First pics of Oppo's upcoming BDP-83 BD/DVD/SACD player from CEDIA

Oppos new up coming BDP S83 Blue Ray player. Its loaded. No price as of yet.
No details as of yet.

From Neuromancer:

"Sent an e-mail to my guy at OPPO and asked him two questions I at least new he would be able to talk about. The first was if the player shown at CEDIA was a working unit; the second was concerning the price.

Is the unit working?

Quote:
Yes, the player is fully working. Some of the confusion comes from the player being a static unit. A static unit is not turned on nor is it connected to anything. Some people mistook this arrangement to assume that the player was nothing more than a black box. It works. It plays Blu-Ray discs; it plays them well.

Price?

Quote:
The price of the player is still in a state of flux. At this time we are can only confirm that the price of the player will be no less than $500, and no more than $1000. Yes, Gizmodo is reporting a more firm price range, but that range has been thrown around internally for the last year as we started looking into Blu-Ray and HD DVD technology. There will be several factors which will determine the final production price. Several factors include consumer demand, market influences caused by strong competition, costs of licensing rights, and our ability to procure the parts required to manufacture a full production unit.

Anything you want to tell us?

Quote:
Be patient. We appreciate all of the fervor, features requests, and anticipation for the player, but please remember that this player is still a work in progresses. As much as my Support team would love to talk about the player, they will no be able to. Once we have final information to disclose, we will be singing the BDP-83 features from the mountain tops. "

Wow. That was quick. I see a LAN port on the back. Hopefully, Oppo won't join the late comers with more not quite there 1.1 players and release a full 2.0 capable player. Moreover, I see 7.1 multichannel analog outs! Add Anchor Bay scaling, and they've got a contendah!

well, with the analog outs and ethernet, it seems like more than just a transport.
no ideas of release?

Drool...

OK, I made a comment recently about how no piece of AV equipment has made me say "Wow, Sexy, Man!" recently (if ever). This might just do that. I like the look, and if Oppo makes this a true universal player (BD, DVD-V, DVD-A, SACD, CD) then I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

Please let this be more than just a BD/DVD-V player. There are lots of those - Oppo needs to rise above the pack, at a good price.

I think I see a SACD logo, so that is a good start.

I bet you there would be a lot of preorders on this Blu-ray player.

You're joking, correct?

It's a great looking player. Stylish and simple.

Is there a pre-order list yet?

Kidding, but I'm definitely waiting for this player to be released before buying my first BR player this winter/spring. I love my 983 and have high hopes for the S83. The S83 and Pio 51 are on my very short list.

Looking more closely, I see a BD Live logo above the ethernet port. This means it is Profile 2.0, right?

Doesn't matter to me now, but maybe one of those things I find useful in the future.

There are also a bunch of DTS logos, which would lead me to believe/hope that it supports DTS-HD MA decoding internally.

This looks like it could be the cat's meow. Now just keep the MSRP sane, please. I won't buy it for $1K, no matter what the feature set. $400 seems like a nice target.

Personally, I couldn't care less about SACD/DVD-A, but if its a region free DVD player (I don't expect a region free BD player), it'll replace 2 players I've got now. With Killer upscaling to boot, I'll scarf it up ASAP.

I look forward to seeing the test results on this one. If it is as good as their other players, then it's time to buy BD

considering 983 with VRS is 399, I predict this to be around 799.

The front logo has the SACD and it looks like the DVD is blank underneath suggesting DVD VIDEO and AUDIO. Looks like it does all 3!

I was thinking around that price too....although $699 is also a possibility in my mind too. I'm thinking the VRS chipset costs will have gone down a bit.

With the 983 at $400, I highly doubt this will go for any less than $600. I'm wondering with the VRS technology, is it just for scaling like the Toshiba A35 or for both deinterlacing and scaling like the 983?

Hopefully it won't be too much.. The Sony S550 is rumored to be $399 and the Samsung 2550 is going for $499 at Best Buy right now (probably closer to $399 in the next couple of months) and it has the HQV chip.

And of course the PS3 is $399-499.

I am hoping for $599 for the Oppo...

Yeah, I suppose $400 is hoping too much for a low-ball price, especially since the 983 goes for that, but I can always dream, right?

I guess $600 at release is the lowest we could hope for, maybe $500 next year. Unless other BD players drop significantly, forcing the market price down in general.

Guaran-damn-tee it, especially if Oppo finds a way to continue their region free ease of use for both DVD and Blu-Rays.

Oppo hinted at Aspect Ratio controls/Vertical Stretch for 2.35 systems when they said they would be making a BD player. Anyone an inkling of whether this might be implemented?
