Lightbulb Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in HDTV!

Exclusive to AVS.

As confirmed by representatives from Turner, TCM HD is now up and available for distribution.

Update:
Initial carriage, at a minimum, will be on Cablevision, with Comcast and TWC signed up. Expect to find TCM HD on your multichannel provider as they expand their HD offerings.

A big tip of the AVS hat to member Tybee, for first posting the breaking news.

Big scoop. Even the usual suspects like satellite guys don't have this, yet. Thanks!

As long as they don't plan to tamper with anything on TCM (OAR, commercial-free, uncut, uncensored, almost no bug, etc.) I'm very, very happy about this. Any tampering and it could be the end of a very great thing.

Here's hoping for the best, including prompt, widespread availability. TCM is by far my favorite SD channel and even if TCM HD is nothing but upscales at first it would be fine by me. Just about anything would be a huge improvement over the resized, blurry, artifact-filled SD I'm currently getting.

TCM HD will almost assuredly do the right (OAR) thing.

That said, however, I was surprised to see, on a trip to Mexico a few years ago, the Latin TCM (over satellite) showed P&S movies....

--

But really, I'm just dying to find out who/when this will be carried. There are a few "killer apps" in this hobby. And they differ from person to person. It's called "key content".

For some people, it's getting DirectTV because they need Sunday Ticket.

For some people, it's called a big antenna on the roof, because they need high bit rate network dramas.

etc.

For me, getting TCM HD would be such a killer app, and would dictate my provider, my DVR, etc etc., if it's not universally available across several providers.

Not really "satellite" news, so I can understand why it's not mentioned at "satellite guys".

If a tree falls in the forest, but no one knows the forest even exists, does it make a sound?

There's still no mention of TCM HD on their own web site, and you'd think they'd want people to bug their providers about it, nor is there a press release on their site.

TCM HD - television's best kept secret?

SIgh…

?

What is the big deal? They weren't quite ready yet to let the cat out of the bag.

Expect to see a press release, probably Monday.

Not that big a deal, but when most networks launch their HD uplinks they make a fairly big deal out of it and hint about it for at least a while first.

I'm just surprised that TCM didn't at least drop a few hints first.

With all the recent underwhelming HD announcements and additions:
ION HD
Live Well HD
Telemundo HD

TCM HD can't come soon enough!

All of the cable and sat forums will be all over this story if/when it is confirmed. Ken H is a very reliable source and I hope he's right about this. TCM is my favorite channel by far.

Ditto. It's the only single channel that'd compel me to switch providers.

Great. Cablevision. Not an option where I am (Dish, DirecTV, Comcast, Uverse soon).

Okay, I am whining.

But the lack of details on the Satellite chats -- which get wind of additions weeks or months in advance -- leaves me fearful that the wait for an option in my locale might be months (at best) away.

Oh wait yes again I am whining.

----

What I meant to say is "Thanks for the update. Keep 'em coming."

Is this from your insider knowledge or is there a reference source?

My speculation: You are worried for no good reason.

Warner Bros. spent a good chunk of change the last 10 years getting 4K and up transfers of their major catalog titles. If it has been restored for DVD, they've already got HD transfers for it waiting. I believe Paramount is the same way.

This is great news and I now have something else to pester Comcast about.

Those of you questioning whether this is legit, it is. I've had confirmation from three separate sources within TCM.

One of my sources passes this along as well: "I've seen widescreen movies on it today and it's jaw-dropping beautiful."

Get excited, folks.

Wow, I can't believe Cablevision will be (one of) the first to carry TCM HD. Usually they're the last to add channels. They were the last major provider to carry ESPN2 HD iirc.

They show their wide screen movies in OAR in SD, why would they change for HD? They will do movies the right way, no stretching. I think we can trust them. Now when is it available On Directv???
