Wedding Crashers comparison PIX

So I pop in my copy and selected the "Uncorked" version (well who wouldn't we are all suckers for that) and within a few minutes I noticed something is "off". I remember watching this movie from HBO dish two years ago and I know it looked grainy and not this DNR piece of s*** again from New Line. I have no plans of doing a PIX thread on this title initially but there is something I discovered that there are two different encodes used. Yes that's right the two versions in the discs does not share the same encode. Usually they just slap in the extra scenes like some other titles. Unlike Dark "Wax" City the difference is more than just a few frames.

One of them did not get the extra DNR treatment

Meaning both versions does not deliver the same visual experience

As far as I know this is the only instance where both DNR and Non-DNR versions of the same movie are in the disc. Pan's Labyrinth also from New Line you have to import the HD DVD or Blu-ray titles to get the Non-DNR transfers. With The Golden Compass the best we can get is a high bitrate non-dnr trailer from the supplemental disc (still looking for a proper release).

All I can say is thank you for the new guy at New Line for doing this

What we have here is:

Theatrical encode has higher bitrate.

Extended encode has added DNR.

Theatrical encode has bigger file size with shorter runtime.

Extended encode has smaller file size despite having longer runtime.

Additional DNR saves space on a very small 50 GB disc space

DVD does not even comes close to the picture quality of the HD transfer. I found lots of FUD out on the web regarding this title. Oh well.

New Line has hired a bunch of ******** to figure out seamless branching. This feature is proven to be too difficult for the studio to figure out. Or maybe its too hard to implement for Blu-ray.

Be real interested for some captures in some of the full screen high motion shots - some of the group dancing at the beginning with the champagne uncorkings, and later some of the sailboat flyover. Also, when Rachel McAdams is standing on the beach, her calf and foot area below here Capri's seemed to have alot of pixel dancing that likely only shows during playback, not sure you'd see it during a capture. At least I seem to recall that.

Hopefully the next set of screenshots will be more revealing but based on these it looks like New Line took the DNR version and added some grain for the theatrical version or the DNR algorithm they used for the Uncorked version is really good. I don't see significant loss of details in the Uncorked version but I'm not very good at this.

Probably because there's more compression artifacts than grain visible.

Remember they tried this on Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and ended up with lots of popping noises at branch points in the DTS-MA soundtrack. Perhaps that is not figured out yet, or perhaps due to the complexity of DTS-MA it is very difficult to do branching without audible artifacts.

Also, is it possible this was shot on digital cam and transferred to film later or artificial grain added as other posters mentioned?

It is an interesting way to attempt to please both the grain-lovers and grain-haters.

i.e. keep the theatrical version closest to "theatrical experience", while DNRing the "uncut" video-only version.

Its interesting to see a film released in 2 versions and one with more noise reduction applied. Now we don't have to simulate the perceived differences so much as to just post the pics.

Perhaps that is not figured out yet, or perhaps due to the complexity of DTS-MA it is very difficult to do branching without audible artifacts.

Two words: King Kong.

Not that it matters here, anyway: Wedding Crashers doesn't have DTS-MA, but rather TrueHD.

I don't know whether or not the grain on the theatrical version is real*, but I certainly agree that, using the detail-level of the theatrical version as a comparison standard, the "Uncorked" version certainly doesn't look like it's lost any detail beyond grain structure. If the theatrical version is legitimate, I think the "Uncorked" version displays a very deftly-handled application of DNR, as least as far as can be seen in stills.

I don't really mind the "Uncorked" look (again, relative to the theatrical-cut transfer seen here- I've never seen this movie); it looks like the theatrical-cut presentation- just 'cleaner'. Seeing it in motion may give new insight, but the skin textures certainly don't look waxy in stills. Of course, they don't really look very resolute or revealing, either.

*it's certainly horribly macroblocky, though!

How can anyone say the DNR hasn't done any damage when the hair strands in both shots have magically fused together because of the filtering.

Yeah, the uncorked version is beyond ugly. Where is the consistency...I don't get the decision to DNR one but not the other.

I remember watching this movie from HBO dish two years ago and I know it looked grainy and not this DNR piece of s* again from New Line. I have no plans of doing a PIX thread on this title initially but there is something I discovered that there are two different encodes used. Yes that's right the two versions in the discs does not share the same encode. Usually they just slap in the extra scenes like some other titles. Unlike Dark "Wax" City the difference is more than just a few frames. One of them did not get the extra DNR treatment Meaning both versions does not deliver the same visual experience As far as I know this is the only instance where both DNR and Non-DNR versions of the same movie are in the disc. Pan's Labyrinth also from New Line you have to import the HD DVD or Blu-ray titles to get the Non-DNR transfers. With The Golden Compass the best we can get is a high bitrate non-dnr trailer from the supplemental disc (still looking for a proper release). Theatrical encode has bigger file size with shorter runtime. Extended encode has smaller file size despite having longer runtime. Additional DNR saves space on a very small 50 GB disc space DVD does not even comes close to the picture quality of the HD transfer. I found lots of FUD out on the web regarding this title. Oh well. New Line has hired a bunch of ******** to figure out seamless branching. This feature is proven to be too difficult for the studio to figure out. Also, when Rachel McAdams is standing on the beach, her calf and foot area below here Capri's seemed to have alot of pixel dancing that likely only shows during playback, not sure you'd see it during a capture. At least I seem to recall that.

I don't see significant loss of details in the Uncorked version but I'm not very good at this.
