G45 related - what is igfxsrvc and igfxpers doing?

I am having a problem on Gigabyte GA-EG45M-DS2H system. When computer boots up it displays 480x640 on my TV display (pioneer). Most of the time it correctly switches to 1080x1920 once Vista is fully loaded, but sometimes it goes to 800x600 resolution. I don't get sound through my Onkyo 705 at that resolution. I believe it was posted somewhere that disabling on of the sevices (igfxsrvc and/or igfxpers) would fix this problem.

Can someone expalin what these services do? And which one (or both) need to be disabled. Finally, how do I disable? Do I go into task manager and stop it or is this done somewhere else?

Thanks.

run msconfig.exe
disable igfxpers.exe under the start-up tab
you will never see another resolution unless you select it yourself

igfxpers.exe should always be disabled for 2 reasons:
1) changing of resolution
2) constant high cpu usage over 50% in many systems (igfxsrvc.exe is responsible but disabling igfxpers.exe fixes it)

you don't do anything to igfxsrvc.exe

You can also remove igfxpers from the registry at HKLM\Software\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Just delete the entry containing igfxpers

Then download and use DTDCalc to get put a fall-back resolution into the registry. When the system decides it is failing and needs to set the screen resolution, it will read it from the registry instead of using the crappy resolution like you have seen.

A thread about DTDCalc is HERE.

It is a great application which was designed by AVSForum members for use by AVSForum members.

To get the EDID info to put into the registry (DTDCalc will do that part for you), you need to click the "I" at the top right of the video driver console and then save the report to your computer. The EDID info is inside the resultant txt file.
