Copying this from the new thread I presumptiously started:

I'm waiting on the slow boat from Japan to deliver my Power-Bought 05FD, and would like to read more from the likes of Ruined about how everything is going with the 51FD.

I am particularly interested in the analog-out decoding of the lossless audio formats, and how everything is sounding without the benefit of distance settings and advanced BM.

I am also surprised, as many others are, that there is no FW update available online for these; it would seem very 20th-Century not to have this available (unless Pioneer is waiting fo the Beta-Testers, I mean First-Users, to report enough problems to make the new FW obsolete...)

As a 6010 owner, what would be my optimum video hookup -- component or HDMI, with either the 51 or the 05?

I'm assuming I should simply use the processor in the 6010, versus either of these video processor's?

I understand the 05 has some sort of enhanced (?) processing of some sort for its component output, yet I should still stick with the 6010's processor, no?

As a general 05 question, though, if it's true the 05's component video processing is enhanced in some way, is that output going to be superior to its HDMI video performance?

I dunno if this is relative, but I'll be transmitting audio via the variable outputs to my pre/pro.

Conclusion
I am very satisfied with this player, it kicks butt in both video and audio quality and is very responsive in menus!

I have .80a and had no problems yesterday with Top Gun. I got it from amazon.com, which shipped it out on July 28, the day before it was allegedly available.

Top Gun works fine in 0.80a, as does Dragon' Lair and Space Ace. But they all are broken in v1.0. My posts are regarding the shipping firmware not beta.

On the other hand, most of the broken movies in 0.80a (there are a lot) work fine in v1.0.

has anybody here connected this to a projector yet. it's not detecting my projector as 1080i compliant and so it always select 720x480 during power up. once i manually switch it to 1080i, it will say its incompatible and asks whether to proceed or not. but still works even if i continue. im hoping it's just because of the .80a firmware.

0.80a was buggy with my dtc-9.8 Reon detection as well, v1.0 fixed all the issues.

I think I'm going to have to continue using my trusty Oppo for DVD. I can't imagine having to go back to 3 second layer changes and long loading times. It seems so late 90's/early 2000. I had a couple of Pioneer DVD players years ago that were slower than the rest as well. Hopefully a fimeware upgrade can tweak this a bit but for now I'll only be interested in this player for BD.

Yikes! Three seconds? That's kind of ridiculous. I thought that with all the intensive requirements to process HD audio and video, getting through the SD basics would be a piece of cake. Maybe the next FW update will fix it.

I did get my new 51 (beta FW) hooked up to my 5080 late last night. Briefly popped in POTC-DMC to check out the video. Still drooling.

(sadly, Batman Begins didn't seem to want to work, but I'm hoping when I get the 1.0 FW, it'll fix that)

Chris Walker - a Pioneer rep who knows the most about these players - confirmed the 0.80a "demo units" and v1.0 retail units are 100% identical hardware wise, only difference is the firmware. If you read otherwise (i.e. kingair's post) it is most definitely misinformation. An 0.80a unit upgraded to v1.0 firmware is 100% identical to a v1.0 retail unit.

Most definitely the 51FD's hardware is capable of seamless layer changes on DVD. But whether they will ever devote any resources to actually making that happen in future firmware is another story.

I have the 6010 as well and I plan to use HDMI to my Pio 94 AVR, for your situation I would still use HDMI to one of the 4 HDMI inputs on the 6010 for video (I don't think there is any real difference in video quality between component and HDMI, but HDMI is just less cable clutter) for audio you are going to use analog from the 05 to your pre/pro?

Theoretically:

(BEST) 51FD/05FD HDMI > 05FD Component > 51FD Component

how much of a difference is truly noticable in reality between the 3 is another story that depends on the quality of your TV's ADC circuit.

I am an official owner now! Picked up my BPD-51FD at the Pioneer Store in South Coast plaza Friday evening (August 8). Per Olga, the BPD-05FD will be in the store in 10 days.
They all have the newest firmware (NOT DEMO).
BTW, the SC-07 is in stock and SC-05 will be in at the end of the month.
Anyway, unpacked my player, wow, it's a beautiful piece of machinery!
Hooked up to my Kuro PRO-100FD. The first disc I played was National Treasure.. The PQ was fantastic.

