Exclamation Gangs Of New York comparison *PIX*

Quality control? Non. Nada. Zilch. No re-mastering involved even tough it desperately needs one. The DVD version is well known to be one of the worst ever released for a major film. I don't think the studio is even aware of this even after all this time. What we are seeing now is just the same Edge Enhancement, the same excessive Digital Noise Reduction (look at the faces of the actors. Its smeared pink!), the same dirty and ugly transfer but at glorious 1080p!

Exce-fraking-lent!

It has been over two years. Does the studio think we are stupid? Not to notice? Common sense should dictate that there will be no more Original release Filth Element and Traffic hack jobs. Not all forums cater to the stupid and ignorant who never ever calibrate their small viewing set, watch them in "torch or dynamic" mode, drinking Kool-Aid and complain "Why is it too grainy?"

My advice is do not touch it, don't look at it, don't buy it, don't rent it. Because if you do its ok for the studios to do this and they can get away with it. Still thinking I'm way too harsh? Imagine Lord of the Rings with the same amount of EE and DNR applied. Get my point?

These recent days I have been getting e-mails and PMs from people accusing me of being a "Blu-ray hater" (sic) because of these threads. Nevermind the fact that I posted excellent Blu-ray titles like The Sand Pebbles, The Professionals, Passage To India, The Seventh Seal and Cloverfield recently of which I recommend all of them as worth buying. Even members who share the same convictions as I do is being called "over dramatic". These people calling us "fanboys" are just ignorant response (or lack thereof) to something they can't possibly understand. Its passion for film. Passion for art. Its something we want to experience. Its the sort of thing no explosion, CGI creature and "3D POP" can completely substitute.

And to Robert Harris, even tough I disagree with you regarding the transfer of that one title, I'm with you protesting the excessive DNR and EE problem plaguing some Blu-ray releases. There may be some innuendo of you having an "agenda against the format" from other forums, I want to say is if the "agenda" is stopping this revisionist crap on Blu-ray then so be it.

Note: The DVD versions are NOT the benchmark here anymore. Its how the movie is faithfully transferred to the disc.

if you want, we can include the German (DVD) WMV-HD 720p that was released 3 years ago, and i'm sure the new BR from Germany will be using the same master as it used for the WMV HD.

An utter disgrace that will not be recalled or fixed unless Scorsese himself is made aware and believe me, he isn't.

ugh... this is bad bad bad.....

no BR reviewer out there should give this transfer a good rating....

a big production movie that is merely 4 years old should never look like this !!!!

Yuck. At least the colors are better?

Also, the BD includes more pic info on all sides, seemingly beyond the left and right edges of the frames...

I'm just waiting for someone with capture ability to receive their copy of the French version, which is rumored to be much, much better.

Thanks for confirming all our worst suspicions on this title, Xylon. I can't imagine how anyone would be content with the Blu-ray.

I noticed that everyone at the battle is still wearing their force fields. Bleah. Disney should be ashamed.

Unless the French blew all the reviews like the majority of the critics did.

I still think everyone should email disney about this. IMO - that POTC thing was hardly noticeable(unless you looked for it). On the other hand this is the 2nd worst looking BD ever. It stings more because it's such a good movie.

There's so much EE that the color reproduction doesn't look as good because of the halos. Ughh.

Well, I'm going to cling to the hope that there's a better transfer out there until someone here at AVS can actually show it to us. If the work has already been essentially done overseas than it seems to me that replacement discs would be shipped out a lot quicker assuming that Disney gets the message on this release.

edit: I normally don't bother but in this case, I'm actually willing to send an email or three. Who exactly should be contacted at Disney WRT this issue?

Ah yes, my favorite defense That and the "everybody is blowing it out of proportion" crowd.

Anybody else who bought this fill out a complaint form on BVHE's site? I submitted mine on Tuesday.

I'm sorry but that second cap is just so bad it's hilarious. It looks like they filmed the crowd against a white greenscreen, and then let Paul the Intern cut it out from the frames using the lasso tool before pasting it onto the background.

What a disgrace. The 'better than DVD' jab is misplaced though, wrong categories. It retains what made the DVD garbage and is no better where it counts. Just higher res garbage.

Christ on a bike, what a ****ed up transfer. It's been hobbled from day one and I'm disgusted that Disney have trotted it back out again for the Blu-ray.

I read a review or another thread or something stating that this BD was terrible so I canceled my pre-order. Now looking at these pictures that Xylon posted (keep up the good work by the way) it doesn't look nearly as bad as I had imagined it would look. That said, I'm glad I canceled my pre-order. The EE is just atrocious.
