candy but what matters is that the film has not suffered excessive DNR or excessive EE or other such issues related to film transfers. You will find eye candy titles here but you will also find many great films which have been under appreciated because of the cinematography choices made at the time of filming. If you think a film should be on this list then nominate it. All nominations are welcome from everyone and you can also negative or critique any film on this list and give your reason why a film either deserves to be here or should not be here. Films will either go straight onto the minor/medium/major issues list or be placed on the nomination/digital camera list. Two nominations are required for a place on the main list and three negatives will see a film removed from the list or placed on the minor issues list.

The titles of this thread, and the original tier thread may be confusing.
Recommend to change the tier thread title to "BR Demo Material Thread", and this thread title to something which refects the rankings based on the accuracy of the transfer, directors intent. |

As I mentioned in the "Longest Day" thread, I think the critical concept is accuracy. How accurately does the BD reproduce the source material?
Obviously, when discussing archival film-restoration projects, one must either make inferences or rely on expert sources; most of us will not have seen the original source material in its pristine state, 30 or 50 or 70 years ago, or remember it accurately if we did. But it's not that hard to assess if you know what properly projected film actually looks like. Compare Patton to The Sand Pebbles, and it's easy to judge which one looks more like a beautifully restored print being correctly projected in a well-maintained theater. But the same standard can be applied to current films, although here one comes up against the sorry truth that there are very few well-maintained theaters that maintain correct projection standards. If we need a new thread, I suggest perhaps its purtpose should simply be to rank BDs on the basis of how accurately we believe they reproduce the original look of the material.

Don't we have some industry insiders here that can provide comparison shots of a movie with DNR and the same movie without DNR - an unofficial clip or something.
And as for a thread rating blu-rays on "intent"... unless the director is here to tell us, we don't know squat about what was intended. For that matter unless we have access to the master, we don't even know how to judge if a blu-ray is true to the master. I'm all for educating people on grain and film making, but until you can give some side by side comparisons, I think the masses are going to prefer the video-like feel. |

This is a cool idea, but who or how do we determine what something was supposed to look like? Many older films have not been seen in the theater in years.... does everyone REALLY remember how the film looked grain-wise and such? That seems like a reach to me.
Its too bad that databases like IMDB dont have theatrical picture quality information. Im serious....they could have entries like: Heavy grain film-stock used, Shot on Panavision with minimal grain, Color pallette tilted towards blue, Diffused lighting used for many scenes, etc, etc. That would really clear up many of these debates. All too often, the newbies simply hate any transfer that doesnt look like "I, Robot" and the old-school film geeks seem to spare/excuse every bad transfer with the "its supposed to be grainy and look like crap" argument. ![]() Oy Vey. |

I feel that I should mention Dirty Harry, given it's incredibly film like appearance and grain retention. I'm not sure about the colors however, they look heavily pumped up in certain areas.

However, you'll need a few things that are hard to come by in order to make a comprehensive list: people with first or second hand knowledge of what the director's intent is. And #2, a method for distinguishing what makes one movie "more" true to the director's intent than another. The only other scope I could see for a thread like this is an artistic style discussion thread. Not a tier thread with rankings, so to speak. Rather a thread that focuses on the more stylized films out there and the effect it has (and what it's going for) on the movie's transfer to blu-ray. Including, but not limited to, the type of cameras used, lenses, film stock, etc etc etc. My 2 cents. Brandon |

2001 or Babel or both?
I have seen both in the theater and will say that both were very accurate representations of what was presented. As far as Edge Enhancement goes, I cannot say for sure as I did not oversee the transfer. I do know that 70mm is a lot sharper and even more detailed than what most people are accustomed to viewing.
