3D on Samsung 1080p DLP with Mitsubishi 3DA-1 and no Gefen

This is a way to get 3D working on Samsung "3D ready" 1080p DLPs. This method involves entering the service menu and updating the EDID on HDMI 3 input to allow the Mitsubishi 3DA-1 checkerboard converter to work with Samsung DLPs without using a Gefen to fake the EDID.

Mitsubishi is now selling a Samsung DLP compatible 3D adapter (3DC-100S) so this method is no longer necessary.

This is a "TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK" solution.

If you would rather not mess with your Samsung's EDID, check out this thread:

What else you will need

-A PC that is capable of flashing the EDID (this depends on your video cards compatibility with PowerStrip)

-A cable to connect your PC video port to the TVs HDMI 3 input (if your PC has a vga output you may need to make a custom cable)

-PowerStrip registered version ($30 license): http://entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm

-Monitor Asset Manager (free): http://entechtaiwan.com/util/moninfo.shtm

-Mitsubishi 3DA-1 checkerboard converter or 3DC-1000 bundle
Regarding PowerStrip:

The "update EDID" option is an undocumented, unsupported feature, so it's not included in the trial version. You have to pay for the registration and then E-mail EnTech your pstrip.ini file and a request for the update EDID PIN. If you ask them about the the feature before registering PowerStrip they will probably deny any such feature exists. The "update EDID" feature is not compatible with every video card, this has been the biggest problem people are having. If you have trouble with this you can try using a different video card or PC. EnTech has been very good about giving people an additional PIN at no charge.

The cable:

If your PC has an HDMI or DVI out you should be able to use a standard cable or DVI-HDMI adapter. If it only has a VGA output you will need to build a custom cable. If your laptop has a external VGA output you can try using a VGA->DVI adapter and a DVI->HDMI adapter, you will not be able to get video to the TV but other users have reported successfully flashing the EDID with those adapters.

Building a VGA to HDMI cable

You'll need to sacrifice a VGA and a HDMI cable. Cut the VGA and HDMI cables in half. Using a continuity tester find the wires that lead to "sda" and "scl" on each cable.

VGA pinout:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

HDMI pinout:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI_connector

Solder the corresponding wires together. Solder the remaining wires in the VGA cable back together with the other half of the VGA cable. This way you can use the VGA input on your Samsung as the monitor.

Code:
Code:
VGA pin (monitor) VGA pin (PC)
**

Great summary.

It should be worth noting that the Updated EDID is created by grafting the Mitsubishi Manufacturer ID and Model Number into your stock Samsung EDID. These both occur within the first 12 bytes of the EDID. Then you have to regenerate the last byte which is the 8 bit checksum of the first 127 bytes (2s complement). This can be done with a hex editor such as Hex Workshop.

The EDID information is stored LSB first (backwards)...

Samsung's Mfgr ID is 2D4C.

HL61A750's Model ID is 03C7.

The checksum is 162 (A2 in Hex).

00FFFFFFFFFFFF004C2DC703000000003111010380A05A780AAEA1A6544C992614505421080081800101 010101010101010101010101023A801871382D40582C450040846300001E 662150B051001B304070360040846300001E000000FD00173D1A4417000A 202020202020000000FC0053414D53554E470A202020202001A2

Mitsubishi's ID is AC34.

65737's Model ID is 31C8.

So the updated EDID would look something like this:

00FFFFFFFFFFFF0034ACC831010101013111010380A05A780AAEA1A6544C992614505421080081800101 010101010101010101010101023A801871382D40582C450040846300001E 662150B051001B304070360040846300001E000000FD00173D1A4417000A 202020202020000000FC004D45555350545631310A20202001D0

My process for creating the new EDID is to extract your original one using MonInfo and save it as a binary.

Then open the binary file up in Hex Workshop, adjust the proper values (you can use a bin from a Mitsubishi as a reference).

Then highlight the first 127 bytes, and go to Tools -> Generate Checksum -> 8-bit

In the bottom right corner it will tell you the checksum, change it to 2s complement in the dropdown.

Take this hex value and stick it in the 128th byte position.

The resulting bin should still open in MonInfo, if you got the checksum wrong, MonInfo will warn you.

Thanks guys, I will update the database.

NetCoder, good info on editing the EDID. Here is a nice summary of the EDID format for those of you interested.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EDID

Also, I would like to note that the 3DA-1 puts out it's own EDID when connected to a mits 3D ready TV. I have no idea if that EDID changes depending on what model it's connected to.

Please feel free to post mits 3D ready EDIDs as well as Samsung. Just be sure to include the exact model # so I can keep the database accurate. Once I get some more mits EDIDs I will check the 3DA-1 output.

Also please make sure you dump the EDID from HDMI 3, or which ever input is the 3D input.

FilmMixer, is that a HLN-67A750 or HL67A750?

