Arrow Momitsu 880N

The 880N is supposed to be released in January and it apparently supports network connections via an ethernet cable. Can anyone discuss the usefullness of these abilities. If I have a computer in a different room and connect it to the Momitsu via a network cable or via a wireless network, what can I do with it? Show pictures, play music ok....what about video? how much data can flow here and how quickly? I'm assuming games would be too demanding to transfer.

Looks like it plays VOBs over the network.

Very nice...

What this means is that you can keep part of your DVD
collection on a fileserver somewhere in the house and
access it from different parts of the house if you have an
ehternet network.

An immediate task I can put it to is to serve the multi-disk
movies like Lord Of The Rings and some of my flippers
like Amadeus and most my concert disks.

The task is being done by the HTPC at the moment and
I would like to collapse it into one unit and reduce
the clutter.

(It it works as advertised it will probably give my HTPC a
good run for its money and move it a step closer to retirement)

Hey guys,

I emailed them a couple of weeks ago about a specific release date. They replied back saying there was no specific date except that they were expecting it to be late January. Hopefully it doesn't get pushed back from there.

I have only seen the KiSS players that can do something similar
but they seem to have its fair share of problems.

The Momitsu is relatively stable and the V880 at least has
reasonable good feed back on this forum.

Does anyone know of other network capable DVD players out there ?

and it is supposed to do MPEG4
If the whole thing works good, it's gonna be one of the best solutions to replace HTPC with no fuss.... one crapy PC with big hard drives far away (for the noise... ) one 880N and voila..... can't wait to read some reviews of it

Does anyone know if the V880N will still have the ability to output a analog signal thru the DVI like the current V880?

I also saw in another thread that it will accept video signals from other sources and output via DVI, but this was listed as "optional". I would be curious to hear further information on this as that would be an excellent feature.

I contacted tech support and they assured me the new V880s would operate exactly the same in regards to video output. So, Yes, DVI-A will still be an option on the newer V880s.

Good News!

They change from Jan to Feb and now to March 2004 ! I think they want to sell more V880 before selling the V880N !! I am not going to buy V880 until it drops to $150. By Feb, the D2 will be out.

These HDTV stuff are not new technology. they just transfer the old PC vedio to the DVD player. I have 1280x1024 (or higher) on my PC monitor few years ago.

With HDMI going to replace DVI soon, all these DVI players are short lived. My next projector, TV and receiver will have a HDMI connection.

How come they do not sell these player at USA ??? I am sure they can sell many of them here easily.

ewclam9,
Lots of us have used a HTPC for years as well. The V-880, D1 and others like it are for those of us who want an alternative to having to use a PC. Not necessarily better, just different and IMHO simpler.

FWIW.

Juno,

simpler : \Sim"pler\, n. One who collects simples, or medicinal plants; a herbalist; a simplist.

charlycui,
Yes there was another player introduced about 4 months ago that does do this.... and with some success. The downside was, despite the fact that it was a DVD player, playing DVDs is what it did not do well at all.
Go figure.

That's a good question. The network DVD player that was reviewed was the Amoi NDP9200. The operation seemed to be very similar to a Momistu. It required that you install a program on your PC, connect your player, the software would catalog your files, then the player could find them via the network. For this particular player there was no mention of VOB files. But you could contact Manowa tech assist at Manowa.com for specification information. I'm very interested as well in this feature.

I've used and returned the networked gateway dvd

It only recognized about 1/2 of the mpeg files on my server, and could only play about 1/4 of them

The prismiq, by contrast, recognized all the files and played tehm without problem

see www.prismiq.org forums for more discussion

very interesting product but it only has s-video and composite video output.
Not good enough for hi resolution playback

http://www.manowa.com.tw/dvdplayer880N.html

it seems that this player will support most of the video files including vob which is great!

Are they still in business?

I have been looking all over for a new dvd player and when I stumbled upon this Momitsu 880N, I though all my wishes had been answered.

However it seems like none of the urls to the manowa web site are working.

Is this right? Does anyone know what happened?

BTW- I bought the Samsung HD391 last Friday and promptly returned it on Sunday. I saw no difference on the DVI output when compared to a $70 dvd player using component out. Infact, the DVI output was worse, I had to make adjustments to my plasma to get get the image to fit correctly.

Can anyone tell me how the Momitsu players perform? Is the picture quality noticably better?

(my plasma is the Viewsonic 450HD)

Do you think all the problems with the current Momitsu V880 will be fixed in this version?

Well, It's march and there is no update at the manowa website- still says:

"Thank you for interested in Momitsu V880. V880 will available in March 2004 for end users. We will release the specific date and where to purchase soon."

I guess it's airware.