I want to thank Ruin, Robert from VE and all the others, I would not have bought this without your deligent testing and reporting. Thank you!

Dispite the naysayers in the other threads, I don't think anyone will be dissapointed in this unit, either in quality or performance. I am very happy.

Unfortunately, I don't have the same discs.. I have National Treasure2, Resident Evil (last one), I am Legend, and Pirates of the Carribean (3rd one).. have played all but Pirates...
I have experienced NO hangups, and loading averages about 18-20 seconds. Sorry, I don't have more precise information, truthfully, I've waited so long, I'm just relishing/enjoying the quality of the system.

Picked up the 51 this weekend from BB, and of course it has the demo firmware. Ordred the updated disc and phone rep seemed to know about the need for the unit to be updated.

Question for Ruined and others who have updated their 51's:

Does the new update affect any of the remote functions/features?

Any idea on when you'll be able to walk into a Best Buy, or visit their website, and purchase this player? I know the website currently doesn't list it. Also, I notice pioneerelectronics.com shows the player now with a "buy now". Anyone know if you purchased from them, are they shipping now?

The Denon's (2900, 3930, etc.) utilize an 8mb buffer for their seamless layer changes. My Sony 9000ES has a 2 second layer change - and it is horrible. Takes you right out of the movie. Other DVD players (Oppo, Toshiba XA2, Cambridge Audio) I have owned (or still own) had quick .5 second layer changes - and they are liveable. Never imagined that the 51 would have a 3 second layer change

YCbCr 4:4:4 at 8-bits per component (24 bits per pixel) is the default connection Data Format for HDMI to HDMI connections for all versions of HDMI. HDMI V1.3 devices that support the optional HDMI Deep Color feature (not all V1.3 devices support Deep Color, and some that do don't actually use all the extra bits transmitted over the connection) will typically offer 10-bits per component (30-bits per pixel) and 12-bits per component (36-bits per pixel) as alternative Data Formats.

YCbCr 4:2:2 at 12-bits per component (24 bits per pixel) is available on all versions of HDMI but not all HDMI devices support 4:2:2 connections, and some devices that do support it don't actually use all 12 bits of that.

The Pioneer players offer YCbCr 4:2:2 output, but we don't yet know whether any special processing they might do to take advantage of a Deep Color connection also enhances the output of a 4:2:2 connection.

ETA: I'll just add that the comments in that post linked above about data coming off a standard DVD as only a mere 8-bits per component YCbCr 4:2:0 *ALSO* apply to Blu-Ray (and HD-DVD) discs. Both horizontal and vertical color resolution is halved before the data is compressed and put on the disc and there is NO "Deep Color" content on such discs (and never will be).

I received my BDP-51FD on Friday from the Pioneer Store. It has the correct firmware, not the demo.

The BRP-05FD is supposed to be in by the 18th.