Sorry.. HL67A750...

Question for NetCoder...

In the original example the OP gave, the updated and original only differ in Manufacturer and Model (and obviously check sum.)

In your example, the two have other differences.. is this an example only, or can the second updated code be used?

#8 ·
I have a Gateway laptop with an HDMI output... works fine with Mon Info but since the master display is the laptop, PowerStrip doesn't see the Samsung...

I'll have to figure this one out...

Using the laptops VGA output to the TV's VGA input will not allow for an EDID flash, will it?

I also modified the "Monitor Name" attribute which is "SAMSUNG" in our TVs, but in the Mitsubishi it was "MEUSPTV11". This has proven unnecessary according to PlumB, so I didn't point it out.

I too only have an HDMI out... I've found out two things from this setup...

1) it only captures the first half of the EDID (you may need both parts... Block 0 and Block 1.. at least to get a complete "original" snapshot)

2) It fails to update correctly. I've tried many different monitor modes, and even when I can get it to the pick the TV, it crashes my computer. I purchased a Female DVI to HDMI Male converter online, and once it arrives, I'll test that with my desktop. I'm hoping this solution will work so no wire hacking will be necessary.

It is also important to note that EDID flashing should only be performed on cords less than 6 ft. (Preferably 1.5ft).. Anything longer can cause data failures! Gleened this tip from other forums doing EDID flashing on computer monitors

Nope... If you look at the TV, it has 4 EDIDs.. one for each HDMI, and one for VGA... You need to flash HDMI3... So you're only bets are making an adapter (and hoping that works better), or trying a different computer with DVI out and using the adapter I found (which I haven't confirmed works yet, but I suspect it will)... I should know in a few days.

#13 ·
I had a lot of problems with my laptop too. Even when it reported a successful flash there would be random bytes that were wrong.

Quote:

You don't actually have to update the extension block, only the first 128 bytes that you posted. Powerstrip only writes 128 bytes at a time so even if you had the whole 256 it would only write the first 128. The extension block should still be there after you flash the modified EDID.

Also be aware that entering the service menu will reset your picture settings in the user menu. You might want to write those down if it's not too late.

However, on the Order A License Page it clearly says:

Apparently the "update EDID" option is an undocumented, unsupported feature, so it's not included in the trial version. I've also read that now you need to tell them why you want that feature before they will give you the pin to activate it. You may want to contact them first and make sure they will give you the pin before you pay.

jford951,

I added it to the list along with the updated EDID, just follow the guide and you should be good. Let me know how it works or if you have any problems.

So far it looks like the different sizes within the same model series all have identical EDIDs, aside from the build date.

#19 ·
So I purchased a copy of the service manual so I could confirm everything we're doing. According to the service manual, when EDID is set to OFF, the EDID EEPROM is protected, when it is set to ON, it is unprotected. (As we already knew).

This is new:

ALL EDID - Download to ALL EDIDs

PC...

HDMI1.

HDMI2..

HDMI3... Download to particular EDID... so we should be flashing only under this one, or we're overriding all 4! (We should update the directions)

HDMI EDID Version - used to downgrade the HDMI to a lower version (d: 1.3)

No, the directions don't say to touch any of those options under the EDID menu. All you have to do is disable write protection by turning EDID on/off to on.

I'm just speculating but I think those options may be a different way of updating(possibly with a file saved to a usb flash drive?). Does your service manual give any additional info on updating the EDID?

I've checked the EDID on all my inputs and the only one that has been updated is HDMI 3.

Also note that this menu option appears to be unique to the 650/750 models. The 87s menu shows EDID write protection as DDC. If someone could post more details on the various service menu options I will update the OP.

There are no directions to go along with the menu just a table.. I can go into HDMI3, and when I click it, it says "Waiting... Success"..

Yeah, I just did some experimenting with this and it appears that selecting those options actually restores the stock EDID! This is good news incase you have trouble flashing the update and get stuck with a corrupted EDID, you can just revert back to the stock one.

The EDID must be stored on the firmware also. Makes me wonder if there is a way to update without using powerstrip.

I found some software on the internet called "Edid_Writer.zip".. It won't run on my Win7 64-bit machine,

Thank you for your work on this, gentlemen. I look forward to finished results on the 61/67" LED DLPs!

I didn't see a final thought on this on the other thread: is there not a way to disable the Mits adapter from looking for the EDID in the first place?

I think that is a requirement for HDCP, and a handshake cannot occur with out it... it also contains a lot more information than verdor/manufacturer..

Noob question...can you post a link on where to buy the 3DA-1 adapter or a place you recommend from buying it (google'd it but a i'm not sure which places are legit) and once you have the steps in your instructions where can i find on how to set up everything i.e. PS3, directv, etc.. to work in 3D.? Thanks and sorry for the dumb questions.
