Planar 42" HD Plasma

It’s weird that there is so little information and no reviews about this plasma on the Internet. I have also contacted the vendor but no information was given other than asking me to check with those online resellers listed on their web site. Shouldn’t they do a little bit better work to advertise it if they want to sell it in volumes?

I doubt they've sold many. The ED 42" showed up at Dell before any other retailer I was aware of. I bought one and knew more about it than one on the product managers after using it for 3 days....

It was horrid. But I really don't want that to be used to infer >>anything<< about the HD model.

No responses yet? I found a Planar 42 HD Plasma for just over $3000k which includes a 20% discount good until April 30. If you pick 3-5 days for shipping, its free and they have no interest financing plus only 120/month payment. I am really considering this and wondering if anyone knows anything more about Planar HD. Hopefully, before April 30, please?

I bought the Planar PDP-42HD from Dell with the 20% discount. It is an awesome set. I use it mostly with Voom, and the HD is stunning to me. I was leery of it in the beginning, but I don't regret buying it, and even less so at $3100.

We buy a lot of stuff from Dell, and last week I was talking to my Software and Peripherals guy about buying about $50,000 worth of 19" monitors. They had a special going that for every order of $25,000 you get a FREE 42" Planar ED plasma. We weren't ready to buy the monitors right yet, but that was enticing. It's not the plasma I'd like for my media room (50" panny), but to have 2 42" ED models to use for free would have been pretty cool.

I have one of these. It was replaced by Planar under warranty twice in the first 45 days. The current display, my third one, gets flaky occasionally.

When I am listening to music with my DTV receiver and the screen goes black, sometimes the plasma turns random pink lines on.

Otherwise, this display has a kick butt clarity.

Warning - I had one of these units for two years and it recently broke - screen became a mess of purple lines. Tried to find a dealer to repair this unit and none exist. No one fixes Planar plasmas - No one. Contacted Planar and they said that because they are such a small company they cannot afford to have authorized dealers and hence have no repair outlets. What a POS!

Correct - they won't take it back to even repair it....pretty much just out of luck. Buyer beware I guess, but I purchased through Dell so I thought I was safe - unfortunately no.

Right now, its sitting a Plasma repair shop (repairs Panny, Sharp, etc.) and they are trying to figure out a way to fix it. As of this moment, it has been there for 18 weeks (broke right before NFL season)....I've pretty much considered it a lost cause.

My Planar occasionally was vertical pink stripes, with lots of little horizontal stripes all across the screeen. It only tends to do it when I use the composite input.

It never does it when using component inputs. I always was able to get mine to go away by power cycling the plasma and changing the inputs. My plasma also gets pretty hot, so I make sure it is ventilated pretty well.

I'd post a picture of what it does, but I dont have one here at the office.

Hi everyone,
i purchased a PDP 42HD directly from Planar about 2 years ago and the component connections have been giving me problems starting about 6 months ago, getting progressively worse. There are pink lines and other horizontal artifacts that will go away if i wiggle the component connections "just right", but otherwise they are there permanently.

So i've called Planar support and they said that a) i can't send it to them for repair, and b) no 3rd parties are authorized to repair planars.

They have offered me an LCD replacement at their cost and free shipping back of my plasma, but i don't think that is very fair either. What if the new LCD then goes out in 1-2 years, how will i get it repaired?

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get Planar to repair my Plasma? I"m willing to pay for these repairs but according to Planar this isn't an option.

It seems ludicrous that a manufacturer can sell directly to consumers and then not provide them the means to get repair service.

I also had a pdp42hd Planar Plasma and I had the same issues regarding the horizontal lines that dissipated when you wiggle the cables. The reason for that is the connection jacks themselves. the metal rings that are on the exterior of the jack is conneted to the circuit board, and due to stress or cheap manufacturing, the L shaped joint breaks, making the connection very poor. That is why when you wiggle your plugs, the lines go away a little because you are pressing the broken parts together.

My customer service experience was horrible with planar and I would not reccomend them for anything, since it seems they no longer care to support their tech. I was told by two diffrent CSRs that they no longer make or distribute parts for their TVs (although it's only a couple of years old!)
