More multiregion options

Another seller of multiregion BDP-83's: Custom HT. This one is located in the U.S. (and offers many additional mods for the Oppo). The MR mod seems a tad less comfortable because you have to power down the player when switching BD zones: http://www.meridianunplugged.com/ubb...6096#Post96096

Thumbs up

I received an email from Spears & Munsil that stated the blue filters are now in stock, and they will be mailed to each customer by the end of July. Nice!

The topic under discussion is the effect of channel trim on the analog multichannel outputs, when SACD audio is set to DSD.

Sounds like you are running your sub power through the conditioner and overloading it. If I were you, I would plug it straight into the wall.

Thanks, but I am puzzled by the FAQ. Your comment about trims occurring after other audio processing seems to imply that if I set speakers in the Oppo to small, and boost the SW, I will be boosting steered bass incorrectly. In other words, I would have to leave speakers on large in the Oppo (my prepro has no analog control - so I would have to leave all speakers on large). In the FAQ (see below) the "note" seems to agree with my understanding of the above, while another section right below it seems to say that steered bass is attenuated (i.e., cut) and that therefore trimming (boosting) the SW in the Oppo is o.k. Am I just not understanding? Thanks again. I am trying to decide today whether to buy now or wait a bit.

From FAQ:

1) Note

Simply raising the subwoofer volume trim by 10dB after bass steering is not the same thing. Yes, it boosts the LFE component the correct amount, but it also incorrectly boosts steered bass by an extra 10dB.

2) What to do if the receiver is not flexible enough to handle LFE levels properly?

Speaker trim can be used to workaround receivers that do not boost the LFE input. This is because the redirected bass from the main channels is attenuated before it is mixed with the LFE signal. The receiver should boost the subwoofer output signal of the player anyway, so applying channel trim to the subwoofer in the player can achieve the same result, although this is not recommended since it defeats the purpose of leaving enough headroom through the interconnect for the subwoofer signal.

Are they referring to customers that bought directly from them? Does this include Oppo customers?

Thanks for the info,

Steve

Pardon my French: If I read this guy's testresults correctly, he got it working based on the 0601 FW. It seems to work just fine. Anybody els here with personal experience?

Good idea but the sub and the surrounds are plugged into the wall. They are across the room from the power conditioner. That even makes it stranger and stranger. Why would the Onkyo, the lcr speakers, the Oppo and a Samsung 58" TV blow the circuit breaker in the conditioner? Must be the Onkyo kicking out too much juice?

I believe this note in the FAQs is incorrect and I sent a PM to the author about that last night. If the player has mixed LFE and redirected bass with the proper 10db gap in levels, then you can simply turn up the sub to provide the needed boost at the end. LFE and redirected bass both need to be boosted by 10db (15db with bass management). The Oppo handles this properly. So, you can let it do bass management and do the needed boost in your processor or at the sub.

Speaker trim can be used to workaround receivers that do not boost the LFE input. This is because the redirected bass from the main channels is attenuated before it is mixed with the LFE signal. This merely says you can do the boost by increasing the SW output of the player, if needed. But, it's not recommended because that runs counter the purpose of recording LFE 10db low in the first place - the audio may clip during very loud passages.

If you are holding off on getting an Oppo because you fear it won't do proper bass management, there's nothing to worry about. It does correct bass management and outputs the SW channel in need of a 15db boost. The boost can be done in your receiver or at the sub or in some combination of the two. Of course, if you increase the volume at the sub, you will need to recalibrate your digital sources to account for the added SW volume.

More than likely it is the combination of the current draw from the Samsung (plasma I assume?) and Onkyo that tripped your Power Conditioner. I would think that your Onkyo had to be near clipping (drawing max power) for this to happen though...

Did the circuit breaker on the back of the APC H10 actually trip, or did you just get the Overload indication on the front?

** I have found the same thing
SACD trim level finding
I know the learned ones on this forum have said, as have Oppo to me via email, that there is absolutely no audio processing on SACD when set to DSD. This is very likely true for speaker size and speaker distance settings, but I can confirm that the channel trim settings do work, not just with the PCM setting as one would expect, but also with the DSD setting. I am not attempting to argue or refute anyone, but just to report my empirical findings. I can hear it, I can hear the levels change as I change the trim settings. In DSD.
****. I have been recalibrating so often lately. I am not sure where I am. {Just to test different set up- I have a very basic 5.1 system} With using Ent-In pass through in AVR/pre/pro.

2. I am curious why L/R speakers to Large here? [I am familiar with pro/cons&realities] Your speakers must be pretty good full range speakers- I’ll see what mine hear like. Over the weekend.

3. Interesting I have Wall-E and haven’t thought to us its Calibration test tones. I’ll try also.
4. We need to be clear on the fact we are using MCA (Muti-channel-Analog) or the D2ch. When referencing our set ups. S/PDIF is a separate set up also. [HDMI is Video only here]
5. I set my Oppo to 0 sub trim. And +dB on sub knob.

An earlier email said that all the Oppo customers would be getting the filter when it was available. I'm not sure who will be doing the mailing...S&M delivers to Oppo to send out, or Oppo gives the mailing list to S&M.

S&M does no distribution. From their site: Available from Amazon.com, OPPO Digital, CRT Projectors (UK) and AV Science.

A clarification on LFE question

Thanks BIslander (re:"But, it's not recommended because that runs counter the purpose of recording LFE 10db low in the first place - the audio may clip during very loud passages. " ) My issue is that I have no processing whatsoever on my pre-pro of analog signals. As you say I could turn up the sub. But one (hopefully) last question: According to my Pre-pro's manufacturer there would be no problem on the processor end as it is completely pass thru, and they didn't think the interconnect would be an issue. Is the interconnect really a weak point? What if I use a 'garden hose size' interconnect?

Will the code free/region free firmware allow you to upconvert DVDs to 1080i over component?

I know this region free download link has been posted before with other links. I am posting this one again since it is the direct one and contains no spyware or other junk.

http://www.codefreedvd.com/dvd_oppo_..._firmware.html

You must install the the Oppo firmware first before you install the multiregion firmware. Instructions are in the Zip file.

They have links to both the official and beta firmwares.

Maybe a dumb question, but I've not really been a big buyer of movies until HD and BD. I understand the studio's rationale for Region specific discs, but that being said, what does MRD capability do for us here in the US? It seems that pretty much everything is released here???

Some of use enjoy special versions of disks not released in the US in both SD or Blu-Ray format. If you have no interest in these disks I would not even consider installing the multi-region firmware. It is also not true that everything is released in the US. I was just over in Europe and I picked up several SD films that are not available in the US.

This may not be the appropriate place to ask this question so I applogize if it is not. I have a Harmony 550 and I have tried to program it so when I select watch DVD or listen to CD (For SACD and DVD-A) it does not start automatically on start up. I have set the remote on the Harmony site to not start and adjusted the delays (500ms) but it still always starts the disc when I select one of the commands. Has anyone experienced this and found a fix for it? Also if I have the player on as a result of loading a disc and select one of the activities the player turns off instead of stays on. I cannot seem to get it to stay on if I load a disc and then select an activity. Any help would be apprecicated. Thanks.
