D1 Died 3 weeks after warranty expired.

No help from V Inc.

Great pq when it worked, and it did many things right (properly scale 4:3 and non-anamorphic widescreen movies on a 16:9 screen).

It did lock up once in while before it took a complete crapper.

On occasion, mine freezes, won't open or respond to any buttons and displays "No CD." I have to unplug/plug the electric cord and the DVI input and to get it to reboot and work.

Great picture, though.

wow!!

I purchased new loader and that didn't help. I could not return it either. purchasing from them has been a learning experience.

Alive and kicking!

larryep:
I have one of the first D1s and although I did send it back to them once, it still keeps going and going and going... I'm hoping it holds out until a viable HD DVD successor emerges.

Amazing picture for under $200!

I've had one for 1.5 years. I added a LiteOn loader after about 6 months, and have only had minor loading problems that are usually resolved by simply re-opening and closing the disc tray.

I've run the Bravo D1 through some of the torture test images on AviaPro, and I am amazed at how well it performs for a $200 player.

At CES, I noticed that The Perfect Vision magazine gave the Bravo D2 an award for video performance.

Too bad that for want of a decent $10 power supply, the Bravo is a hero on performance but a goat on reliability.

D1 still going strong. Replaced original loader with Lite-On 167T because of freeze ups.

ALMOST 60% have quit working, WOW! Wonder if this percentage is close to their complete distribution.

My D1 worked OK for 21 months (stunning picture, of course), although the loader performance slowed down and became more finicky over time. A power supply capacitor failed a few weeks ago, so I sent the board to V Inc. for repair. I had the fixed board back in less than two weeks ($40). The V Inc. service department was actually pretty responsive for me via email. The power supply is back in and the D1 is up and running again.

I replaced the loader today with a IDE internal DVD-ROM reader I got for free on rebate from CompUSA last year and it is like a totally different machine now... very fast loading and function response. So far, it has loaded and played everything I've thrown at it without any problems at all. I'm hopeful this will extend the life of my unit several more years. I really enjoy the awesome DVI picture quality and have not come across anything better (I've tried the Zenith 318 and the Denon 1910).

It's too bad V Inc. didn't build them better to start with. They were really on to something as far as PQ goes.

Tip: don't buy a replacement loader from V Inc. They are junk.

what brand and model number was that dvd rom?

mine is just sitting in closet. not sure what i want to do. I have been putting it off to get fixed. been waiting for the network players to come out.
i do miss that picture quality. It is ashame they didn't get it right the first time. I would of payed 300. they could of put a stellar rom and long lasting power supply in it.

I have a Memorex DVD-16X6S installed in the Bravo. It's probably a rebadged Lite-On. There's a great thread with pictures and lots of info about how to do this here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...hreadid=284831

I just unplugged and removed the stock loader and then simply plugged in the DVD-ROM and it is working really great so far. I didn't update the firmware as suggested in the thread. To get the power supply board fixed, email tech support at V Inc. and tell them you'd like to send just the board in for repair. It's way cheaper to do it that way... if you send the whole unit, the cost is $80. Removing and installing the power supply board is very easy.

My first D1 died after a year. I sent it in under the warranty and got it replaced with a brand new one - which died in 6 months.

When this second one died, I called and emailed Vinc several times with a request for an RMA. Despite several attempts to contact them, they have not gotten back to me, which, to me, is totally unacceptable. I was going to stick with the Bravo, perhaps even upgrade to the D2. Now (and I hope Vinc is reading this) F' Them. I'm buying the Denon 5910 (and selling my Denon 2900, and throwing my D1 off my roof).

Denon should thank Vinc for my business.

Mine died a month or two after the warranty expired . . . it had a very good picture while it lasted. Just for fun I took it to a local video shop to see what they could do, but too much would have to be replaced, costing more than a new player, so I gave up. I'm on the hunt for a upscaling DVD player w/DVI out. . .

Best,

JW

I dont know what people expect from a feature laden machine that was dirt cheap. At the time when they 1st came out, were there any cheaper machines with the same features? YOu had to know that there was going to be gotchas with that combination. No different than APEX, or Cyberhome, or any of the other 10-15 "crapsonic" brands loaded with high end features for bargain basement prices...

I don't think merely asking a player to not lock up and be able to read discs to be expecting "too much", bargain price for the features or not.

I have been able to fix mine by getting V Inc. to repair the power supply, then I replaced their crappy stock loader with a standard computer IDE internal DVD-ROM reader. Now it works better than when it was new.

But, I wouldn't buy another new product from them. They should have made them a little sturdier and charged an extra $50 or something.

Mine died with a power supply issue (the "Hello" of death) after 15 months. I never replaced the loader and had issues with inconsistancy but the picture was amazing.

HERE's the REAL question....what are people replacing the dead D1 coaster with?

I'm thinking about the Oppo that people are talking about but am anxious about jumping into the ground level on a new product again although the results sound good, new firmware is being generated, and the price is right. The D2 is out in my mind as is the Sammy 841...Denon 1910, Sony 975 are also in play but Oppo wins on price point (and picture if the reports are accurate).

My D1 died after about 15 months...the "grind of death". This was the 2nd unit...1st replaced under warranty because the unit would not stay open, I had to hold the tray while loading or removing a DVD. Replaced it with a Denon 3910.

My first D1 died after 11 months of so-so performance. I have got replacement, one from the late development. I actually had option D1 or D2 for extra $. Not a glitch since. Average use 2-3 DVDs a week. Custom resolution with plasma plus region free, Macrovision free (thanks to this forum) amazing PQ. Probably wouldn't buy another Vinc player so. Look forward to replace it with Mac mini

I checked into replacing my D1 and wound up buying and testing a Zenith 318 and the Denon 1910. They were not superior in PQ to the Bravo, and had their problems (stretched 4:3 material, macroblocking, etc.) The Panny S97 is basically unavailable, and the Sony 975 is too new to judge yet. The Samsung units are crap, too. The Oppo might work out after firmware is released that fixes all of the bugs it has, but I can't see buying one now and hoping the flaws are addressed later. And the Momitsu? Another unit with a spotty reliability record. The high end Denon units are out of my price range (I have small children, so I can't risk having them fool around with a $1000 player).

For $40 (the fee to repair the power supply), I went ahead and fixed my D1. The DVD-ROM reader I installed was free from a CompUSA rebate deal. Until something reasonably priced comes along that is definitely better, I'll keep the Bravo running.

My D1 is working fine. It has the best picture of the players I have tried. I have viewed over 100 movies on it.

I'd like to try one. (D2)

If anyone wants to sell their dead D2, I'd be interested in buying and repairing it. (PM me)
