Living Room Conversion
I have made a few posts on my build I started last month. I decided to give the room a name and put it all in one place.
I am converting a living room into my theater. The room is 21' 7" L x 13' 10" W x 8' 6" T It had a 3' tall pass through almost the entire length of one of the long walls. I insulated and closed it in. There is one 48" x 94" window on the other long outside wall. I stuffed the window well with 4" thick mineral filled insulation for outside sound deadening and light control. One of the short walls had a 5' wide walk through. I framed it in and added a 36" w soild core wood door. I will be using my current Klipsch speaker system. Mains: RF-83 Center: RC-64 Sides: RS-62 Rear: RS-62 Subwoofers: Duel Epik Conquests ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Room with pass through closed off and window covered. Baseboard, Crown Moulding, Chair Rail, and Columns. I wanted the window cover to be easily reversible. I used some 2' x 4' x 2" sound panels I already had. They are placed to high but my main concern was sealing off the window. ![]() ![]() ![]() Equipment closet: The shelves are 22" w x 20" d I have 10 on hand Rear: ![]() ![]() Front: ![]() Grey walls. Black ceiling and front wall. Ceiling fan is coming down. John ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The carpet was ordered today. It will be plush cut pile cranberry red. This is my first projector. I picked up a Panasonic PT-AE3000. It arrived yesterday. John Last edited by John H; 10-13-09 at 01:45 PM.. |

John,
You have the start to what looks like will be an amazing theater. Really like how you finished off the equipment closet, very nice looking. Also, like the columns. Can you give some dimensions on width and depth? Can't wait to see how things continue to come together. I will continue watching your progress. Allan |

Wow, that's a nice looking room John! I don't suppose you have any pix you could post documenting your column build? AE3000 should look awesome in there. And did I miss it, or have you posted your intended screen size yet? C'mon man, where's your blue tape??

Thanks everyone for the compliments.

The columns were an afterthought that were installed after the base and crown moulding. They are 17" W x 3" D. The face is 3/4" thick. The closets internal dimensions are 7' T x 49" W x 20.5" D I hope so. It will be my first projector. I am still deciding on my screen. Quote:
![]() I will need room on each side of the screen for my L/R mains. They are Klipsch RF-83 towers. Their dimensions are 49.6" T x 9.25" W x 20" D Seating distance is somewhat flexible. What would be the minimum screen to side wall distance I could get away with? A 125" dia. 2.35:1 screen with frame would give about 2' on each side. Thats about also what I need for my corner bass traps. Quote:

Carpet was installed Friday. Color doesn't photograph well. Tri-Traps are placed in front corners. I will be ordering screen and seats this week.
I found a curved row of 3 black Berkline 45094's in stock for a nice price. Not my first style choice but will get me started. They will be sitting on a platform with 4 original ButtKickers attached. John ![]() |

I installed black baffles and trim rings on the recessed lights. Can light went in place of the ceiling fan. Another was installed in front of the equipment cabinet. Exhaust ventilation and lighting was installed inside the closet as well. Basic Grafik Eye will be used on lights.
My Carada 128" diagonal 2.35:1 screen is being delivered on the 15th. Seats will be coming the following week. Here are a few pictures taken with some 65w floods installed. John ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I hung my screen on the front wall Tuesday. All electric is finished. Dedicated 20A outlets in equipment closet. Power bridges to projector and subwoofers. I am still waiting on my row of recliners to arrive. They will sit on a platform with my 4 'original' ButtKickers attached. They are driven with a pair of bridged Crown K2 amplifiers. Klipsch RF-82 mains, RC-64 center, RS-62 surrounds. I haven't positioned the front stage speakers yet. Duel Epik Conquests subwoofers. Panasonic PT-AE3000U projector hung from ceiling on 18" extension. Please excuse the crappy photos. John ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Your Theater is looking great with the combination of the equipment you have, you might never leave that room!

![]() The only reason you need buttkickers is like me, I have a young daughter and usually watch movies after she is in bed and I have to turn the subs down.

Thanks everyone for the compliments.
I have been using my original ButtKicker I's for 8-10 years. I first used them in my 2048 cf bedroom theater to drive a queen size adjustable bed. One 2' x 4' x 3/4" platform for each end. 2 ButtKickers mounted on each. I had them paired with duel Velodyne HGS-18 subwoofers. I use an auxiliary dedicated channel on my Parasond C2 for the BK's lowpassed at 20Hz. I had the duel Conquests in the bedroom before the theater room was built. Even in the smaller room I still prefered to use them in conjuction with the BK's. I will be only using one row of 3 recliners. If the subwoofers don't measure good in their present location I'll see about moving them. John Original BK sitting next to a BK2 (LFE) ![]() |

I couldn't wait for my theater seats to arrive. I temporarily turned the room into a theater for one.
I moved in a recliner on a 4'x4'x3/4" platform with a couple of BK's attached. I loaded up a few pieces of gear into a cabinet on wheels and hooked up an Anti-Mode 8033 room correction to the Conquests. A couple hours of audio/video hook up and calibration and... I just finished watching my first movie in my new room. Iron Man. I have been saving it for the big screen since it's release. What a difference a room makes! I'm wiring the front wall on Friday. I have another HSU ULS-15 DualDrive system on the way. I am going to try a ULS-15 QuadDrive system up front. And test the pair of Conquests up front also. I will use what sounds best. Merry Christmas, John ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