What resolution do I set the 51/05 to? [click below] Spoiler You have the following options using the resolution buttons on the remote: 1. AUTO - Best bet for most people. Detects if your TV is 1080p24 capable and sends 1080p24 if so. If not, it will send 1080p60. Deinterlacing/upconversion is done internally, and with firmware 1.17 the internal processing beats my Reon HQV chip. This setting also works well for sets that do not support 1080p. Make sure High Speed HDMI is on otherwise you will have issues getting 1080p/24 output with this setting. 2. Source Direct - Best bet for those with a very high-end scaler like DVDO Edge or those that need to force 24p. Bypasses internal processing and sends the source resolution of every disc to the display device/external processor - 1080p24 or 1080i60 for Blu-ray, 480i for DVD. This is also a good setting to use if you want 1080p24 for Blu-ray & you cannot get High Speed HDMI to work with your HDTV. 3. 1080p - Best bet if your TV has compatibility issues with 1080p24. This setting will have the player output 1080p60 all the time, using internal video processing to deinterlace & upscale 480i/1080i. -I am using the multichannel analog outputs and have little to no bass... What gives? [click below]** Spoiler * This is not a player issue. The problem is that your receiver is failing to apply the standard +10db gain to the LFE channel of the receiver's multichannel analog inputs. As a result, your LFE may be 10-15db quieter than it should be. To compensate for this, take the below steps. 1. Disable bass management on the 51FD/05FD. In other words, set all speakers to large and subwoofer to Yes. This will increase your LFE response by about 5db if you were previously using bass management. However that is not enough to fully compensate for your receiver's failure to amplify the LFE. You must also... 2. Set channel trims on the 51FD so that all speakers are net -10db lower than the sub. For instance, set the mains, center, and surrounds to -5db, while the sub is set to +5db. This combined with step #1 should close the gap. You are better off doing this in the player instead of the receiver, because doing it in the receiver will cause the LFE to be way off for all of your other sources. If you follow both of these steps, you should have a workable decent LFE channel. It may not be perfect, but with your particular setup it is probably the best you are going to do. -My 4:3 DVDs @ 1.33:1/fullscreen aspect are horizontally stretched, what do I do? [click below] Spoiler 1. Stop disc playback and go to "HOME"/setup menu 2. Go to "Video Out" 3. Go to "4:3 Video Out" and set to "NORMAL" -Okay I just did that but my widescreen nonanamorphic DVDs have bars on all sides now? * Simply use your TV's zoom mode. -I tried the recommended settings and my blacks and/or whites appear crushed, or the image is overly dark! * Under HDMI/Colorspace in the HOME MENU, try setting it to RGB 16-235. If that does not work try RGB 0-255. One of the two should give you proper black/white levels, the other one will have crushed blacks/whites (i.e. look overly dark). -My player gives me a red screen whenever I watch BD+ protected/20th Century Fox/MGM Blu-ray Discs... I am particularly interested in the analog-out decoding of the lossless audio formats, and how everything is sounding without the benefit of distance settings and advanced BM. I am also surprised, as many others are, that there is no FW update available online for these; it would seem very 20th-Century not to have this available (unless Pioneer is waiting fo the Beta-Testers, I mean First-Users, to report enough problems to make the new FW obsolete...)

I'm assuming I should simply use the processor in the 6010, versus either of these video processor's? I understand the 05 has some sort of enhanced (?) processing of some sort for its component output, yet I should still stick with the 6010's processor, no? As a general 05 question, though, if it's true the 05's component video processing is enhanced in some way, is that output going to be superior to its HDMI video performance? I dunno if this is relative, but I'll be transmitting audio via the variable outputs to my pre/pro.

voltes Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: New Jersey Posts: 216	has anybody here connected this to a projector yet. it's not detecting my projector as 1080i compliant and so it always select 720x480 during power up. once i manually switch it to 1080i, it will say its incompatible and asks whether to proceed or not. but still works even if i continue. im hoping it's just because of the .80a firmware.

I can't imagine having to go back to 3 second layer changes and long loading times. It seems so late 90's/early 2000. I had a couple of Pioneer DVD players years ago that were slower than the rest as well. Hopefully a fimeware upgrade can tweak this a bit but for now I'll only be interested in this player for BD.

Picked up my BPD-51FD at the Pioneer Store in South Coast plaza Friday evening (August 8). Per Olga, the BPD-05FD will be in the store in 10 days. They all have the newest firmware (NOT DEMO). BTW, the SC-07 is in stock and SC-05 will be in at the end of the month. Anyway, unpacked my player, wow, it's a beautiful piece of machinery! Hooked up to my Kuro PRO-100FD. The first disc I played was National Treasure.. The PQ was fantastic. I want to thank Ruin, Robert from VE and all the others, I would not have bought this without your deligent testing and reporting. Thank you! Dispite the naysayers in the other threads, I don't think anyone will be dissapointed in this unit, either in quality or performance. I am very happy.
