Samsung PN50B650/PN58B650 Owner Thread

Since people (including myself) seems to start getting the new Samsung PN5xB650 plasma, I thought I'd start an owner thread for it.

I just had it for one night, and here's some impressions (similar to what I post in the 2009 Samsung Plasma thread):
- PQ looks great, comparable to the Luxia 55B6000, though does not seems to "pop" as much.
- Buzzing sound is pretty audible
- Black level - When the room is totally dark, the black bars on a 2.35:1 movie looks greyish. But if I increase the ambient light a bit, the bar looks darker.

Will play with it a bit more, but overall it's a nice set.

Can owners of the B650 confirm whether your set has buzzing sound or not? Mine is audible, even from 5 feet away if the room is quiet.

I have heard a faint buzz on EVERY different display set but I would NOT describe it as pretty audible. The only way I could hear it was by listening to the rear of the panel over the electronics.

I have 2 questions:

1) How is the heat output? Does the TV get hot? Does it give off a lot of heat?

2) Anyone got any settings yet? There seem to be a lot of options so I figure you can dial things in pretty good with just the user-accessible menu options.

I've had my set (58B650) for 3 days and have not heard any buzz. However, I have not put my ear right up to the set to see if there is one...not sure I want to either...afraid if I hear it once I might start listening for it all the time.

Anyone have some decent picture calibration settings for this set?

I'm doing a break in right now, there is some heat coming off the screen. This is my first plasma so I can't say if it's excessive or not, doesn't seem to be drastic though.

Great that you can't hear the buzzing. Wish I can claim that myself. I heard it right after I turn on the TV the 1st time, and I was about 5 feet away. I can still hear it now in my main seating area, which is about 12 feet away.

I'm new to calibration, but I did try using DVE to calibrate it in my dark room. Here're some settings that I remember:

Mode: Movie
Cell Light: 8
Brightness: 48
Contrast: 80
Sharpness: 0
Color: 50
Warm2

I have most processings turned off, except "Cinema Smooth". Overall, great picture and beautiful frame. Just can't get rids of the "bees" inside the panel. Need to be careful with IR too, as I've seen it few times, even if the static text is on the screen for less than one minute.

Good luck and enjoy your set!

I have had this set since tuesday and for the most part I have been running burn-in images until the evening when we watch a couple hours of Comcast HD. I can only compare this to my Sony GWIII and a Hitachi P42H401. It runs warmer than my GWIII but not excessively, my Hitachi plasma runs hotter. As for humming I have none I can only notice it when the room is silent. The image quality is much better than either the Hitachi or Sony, blacks look black to me but, I think I may not be the best judge for black levels since I have never described blacks on my sony as grey. I could take pictures but, I think that it isn't a very good way to determine image quality. So far every thing is sharp and crisp and the colors look really good especially, since I changed the picture settings to similar levels numbers as seowfn.

I now know what people mean when they talk about torch mode, I watched one movie that way and had to change the settings from the defaults because I found it to be way to bright. I also noticed that right out of the box in the defalt mode IR was horrible. I had my PS3 menus stay on the screen at least 5 minutes. The IR seems better since I have been running the burn-in. I also Noticed that with the cinema smooth my audio was out of sync on the first movie I watched. I watched a little of "I Am Legend" last night and did not notice any issues but, I was working out and wasn't looking to closely. I also don't know if I had the PS3 setup right on the first night. I have made changes since then so, maybe it is fine now.

Audio Lag? Do you have a reciever? or was this audio playing through your tvs speakers and the audio was off?

Also you have a PS3, have you played any games yet? notice any input lag, or phosphor lag? any other IR problems now after your ps3 settings changes? and what changes were these? thanks

also do you have the Anti IR features turned on? orbiter and such?

Hi all, Ordered my 58b650 from Sears earlier this week when they had the triple discount day. It will be delivered tomorrow. I've bought HDTV's for my 2 daughters but this will be my first in home. I am stoked, yeaaaaaaaaaaaa.
As far a settings are concerned I have seen 3 or so postings of the new Sammys on various threads, I could only find one just now. It is post 284 of the Samsung PN58b550 HDTV thread. I will keep trying to find the others.

Also do yourself a favor and check out the Samsung cell light thread, it has some great discussion/arguments on cell light and various other settings. It's a must read for new owners.

I will be buying a calibration disk, probably DVE. I think it's a must to continue the fun of new ownership.

My one daughter has a Sammy 720 P(2007 model). She did no break-in and has had no IR at all. My plans are to watch it and also do a break-in while I'm not watching. I'll need to download the break-in pictures if I can find the thread again.

Good luck to all with any buzzing and IR issues.

Forgot 1 thing. I read in one of the threads that using a white screen(maybe like the scrolling bar) would work just as well as the break-in dvd with colors. There was some debate on this. Anyone have any opinions?

Lemme put it this way - are the screen and bezel warm to the touch or do you have to pull your finger away after a couple seconds :P

How is the usb movie video performance?

Found some more settings information. Remember these are not B650 settings so our results may be different possibly due to the different screen coatings.

Check out post 12 on the Samsung PNxx B450 thread. This is the lower 720P model. The settings provided were not calibrated but they were set, and with the exception of blacks, pretty much matched a calibrated kuro the poster owner. What's nice about these settings is that they include the following:

21 Red offset
25 green offset
19 blue offset
23 Red gain
25 green gain
30 Blue gain

From the cell light thread here is a recap
cell 8 in the dark 10 with lights
contrast 84 (this gives 40 footlamberts(light?)) which is perfect for a dark room.
Brightness 54 the range could be 48-54. Check for detail vs. black crush in this range
Sharpness 0
color 50
tint 54/46
gamma -2
mode movie but some liked standard
Black tone, dynamic contrast and edge enhancement off
tone warm 2
flesh tones 0
White balance at factory defaults

If you have any questions find the original posts as I am no expert.

Have any of you B650 owners used the scrolling bars yet? Or viewed a white screen of some sort? See any pink?

The 50B650 I saw at BB the other day had pretty drastic pink vertical banding while on the scrolling bars screen. I really hope this is not the norm cause I want one! There's a chance it could have been reflections from the God-awful flood lights in the store...? The set was mounted up high, like 7-8ft. up.

I just bought mine yesterday so no real break in time yet but I do notice that on a white screen there appears to be a hint of pinkish color,I would describe it as beige.....although I really didn't have time to adjust any settings
I'll try some things tonight

Sorry I haven't been able to reply and only have a moment now. The IR issue seems gone and the sound seems to be related to the movie "The Express", "Iran Man" looked fine to me. I have an old reciever and am I using an optical cable. I will need to look closer at the audio settings on the PS3 and the reciever.

Minimal, 1 out of 10. must be within inches of unit and no ambient sound.

Your Tv has to be recieving a 24P source from an HDMI and it will then let you engage the cinema smooth feature.
