I'm not buying the set unless it comes with action figurs and a vintage German staff car to drive 'em around in.

They will, just as soon as the loaded version stops selling.

If BB carries it, I will watch the BD version. Otherwise, given the price of the BD version, I'll just make do with my old DVD.

I totally forgot the bits posted pictures of all of Warner's new 'Ultimate' boxes.

I also didn't realize the BD version of this box set is priced $5.00 higher MSRP than the DVD version until I saw the Bits' article. At least DVD owners have the option of buying the movie only version instead.

I am quite happy with my HD DVD version. I love the movie, but I must agree with a few others here that the blu-ray is approaching Laserdisc pricing--territory I can't really afford to enter.

Since I already own it on HD DVD I won't buy it again, and I agree that it's a high price, but that box set is really nice looking.

Good news...

1. Casablanca has just been announced for Germany for November 7th... and there will be both the Ultimate Collector's Edition as well as a "regular" BD release, the latter one without the memorabilia and without the Jack Warner documentary. I think it's a given that the US will get the "regular" release as well.

http://www.cinefacts.de/news/news.php?newsid=13358

2. The Amazon pre-order price for the UCE is down to a very reasonable (IMO) $ 41,95...

My local Fry's still has HD-DVD copies for $9.00.

LOL, is this part of Warner's low-priced-catalogs strategy?

In my younger days, I used to get real excited about the extra plastic fluff that comes in these types of super duper editions. Now I know that they just take up space and very unnecessary. Just gimme the movie and the bonus features on the disc, please.

Glad I already have this on HD DVD.

It is creditable that Warner is going out of their way to create this special packaging. What is uniquely created for the Blu Ray version?

I agree that the importance of special features is overblown, especially those on a separate disk. I have also come to realize that many, if not most, of the special features on Blu-ray disks are not even in HD. Yawn.

That would put DVD at laser disc pricing as well, since it's $5.00 cheaper MSRP.

What's there to be neutral about at this point? Format inclusive, perhaps....?

I have the HD-DVD too....no need to double down!

are pre-1953 movies really something we need in HD? are there borders or something? I can't see the resolution being better enough to warrant a re-purchase on something that old, unless it was a complete restoration. even then though, the 4X3 would distract me from any minor improvements anyway.

The notion that films wouldn't benefit from HD simply because they're in 4:3 is ludicrous.

Casablanca (on HD-DVD) was one of the best looking movies in my 400+ title HD-software catalog.

You obviously don't have as much knowledge about film as you think you do...

I tend not to watch much 4:3 stuff anymore, either. Nevertheless, film is film so I would expect that the remastering of the original film to 1080p would add a lot to one's enjoyment of one of the great films of all time. That said, I suspect that I will stick with my DVD copy of the movie and just rent the BD version when it becomes available.

Absolutemente! Si!

The colour beats the hell out of the DVD's or LD's. There's alot of shades of grey between black and white.

$50 for the BD? I don't think so. I'll pick up the HD DVD cheap instead.

I don't think HD-DVD's will play in a Blu-ray player so I'm not sure why all the discussion about them?

There are at least 3 models of Blu-Ray players that play HD DVD's. (I own one.) This is Warner. The chances of this being a different encode than the HD DVD are slim to none. However, I do agree that this is the Blu-Ray software forum. Hopefully, Warner will release it as a standard catalog later.

I think if you don't already own the HDDVD that this is one all should have in a collection. A beautiful transfer indicative of what things can look like if there is care involved.
